INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 2, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lost 8-0 to the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field Saturday night. Clay Holmes pitched seven shutout innings, limiting the RailRiders to six hits over seven shutout innings, striking out eight.

Indianapolis took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Justus Sheffield. Kevin Newman doubled and Max Moroff walked. With two down, Jacob Stallings plated both with a broken bat single. After an Eric Wood single, Kevin Kramer’s sixth home run of the year, 371 feet to right-center, pushed the Indians lead to 5-0. Sheffield (0-2) settled in from the second through the fifth, walking one and retiring 11 straight to close his outing before walking the final batter he faced.

In the sixth, Sheffield walked the leadoff batter and was lifted. Reliever Brady Lail allowed three consecutive singles, including a RBI knock by Kramer to extend the edge to 6-0. Indianapolis added one more run on a double play for a 7-0 lead. The Indians added a run on a sac fly in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Clay Holmes (3-3) earned the victory and was backed up by scoreless innings from Josh Smoker and Johnny Hellweg.

n e w s & n o t e sSCORELESS: The RailRiders were blanked for the seventh time this season in Friday’s loss. Only Pawtucket has been shutout more this season, eight times, heading into play on Sunday. Lehigh Valley and Columbus has also been held scoreless seven times this season. One club, Toledo, has yet to be shutout in 2018.

KEEPING PACE: Brandon Drury’s on-base streak was extended to 25 games; every game he has played in Triple-A this season between his rehab stint and after he was optioned on May 14. Drury’s streak is tied for the third longest in RailRiders history, dating back to the start of the 2013 season. He has matched Rob Refsnyder (2015) and Donovan Solano (2017) for third-most. Cole Figueroa reached in 26 straight during the 2015 season. Jake Cave holds the RailRiders mark at 31 in-a-row last season.

MORE MOVEMENT: Outfielder Shane Robinson was placed on the 7-Day Disabled List and first baseman/ outfielder Ryan McBroom was transferred to Trenton. To fill part of the void, outfielders Cesar Diaz was transferred from Extended Spring Training and Mark Payton was activated from the 7-Day Disabled List. Diaz played twice for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in April, while Payton had not played a game at any level this season after off-season knee surgery. On Saturday, the New York Yankees added infielder Bruce Caldwell to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre roster. Caldwell was batting .257 over 42 games for the Trenton Thunder and this marks his second stint with the RailRiders this season.

OLI’S OUT: Prior to Friday’s game, reliever Oliver Perez was released from his contract by the New York Yankees. Perez was 1-0 with a 2.57 earned run average over 16 games, but had allowed nine of 14 inherited runners to score. Perez signed a Major League contract with Cleveland on Saturday.

RECOVERY MODE: Chance Adams worked five and two-thirds on Friday before Cale Coshow and Cody Carroll completed the shutout bid. It was the fourth shutout this season by the RailRiders and second on this trip.

RETURN GAME: After today’s finale in Indianapolis, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre returns home for a ten-game, nine-day homestand with three against Durham, three versus Louisville and four games over three days against Rochester.
