The Bulls are coming off a series loss against Louisville that saw Durham drop the rubber match last night 7-4 in 11 innings. Since beginning the month of August with a three-game sweep of Charlotte, the South Division leading Bulls have gone 2-4 while losing back-to-back series. The RailRiders, meanwhile, come to town for the first and only time this season with the best record in the league at 74-41. Winners of six straight, Scranton/WB has begun to pull away in the North Division with a 7.5 game lead over Lehigh Valley. LAST GAME The Durham Bulls had their game and series against the Louisville Bats slip away late Wednesday night, as the Bulls couldn’t hold on to a one-run lead in the ninth before eventually losing 7-4 in 11 innings from the DBAP. The Bulls entered the ninth holding on to a 4-3 lead thanks to seven solid innings of work by starting pitcher Yonny Chirinos to go along with four runs on 10 hits by the Durham lineup. Reliever Chaz Roe wasn’t able to hold on to the one-run advantage in the ninth however, as the Bats tied the score at 4-4 and sent the game to extras. The contest remained deadlocked until the 11th, when Louisville plated three runs on three hits and a walk to hand the Bulls a 7-4 loss. EXTRA INNINGS = EXTRA TROUBLE The Bulls struggles in extra innings continued last night, with the club falling to Louisville 7-4 in 11 innings. The Bulls are now 4-8 in games lasting longer than nine innings this year, which includes four straight losses and two defeats at the hands of Louisville. QUALITY START, BUT NO WIN FOR CHIRINOS RHP Yonny Chirinos recorded his team-leading 13th quality start of the season last night, as the Venezuela native held the Bats to three runs, one earned, on seven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts over seven innings pitched. The outing was the fifth straight quality start for Chirinos and the eighth in his past nine starts. While the 23-year-old was denied his 12th win for a third straight outing the seven innings of one-run ball did lower his ERA to 2.80, the fifth lowest mark in the league. Chirinos also rates among the IL’s best in WHIP (0.99, 1st), Wins (11, 2nd), BAA (.229, 6th), and Innings Pitched (119, 7th). BULLS ALL-TIME RECORD Overall 6,384-6,098 International League 1,446-1,274 WONG BREAKS INTO TOP 10 Kean Wong continued his second half surge at the plate last night with a 3-6 game including two runs scored and two stolen bases. The contest was his 18th multi-hit game of the year and his fifth three-hit game of the season, with seven of the multi- hit contests and three of the three-hit performances coming since the All-Star break. The big night was enough to boost Wong up to 10th in the IL batting race with a .285 average to go along with a .723 OPS, 17 doubles, four home runs, 37 RBI and 13 stolen bases. STARTING PITCHER NO. 22 When RHP Mike Broadway makes his Bulls debut tonight, he’ll become the 22nd different pitcher to make a start for Durham in 2017, easily surpassing last season’s total of 13 starters. Broadway will be the seventh pitcher to make one start with the team, with only four pitchers accumulating double digit starts (Yarbroughm, Chirinos, Honeywell, Faria). Despite the abundance of hurlers to take the mound, the Bulls still rank 3rd in the IL with a 3.36 ERA while covering a league-high 1,045.2 IP. MAGIC NUMBER COUNTDOWN: 12 The Bulls were able to shave their Magic Number for clinching the South Division despite a loss last night, as Gwinnett’s 2-1 loss to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre dropped the all-important numeral down to a league-low 12. The next lowest Magic Number belongs to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with the owners of the best record in the IL continuing to quickly shave their Magic Number down to 18 with a sixth staright win. Finally in the West Division both first place Indianapolis and second place Columbus lost last night, leaving the Indians’ Magic Number at 24. CHASING HISTORY The Bulls’ 71-45 record through 116 games has them in line to finish with one of the best records in franchise history. This years’ Durham squad is on pace to finish right with 87 wins, which would tie them for third all time with the 2013 team, just two wins back of the 1969 crew. The 2010 Bulls ended the year 88-55 (.615) for the best Triple-A record in team history, wihle the 1962 squad went 89-51 (.636) while playing in the Class B Carolina League for the best overall record in Durham history. 2017 BULLS VS.
