Newsbrief April 22, 2010 The St. Claire Regional data center project will expand the medical center’s information technology infrastructure. The medical center depends on information technology 24/7 and the innovative data center expansion is designed to accommodate increasing use of electronic information services. Transferring the infrastructure equipment to the 1200 sq/ft facility will relieve space and facility infrastructure limitations that currently limit future system development. “The data center will provide the redundancy and reliability required to maximize clinical application performance for the implementation of the SCR electronic medical record systems,” says John Gibson, the SCR Network Analyst assisting in the project coordination of the new data center. The SCR data center is designed with fail-safe features to reduce computer system downtime with backups for power, cooling and network connectivity. Plus, the facility can operate uninterrupted on emergency generator power in the case of an utility electrical outage. The data center will also utilize state-of-the-art modular technology that will allow network bandwidth and computer processing power to be added as needed. St. Claire Regional recently participated in the first “Bowlin’ for the Colon” bowl-a-thon on Friday, March 26th. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness about early screening for colon cancer in Rowan and surrounding counties. The night was packed full of fun activities – not only bowling, but local musicians provided entertainment and good food was plentiful along with educational presentations.

A big hit was the distinctive T-shirts which were sold to commemorate the event. We encourage the shirts to be worn often to increase awareness of this important screening. Shirts are still available and can be purchased from Dr. Ann Colbert for $10.

Effective, May 7, 2010 SCR will no longer be providing general radiography services (X-ray) at the Outpatient Center located at 1028 East Main Street in Morehead, Kentucky. However, patients can still receive mammography and DEXA (Bone Density) services at the Outpatient Center location. Please ensure your patients know that they will need to come to our main hospital for all general radiography services (X-ray) beginning May 7, 2010.

We truly appreciate your understanding of the transition of X-ray services back to the main facility. This transition will benefit the overall organization as it allows us to make more efficient usage of our equipment and resources. We will work to make this change as accommodating to patients as possible, if you have any questions please contact us at 606-783-6761.

Carolyn Hayden, LPN from 3 central retired

April 2nd, 2010. Carolyn has been a dedicated

and loyal employee for 20 years at SCR and

has worked in many departments through

the years. Carolyn is an excellent nurse with

a wonderful bedside manner to patients and

families. Carolyn will be deeply missed by

her St. Claire Regional family, patients and

families.

Carolyn Hayden, 20 year SCR staff member with her family at her retirement party

Kim Hamilton, a dietary staff member, was working the register when an adolescent was paying for his purchase. He only had a debit card. Kim told him that she had no way to use it and instead took her badge and paid for his food.

Kim was spotted helping an elderly gentleman that was confused about how to go through the buffet line. She not only asked if she could help

him, but she asked him what he would like to eat and filled his plate of food.

Thank you Kim for providing such a good example of great SCR customer service.

Upcoming EvEnts

One in 12 people worldwide are living with either chronic Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C. In the United States, approximately 1.2 million people have chronic Hepatitis B and 3.2 million have chronic Hepatitis C. Each year an estimated 25,000 persons become infected with Hepatitis A, 43,000 with Hepatitis B, 17,000 with Hepatitis C. Many do not even know they are infected.

Hepatitis A Virus is usually spread when a person ingests fecal matter-even in microscopic amounts-from contact with objects, food or drinks contaminated by the feces or stool of an infected person.

Hepatitis B Virus is spread through contact with infectious blood, semen, and other body fluids, from having sex with an infected person, sharing contaminated needles to inject drugs, or from an infected mother to her newborn.

Hepatitis C Virus is spread through direct contact with infected blood. Today, most people become infected with the Hepatitis C virus by sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs.
