The Eagle’s Nest Scoutmaster Notes One of the primary goals of Scout leaders is to teach young men how to become leaders. Based on the number of Eagle Scout ceremo- nies we have had lately, I would say that the young men of Troop 1 are excelling in that area. I would also like to thank the Scout fami- lies who attended Scout Sunday. It was a great event and gives our troop sponsor, the Church of the Advent, a glimpse of what our Scouts are doing in the Spartanburg community. Special thanks also to all those who helped set up for the breakfast. I am looking forward to our upcoming trips to the Congaree National Park and the Virginia Creeper Trail. We welcome any adult who would like to join us on these trips. And FYI, the hiking trip to the Congaree National Park is about as flat of a hike as you can get! I trust our Scouts who attended Merit Badge College have made great progress and that we will see a lot of rank advancement at our next Court of Honor. This group of first years has done an excellent job of attending meeting, go- ing on trips, and advancing. I would be amazed in a couple of years if all of them are not Eagle Scouts. Needless to say, Ted Gage and Jacky Middlebrooks have played a very critical role in developing these young Scouts. Thanks for your support of Troop 1! FATHER-SON HONORS

Congratulations to Jacky and Drew Middlebrooks,

respective recipients of the George Dean

Johnson Adult Leader-ship Award and the

George Withers Award, which recognizes a Scout

who personifies the ideals of Scouting.

DUES ARE DUE! The time has come to renew your membership in Boy Scouts and Troop 1. Dues are the same as last year, $100 for Scouts and $10 for adults. New Scouts entering our troop will continue to pay an additional $25 to cover the costs of a neckerchief, slide, patches, and Scout Handbook. Please consider registering at least one adult per household. Registered adults are included on BSA’s liability insurance and therefore are able to officially help transport and oversee Scouts on campouts and other sanc-tioned events. E-mail Coby for an Adult Application form. Scout dues include a sub-scription to Boys’ Life. If you are not receiving your monthly magazine, please let Coby know as soon as possible. As in the past, we require that a Scout’s dues be paid before we recharter. We must receive your dues by February 20 in order for you to be renewed. If you are not renewed, you will be dropped from our roster at the Council Of-fice and your records deleted from their computer. Please make your check payable to “BSA Troop 1” and give it to Coby at a Scout meeting before February 20.

What an awesome way to start off the winter outdoor sea-son by heading off to the mountains for some fun on the ice and snow. It was great to watch all of you take very little time to jump right into action. I was impressed with every-one's progress! For some of you, this was either your first or second time on skiis, and it was exciting to see how well you did. At the beginning of the day, some of you felt a little wobbly and were digging those skis into that snowplow posi-tion. However, by the end of the trip, I think everyone was confidently attacking the slopes! I still don't believe some of you that say the snow sports video games are harder, but we will argue later. Remember that the February 27 - March 1 Congaree hike is right around the corner, so we finally will have a chance to get that campfire lit. As we have said before, try to start breaking in those boots, if you have not done so already. Also, if you do not yet have a pair, you might want to start working on this or at least call around for your boot sizes right away. This trip should be lots of fun. Hopefully, we will get to see some of the swamp's wildlife in action after win-ter inactivity.

March 13-15 we head out again for a good time on the Virginia Creeper Trail. I know many of you have made solid progress on badges at this winter’s Merit Badge College. I hope you’ve been taking advantage of the recent spring-like weather to jump on your bike and get some exercise after sitting still for most of the day. Any pedaling would be a good idea to help get ready for some serious cycling.

Work hard and let's get those important merit badges com-pleted! We've got lots of fun to look forward to on upcoming outdoor trips. Let's get that campfire lit! Jay

NECESSARY MEDICAL FORMS BSA has changed the medical forms Troop 1 uses. Instead of the old Class 1, 2 or 3 forms, there is now one form with three parts – A, B and C. The same form is used for both Scouts and adults. E-mail Coby or Ted for the new form or download it from http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/34605. Please fill out parts A and C, print it out, then return it to Coby. The next time you visit the doctor, have them fill out part B. We have through the rest of 2009 to phase these forms into our troop records.

Mark your calendars for June 14 - 20 for our return to Camp Ho Non Wah. For those of you who have been before, you know it's a great camp with plenty to do, in and out of class. Our younger Scouts will be able to select their merit badges—including up to two Eagle badges. Early Bird Registration is through May 15. We do need dads to sign up for a couple of nights through the camp including bus drivers! For more information on Scout camp, contact Kyle Boyles.
