Kentucky Scottish Rite MasonsHelping Today’s Children to CommunicateScottish Rite Freemasonry involvement

in assisting children to communicate; In the1950’s the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry inthe Southern Jurisdiction of the UnitedStates initiated the Scottish RiteAphasiaand Dyslexia Program. The resultsobtained from this Program have led to theestablishment of the Scottish RiteChildhood Language Development Centersin the Southern Jurisdiction of Scottish RiteFreemasonry. In the 170 plus Centers in theSouthern Jurisdiction children are providedwith treatment for language disorders. Tohear—to speak---to understand; these arethe basic steps of Language development inthe young child’s mind. Yet, these are nor-mal, healthy pre-school age children whoare shut off from communication. Thesechildren have language problems that arisefrom various reasons, problems that affectthe rich and the poor alike. It is estimatedthat 10% of children in the United Stateshave speech and other learning disabilities.

Scottish Rite Masons in Kentuckystepped up to the plate in 1985 andanswered the call to help, aid and assistchildren with Language Development.

Each of the Kentucky Scottish Rite Valleysformed a Foundation to fund a ChildhoodLanguage Center in their respective area. The Center in Louisville has servedChildren since opening in 1985; theProgram is supervised by the SpeechPathologist located at Cardinal Hill-EasterSeals of Louisville. The ChildhoodLanguage Development Centers in theValley of Covington opened in the early1990’s and is under the supervision of theSpeech Pathologist located at Cardinal Hillof Northern Kentucky, the Center inMadisonville is the only Center inKentucky that is located in the Scottish RiteTemple, the children are under the supervi-sion of the Speech Pathologist of Mathis &Wempe TherapyAssociates, theWestKentucky Center opened in the early 1990’s.The Center in Lexington opened in theearly 1990’s, the children are under thesupervision of the Speech Pathologist locat-ed with Horn, Richardson andAssociates.

It is our MISSION in Kentucky ScottishRite Freemasonry to provide treatmentCenters for our young pre-school age chil-dren between the ages of 2 to 5 years who

have difficulty speaking and/or under-standing the spoken word. These servicesare available to all children, regardless ofrace, creed or national origin. Each mem-ber of the Scottish Rite is a vital part of thisvery important undertaking. “YES” yourValley Foundation needs the support ofeach member [new and old] to assist thoseChildren that are in need of our help ineliminating their Language problems. “Iknowwe can count on you because you area Scottish Rite Freemason.”Remember the words ofAlbert Pike, 33°

After joining the fraternity, a Master Mason soon discovers awealth of additional opportunities to learn about and to par-ticipate in Freemasonry. While there is no Masonic degreemore important than that of Master Mason, there is a longtradition-almost as old as Freemasonry-of "high degrees"that expand upon and elaborate the teachings and lessons ofthe first three degrees. Enthusiastic Masons eager to learnand to participate more are prime candidates for Masonrybeyond the Third Degree.Scottish Rite ConferralThe conferral of degrees in the Scottish Rite is quite different fromthe first Three Degrees you received in your local Blue Lodge.

Conferral is traditionally during a 1, 2 or 4 day Reunion (ourterm for a new class of initiates) usually in the Spring and FallOne person is chosen to represent everyone in the receiving ofthe degrees.Degrees are conferred as theatrical events before candidates asan audience rather than as a participatory ceremony. These theatrical presentations may involve stages with elabo-rate scenery and costumes.

The Scottish Rite is a collection of degrees that build upon thelegends of the Blue Lodge.

The rite offers a total of 30 degrees beyond 3° Master Mason. Each degree is based on an idea of progressive ethical aware-ness and self-knowledge through self-reflection and dramaticallegories.

The Scottish Rite degrees give insight to the expansion ofMasonic legends.

The Lodge of Perfection, 4°-14°, is concerned with eventsfollowing the murder of HiramAbiff. The 15° and 16° explain the return of Zerubbabel from Babylonto rebuild the temple at Jerusalem. The 17° and 18° center around re-instituting the word underthe Law of Love as taught by Jesus and other religiousreformers. The 19"-30° culminate with the Degree of Knight Kadosh, aspiritual knighthood similar to the Knights Templar, anddevelop the Scottish Rite's succession from crusading knights. The 31 ° teaches us that it is human to err. That it is far noblerto sin & repent than to have never fallen from grace in one'slife. In the 32°, Master of the Royal Secret, the candidate is taughtequilibrium as a key to self-fulfillment.

The Scottish Rite respects all of mankind's religions and teachesextraordinary ways in which individuals thoughts and beliefs canbe expressed, either through ritual work or open seminars andmeetings.Feast of Tishri is usually a dinner meeting or family night witha Hebrew Rabbi as guest speaker. It celebrates the Jewish"ingathering" or Thanksgiving.Maundy Thursday where a ceremony is conducted "extin-guishing and relighting the lights" and remembering ourdeceased brethren. Learn the true Fatherhood of God, and howthe law of love rules on Earth.

TheOtherHalf of thisOneDayClass–Becoming a Shriner

People often think of Shriners as themenwith the funny hatswhoparticipate in parades and circuses. That’s true, but there ismuchmore.

When you become a Shriner, you become part of a brotherhood ofmen committed to family, engaged in ongoing personal growth, andproviding care for children and families in need. While our back-grounds and interestsmay be diverse, what binds us together areshared values and a desire to have fun, do good and build bonds thatlast a lifetime.

Shriners are a fraternity based on fun, fellowship and theMasonicprinciples of brotherly love, truth and relief. Throughout history boththe Freemasons and Shriners have had a reputation for secrecy, butourmission is straightforward. Shriners are committed to:

Being the premier fraternal organization formen of goodcharacter.Providing attractive, quality programs and services for itsmem-bers, their families and their friends in a spirit of fun, fellowshipand social camaraderie.Fostering self-improvement through leadership, education, theperpetuation ofmoral values and community involvement.

PhilanthropyShriners are passionate about servingmankind through Shriners

Hospitals for Children. Shriners also support local community chari-ties like our ownKosair Charities that help children across Kentuckyand in Southern Indiana.

ShrinersHospitals for Children is an international health care sys-temdedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pedi-atric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching pro-grams. The hospitals focus on four specialized areas of care:Orthopedic, Burns, Spinal Cord Injury andCleft Lip andCleft Palate. One of these hospitals in located nearby in Lexington.

Every Kosair Shriner is a part of Kosair Charities. This specialphilanthropic organization began in the 1920’s and is dedicated tohelping children through support given to ShrinersHospitals forChildren, Kosair Children’sHospital, local children’s convalescenthomes, research centers andmany other agencies dedicated to help-ing children. Kosair Charities believes the quality of a child’s tomor-rowdepends to a large extent on the child’s health, medical treat-ment, and thewellness support the child receives today. KosairCharities has awardedmore than $216million in grants to agenciesthat support itsmission.Fun

There aremany social events and activities at Kosair Temple—dinners, dances, parties, tours, conventions, parades, picnics and, yes,the annual Kosair Shrine Circus. Not only is the circus a grand eventfor the family and general public, but also, ticket sales enable theShrine to take to the circus, free of charge, thousands of children eachyear that could not otherwise afford to go.

Kosair also operates a restaurant and club that is open onweek-days for lunch. Dinners are held on Friday nights and the club pro-vides catering services for events.
