Scottie Perspectives: As the year progresses, the Lamar calendar is packed with lots of fabulous events to attend, and fun clubs to be a part of. We want you to hear Lamar students’ perspectives on the various happenings around campus. Be on the lookout for articles included in the newsletter with student bylines. You’ll recognize these students as our Scottie Ambassadors. We’re excited for you to read their ideas and observations. Any other students not part of Student Council are interested in submitting their own articles to the library, can email Mrs. Hames with their thoughts at: [email protected]. Take a look at the attached guidelines on how to put together your article.

Picture Retakes: Your picture re-take day is coming up on Friday, November 20! This is your chance to take a great picture that you can share with your mom and dad, grandparents and all your friends and family.

Be sure to have your order form and payment envelope with you on picture re-take day. Payments must be received the day you take your pictures. The re-takes are only for those students who did NOT take pictures, or are returning their entire first picture packet for a new picture.

Pictures will be taken during your lunch block so listen for the announcements. Picture re-take forms can be picked up in the front office.

Scottie Pride Shines at CAC: By: Alysa Bijl-Spiro, 6th Grade

On November 9th in the cafeteria, Scottie parents discussed the history and future of Lamar Middle School. Associate Superintendent Terrence Eaton attended the meeting with AISD School Board Member Julie Cowan. Along with Principal Llewellyn, they addressed many questions and concerns from parents and students. Most of the discussion focused on the over-enrollment at Lamar and possible solutions.

Next year, Lamar may have to add another dance portable AND re-purpose a room to become an art room. The school may also add fun, new electives such as computer coding, so keep a look out!

Thank you to everyone who participated. Feel free to come to the next CAC meeting on January 13th if you have any questions or opinions to share about this magnificent school!

Blast to the Past: By: Terrel Hall, 7th Grade

On Tuesday November 3rd, Lamar Middle School’s theater department took a group of students to the Texas Renaissance Festival in Plantersville, TX. Several of our students competed at the festival—schools are limited to a small number of competitors—performing works from Shakespeare and other Renaissance era pieces. The competition categories were: one act play, group scenes, duet scenes, and monologues. Sadly none of our talented kids placed this year but that doesn’t stop the Lamar pride. GO SCOTTIES. The students got to walk around the festival and learn about the ancient art of falconry, the history of arms and armor, and even the dances of this amazing time period.

To cap off the Renaissance experience, the theater department had their own Renn-Fest on Thursday November 5th at Lamar. The intermediate theatre students got to present their monologues, duets, and small group scenes from some of Shakespeare's greatest works in the cafeteria at Lamar Middle School. So what’s next for the Lamar theatre department? Take a look at the attached flyer for the production class’ upcoming performance of The Crucible. They will be taking this piece to the AISD One-Act Play competition next week. Break a leg!

Showstoppers: On Friday, November 6th, thirty of Lamar’s advanced dance students—along with Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Roe, and seven parent chaperones—left for Grapevine, Texas, to attend the Showstopper Dance Convention at the Great Wolf Lodge. Upon arrival, the students enjoyed some free time in the hotel’s indoor water park. The dancers had an early start (7:20 a.m.) on Saturday with their choice of either a contemporary or tap dance class. The students then participated in two more classes in various styles (i.e. Jazz Funk, Broadway jazz, Hip Hop, Kick-line, Pom Pom, Bellydance Fusion and Contemporary Ballet) before they had lunch.

There was a break in the schedule to allow time for another trip to the indoor water park. The dancers unanimously agreed that the enormous red and yellow funnel shaped water slide was the best ride in the park! The afternoon dance classes offered were every bit as varied as the morning agenda. The classes were taught by professional dancers and choreographers. Some of the instructor credentials include performances and choreography on TV (i.e. Glee, SYTYCD, MTV, America’s Got Talent), film (i.e. Teen Beach Movie) and Broadway (i.e. Seussical, Fosse, Chicago). Dusty Button, a Principal with the Boston Ballet taught the contemporary ballet class. The hotel ballrooms were packed with other groups from around the region who were participating in the convention. Despite the crowds, Lamar had several students recognized by instructors and pulled out for demonstrations. Saturday night concluded with dinner at the Rain Forest Café, and Sunday morning began with another early start dance class. After a second morning of classes, a tired but still positive group of dancers and adults ate lunch and began the drive back to Austin. Dancers and adults agree that it was an inspiring and fun weekend. Many students are already looking forward to another opportunity to dance all weekend when the department returns to the Dallas area to attend the Radix dance convention in March.

FAA Audition Workshop:

The application deadline and audition times are fast approaching for prospective students hoping to major in the fine arts at Lamar. There will be an informational session on Saturday December 5th in the Lamar cafeteria to provide parents and students with details regarding the application and audition process. There are two different opportunities to attend this workshop, once at 9:00am or at 10:30am. After a general message is delivered from the principal, parents and students will break out into smaller sessions where they will get to hear from the strand sponsor of the program they are interested in. The AISD Middle School Choice Fair will also be taking place at Fulmore from 9-12 on Saturday December 5th. We are offering two workshops to allow parents to split their time between the events; or, if you are still trying to decide what major you’d like to audition for, you can attend both sessions and two different breakout workshops at Lamar to help you make that decision. The application and audition rubrics for all strands are available on the Lamar website (bottom of the home page). Please email our fine arts coordinator Ingrid McDonald with any questions: [email protected].

All-City Choir: Ava Grace Light-Whipple; 7th grade

All-City Honor Choir is an ensemble that consists of select choir students from elementary, middle, and high school. This year, the district only allowed a certain number of students per school, making it necessary to hold an audition, which was a new development from last year.

The audition process for All-City was difficult because only 12 people from Lamar were allowed to attend, compared to the 36 who attended the previous year. We learned the four songs we would be singing for the All-City concert, and Ms. Starkey chose two songs for us to sing at the audition. Even though it was hard, it was a very good decision by Ms. Starkey because all the Lamar students attending All-City knew their music in advance.

This was my second time in All-City choir and it was by far a more professional turnout this year. A lot of other schools required their students to audition using the same process as Lamar, rather than taking anybody who wanted to go. On the day of our performance we were provided with pizza which was greatly appreciated, and time to practice our music with the conductors.

I believe that the schools who had their students audition were more prepared than the ones who didn't. If all the schools had their students audition we could have spent less time learning our music, and more time polishing the concert pieces. All in all it was a great show and I can't wait for next year!

My Life as a Lamar Football Player: By: Jacob Verastegui 7th grade

At the beginning of the Football season most of us were confused, since it was our first year and we didn’t understand a lot of the words the coaches used. Some of us couldn’t even tell the difference between defense and offense. Our first two weeks were challenging. Not everyone was used to running, or doing exercises such as bear crawls (crawling on the ground on all fours). In some ways it felt like being in kindergarten again, and learning new things. We didn’t know just how much more difficult it could get until we put on our pads—making push-ups even harder than before. What also didn’t know that the exercises would actually get much easier over time. A week after we first put those pads we could barely tell they were there. For most of us, our game against Hudson Bend was our first game ever, and we weren’t sure what to expect from it. We ended up losing that game, and I think it may have been because many of us were still confused. Eventually we started to understand. The team members that had played football before helped us out by giving us tips and showing us how to line up on the field. It was really helpful, we started really working together as a team, and everybody found a position that they were good at. Each week Coach Canfield and Coach Myers would introduce us to something new, even if it was as simple as giving a thumbs up to the referee to make sure we were lined up properly. To be completely honest, I remember hearing people say it was going to be a bad season after the Hudson Bend loss. I don’t think many of us thought we were to win to a lot of games. However, overall we had a great season we made it past most of the other teams in the district. We only lost three games, and went all the way to the finals. If it wasn’t for everybody on the team helping each other out, and us having great coaches, I don’t think we would have become the zone runner-up.

Band TMEA Auditions:

On Saturday November 7th, the Lamar Band was represented at the TMEA District Band auditions. It was a historic day for the band program. We sent 64 students to audition, and 32 of them receivd a District patch. Highlights from the TMEA district band auditions include: Richard Giro took 1st in the Bari sax room and 2nd in the Alto Sax room, Gavin Owens took 1st in the Tenor sax room, Jackson Bennett took 2nd in the Tenor Sax room. Robert Hall took 1st in the percussion room! These students and more (a total of 13) will move on to round two which will occur Saturday 11/14 at Covington Middle School. Lamar band represented at an extremely high level, and we are so proud. Best of luck at the next round of auditions!

Lamar Student published in National Geographic for Kids: Congratulations to 7th grader Sophia Wallace on being a published photographer in National Geographic for Kids! You heard right, one of our very own Lamar students can now add National Geographic to her photography resume.

National Geographic for Kids has a section in their magazine (as well as space on their website) known as “My Shot.” According to their webpage, “NG Kids My Shot is a moderated photo community where kids can upload their favorite photos, get photo tips, rate photos, and comment on other members' pictures. It's a place to share a love of photography and inspire other kids to care about the planet.” Sophia began uploading her photos to NG Kids about 4 years ago. She first learned a bit about photography from both her parents who she says have a good eye for taking quality photos. She relayed that she used to play around with the settings on her camera just to see how they worked, but learned a lot of the technical aspects of photography when she enrolled in the photography course offered here at Lamar.

When asked what inspires her photographs, Sophia says that she basically will snap pictures of “anything interesting,” and really likes using the macro setting on her camera which allows her to take extreme close-ups that are still clear. She likes this because it gives her a new perspective on the everyday things around her. Sophia says she really loves photography (even over video) because it captures a moment in time, and “that’s what makes it more special.” Sophia said she has to “pull herself away from taking 5 million pictures and using up all the space on her camera or phone.” As for the shot that was chosen for publication, she said she was at the Peached Tortilla restaurant with her friend and was intrigued by the pattern on the wall, so she snapped some shots of it. When asked what advice she would offer students who want to get published in NG, she warns, “don’t expect to get published right away.” NG looks through thousands of pictures uploaded to My Shot, so it can be a while before your work is noticed. In the meantime, you can earn badges for the photos that you submit. Sophia just received a new badge for her publication in the magazine to add to her collection. Come down to the library and take a look at the November issue of National Geographic for Kids to see Sophia’s work. Congratulations Sophia, Lamar is very proud of you!

A Conversation with Mrs. Azevedo

What made you decide to work as a school nurse?

I love working with children and helping them feel better

Working with students and collaborating with staff in increasing health awareness!

If someone were to shadow you for a day in your classroom, what could they expect in a typical day at Lamar?

Assessing kids daily for their health needs, communicating with parents, and giving meds to

students daily!

What are some fun facts about you?

I play the violin, and have traveled to Belize, and Romania on foreign aide trips—working with

Saturday Morning Tutoring and Attendance Make-up

Attention Lamar Parents and Students, 11/13/15 To earn credit for a course, a student must pass the course with at least a final average of 70 and attend the class at least 90% of the days the class is offered. If a student fails to successfully make up absences, or when a student’s attendance drops below 75% of the days the class is offered, the student may request award of course credit or a final grade from the Lamar Faculty Attendance Committee (LFAC) through the student’s Assistant Principal. There will be an asterisk (*) on report cards by the attendance totals for a specific course in which the attendance is less than 90%. These will first appear on the 2nd Six Week Report Card. Please contact your child’s Assistant Principal to initiate any appeal to regain course credit. You may check your student’s current attendance online at grades.austinisd.org Since AISD’s middle school summer schools usually do not allow students to gain course credit solely for excessive absences, the LFAC strongly encourages students to make up unexcused absences before they become problematic. The most common types of unexcused absence codes seen on Lamar students’ daily attendance reports are the following (in order of frequency):

UNX (Unexcused) – usually caused by students not submitting parent or doctor notes for the absence in a timely fashion or not at all (the note must be submitted that semester)

DI (Documented Illness) – for illness or medical reasons - even with a doctor or parent excuse -missing most of the school day and not returning to school that day

HSS (Home School Suspension) – suspended to home for disciplinary reasons for most of a school day or for one or more full school days

The LFAC is allowing students two options - Saturday Morning Tutoring (SMT) and/or Community Service - for making up attendance in order to regain course credit due to excessive absences. Both options will become available to all Lamar students beginning November 16, 2015. Since both options benefit the student and possibly the community, the LFAC is allowing students without attendance issues to participate as well. All community service and Saturday Morning Tutoring verification forms must be submitted to your child’s assistant principal. Students may store documented community and SMT service credits for future use not to exceed the current school year.

Guidelines for submitting articles to the newsletter:

Come up with a headline—keep it short.

Include your first name, last name, and grade level for the byline.

Write the story in a newsletter format. You’re talking to parents, teachers, students, and

concerned community members. Make sure you are addressing all of them through the

tone/voice of the article.

Include dates and a location for the event. Timeliness can be important with a newsletter, so try

to report back about events as soon as possible.

Give us a description. What was the purpose, and what happened? Be specific when describing

the results. “For example, working together as a team of 19, the Lamar NJHS students were able

to put together 62 kits to distribute to the homeless population in the city of Austin.  Each car kit

included, snacks, bottled water, toiletries, new socks, and cards with words of encouragement.”

Be sure to have a conclusion of some sort. When coming up with your conclusion, consider the

purpose of the article. Do you want other Lamar students to get involved?  (List web addresses,

or any necessary phone numbers/emails needed for someone to follow up with.) Did you just

want to brag on your organization for all their hard work? (Congratulate them on a job well

done.)  Do you want them to come to a future show or event? (Provide details on the

dates/times/cost, etc.)

Pictures are important! They really grab the reader’s eye. (Remember a picture is worth a

thousand words.) List the names of all of the people in any pictures you’re including with your

submission, and make sure you have checked with them to make sure they are okay with having

their picture printed in the newsletter. You can also include logos or graphics whenever

relevant.

Email your typed article along with any pictures as an attachment to Mrs. Hames at:

[email protected]. Your article submission needs to be emailed to Mrs. Hames by

3:00pm on Wednesday afternoon for inclusion in that week’s newsletter. Mrs. Hames may send

you feedback about ways to improve the article so be prepared to made edits to your work. If

edits are needed, the article may be included in the following week’s newsletter.

The newsletter is sent out over 1500 people every week, and is a reflection of the school. Let’s

show them what great writers and dedicated students Lamar Scotties are!

LASA

The annual “LASA Showcase” in November is an additional opportunity for interested students and parents to walk LASA’s halls, meet teachers & students, and explore this unique high school.

Wednesday, 18 Nov., 6-8 PM: LASA (7309 Lazy Creek Dr., Austin, TX 78724)

LASA emphasizes academic excellence and college preparation in all core subjects, and offers signature electives like Great Ideas, E-Zine and SciTech. Students at LASA graduate with the most rigorous diploma offered by the Texas State Board of Education. LASA students participate in competitions like the National History Bowl (National Champions in 2014), Model UN (ranked one of best in Texas), the Visual Art Scholastic Events, and Science Olympiad (finishing top three in Texas since 2005), thus granting them the skills to succeed at the nation’s best colleges and universities. Students are given opportunities to experience teamwork, leadership and service through coursework, clubs, and activities like band, sports, theatre, debate and orchestra.

LASA’s program is nationally recognized: in 2014, Newsweek ranked LASA 8th among U.S. high schools, and the website Niche ranked LASA the 9th smartest high school.
