Some Research

“One in five new drivers has a crash within six months of passing their test.-www.brake.org.uk ”

1. Increasingly driving tests are becoming harder, with the inclusion of more questions on the theory tests and inclusion of questions in the practical test.

2. Are current means of learning aspects of driving really working? Or do people simply memorize questions and then forget them after they have past their tests?

3. Would a more fun way to learn aspects of driving leave a lasting impression on up and coming drivers?

When learning for theory tests and practical tests people have to rely on books, CD ROMs and simplistic, some may say dull internet mock tests. Even when learning the Practical questions of where you would find certain aspects of cars and how you would address situations again you have to rely on reading from the internet or listen to instructors. This makes me wonder do people really learn these aspects of driving?

Today a lot of the market for learning driving is taken up by DSA and driving companies such as BSM and so on. DSA have a range of books available to purchase as well as CD ROMs. They could be a possible client for my work, maybe commission me to come up with a way to make learning aspects of driving more interesting.

Knowing your way around the car..

Now before you begin your practical driving test you are asked a number of questions. Either inside the cockpit of the car or under the bonnet of the car. Such as, How do you check the oil levels?Personally I was taught this once maybe twice by my instructor. I want to create a game where the player can find his/her way around the car learning aspects of where to find oil, water etc on the way. This could also help people wanting to drive to feel less uneasy about stepping into a car for the first time.

As an navigation to the game learning your way around the car I want to create a panoramic view of a model car. Much like the Mazda 2 website players will be able to view the toy car in a 360 motion and click on certain aspects of the toy car to enter different areas such as the cockpit, under the bonnet and in the boot of the car. Players will be able to interact with aspects of the car inside as out to gain an understanding of what the car does, and their objective is to collect items of the car, place them in the right places, from maybe an inventory bar and get the car running again.

Micro Machines

Another game which I think would be a good idea to produce is one based around Grand Theft Auto. I want to take this style and use it in a non violent state. Here players would have to act out different situations such as level crossings, road signs and so on. This would combine the fun aspects of a game such as GTA and in the process players would learn driving situations. Learning under this way may make the information stick compared to learning from books.

Micro Machines

A possible concept or theme which would tie both games together would be that the cars in which you drive in ‘micro machines’ and the car in which you navigate around in ‘knowing your way around the car’, are toy cars, models of cars. This maybe adds a bit of light humor to the work and possibly work for people wanting to learn to drive, suggesting that learning to drive and getting in the car for the first time shouldn’t be so daunting and encourages them self-consciously not to worry..
