SCORING CLINIC PREFACE
• This is a PowerPoint to help high school scorers comply with NFHS scoring procedures.
• First, text on this screen describes happenings on the court. Try to make the correct entries on the scoresheet.
• Then, a sample scoresheet on the next slide shows how to correctly score what happened.

• The scorekeeper is Slyvia Smith, the first referee is Robby Fairref and the second referee is Ulysses Goodump.
• The scorekeeper should be at the table 20 minutes before the first set starts.
• Write in • Schools’ Names (at the very top)• Date and time• Location• SET number (There are 3 to 5
sets in a match. First team to win 3 sets wins the match.)

• Put in the school names again -- on the side of the sheet that matches the side of the court where each team will be playing.
• Add line-ups from line-up sheets provided by the coaches.
• Mark which team has first serve (the R2 should tell you who has it).
Think Geographically . . .• Teams are listed on the same side of the
scoresheet as the side of the court they are playing on. The team on your right when you look up at the court must be the team on the right of the scoresheet when you look down at the table.
• Teams always alternate sides between Sets #1, #2, #3 and #4. The R2 will tell you which team has which side in Set #5.

Lineup Tips
• If you haven’t gotten the lineup for both teams when 2 minutes are left in the warm-up period, tell this to the R2.
• If a number appears on the lineup sheet that isn’t on the team roster (remember, you should have gotten this when 10 minutes were left in the warmup period) – tell this to the R2.

Double Check the Lineup
• Compare your scoresheet to the Libero Tracking Sheet to make sure they are the same, with numbers listed in serving order.

The Forgotten Libero :(
• If a team has not written down a libero number on their lineup sheet, they will not have a libero for that set.
• NO LIBERO LISTED = NO LIBERO
• They may still have one for another set – but only if they write down a libero number on the lineup for that set.
• Mark the start time at the whistle for serve.
• Madison scores two points (points 1 and 2) on #2's serve, then they lose the rally.
• Mark the two points next to #2 and also hatch out 1 and 2 in the running score.
• The loss of rally sign looks like this:

Before each serve, check the number of player on the court serving the ball against the player number of the server on your scoresheet.
If the numbers don’t match, wait until the serve is contacted and then inform the R2. (The R2 may stop the rally, but may decide to wait until the rally is over to double-check the scoresheet.)

• Adams’ libero (#42) comes in to serve for #3. (This is not a substitution and only shows up on the Libero Tracking Sheet.)
• Put a triangle around serving position 2 to show that is the only place the libero can serve in the rotation.
• Adams’ libero scores three more points (points 6, 7 and 8).
• Put a triangle around every point the libero scores in both the boxes and running score.
• then they lose the rally
Libero Serving Tip• When the libero is on the court in one
position and moves to serve in another position without leaving the court, there must be a double replacement of other players. You should see one player leaving and another entering – behind the attack line. This is not a substitution to mark on the scoresheet. But the Libero Tracker must mark both replacements on the Libero Tracking Sheet.

Scoring is Demanding• Scoring correctly will take all of your
concentration. Put away any distractions.
• An accurate scoresheet contains all information the R2 needs to recreate what happened on any point in the match.
• Try to be quick and efficient, but don’t hesitate to tell your R2 if you need something explained or need more time.
• Work with your officiating teammates!
TRY TO BE NEAT• The scoresheet will start to get crowded
with numbers and squares and triangles
• The scoresheet will get more crowded with substitutions and time-outs
• TRY TO BE NEAT
• It is better to take your time and tell the R2 you are not ready yet, than to be
sloppy.
• Madison scores one point (point 6) on Adams #42’s serve (put this in a box)
• Madison substitutes #58 for #6

You can also use separate boxes to show substitutions. You will often need to do this for multiple substitutions
Substitutions Come in Threes
• Mark the scoresheet in three (3) places for every substitution:
• 1 - box score (put S or Sx and the entering player’s number / leaving player’s number)
• 2 - player number (add the new number)• 3 - substitutions (put a hash mark)
• Madison scores two points (7 and 8) on #58's serve then they lose the rally
• Adams scores one point (point 9) on Madison #58’s serve (put this in a box)

ASK IF YOU NEED TO
• Ask the R2 “What just happened?” if you don’t know.
• Don’t ever guess what happened
• If the R2 doesn’t explain what happened and there is a serve, make sure you find out what happened at the next dead ball.
• You MUST know what’s going on all the time.
Completeness Counts!
• Anything that happens during a player’s term of service is marked in the box score following that player’s number – even if it is something the other team does.
• X indicates action by the non-serving team• Substitutions (S or Sx and entering / leaving players’
numbers)• Timeouts (T or Tx) • Penalties (P or Px and penalized player’s number)
• Madison loses the rally
• Adams scores one point (point 10) on Madison #9’s serve (put this in a box)
• Adams scores four more points (points 11 to 14) on #30's serve
• Madison calls their 2nd time out (Tx)

Timeout Tips• Teams almost always call time out when
the other team is serving• Mark Tx in the box score (or T if the serving
team calls timeout)• Write in the score at the timeout in the time
out box for the team who called it• A team only gets two timeouts per set. Tell
the R2 when they have used two. If that team calls a third timeout, tell the R2.
• Madison subs back #6 for #58
• Adams scores four more points (points 15 to 18) then they lose the rally
• Madison scores one point (point 10) on Adams #30's serve (put this in a box)
• Madison #10 has a Re-serve (RS) – the R2 should tell you this happened
• then they lose the rally

• Adams scores one point (point 19) on Madison #10's serve (put this in a box)
• Adams scores two more points (20 and 21) then #2 on Madison calls the R1 a “no talent jerk” and gets a red card.
• Adams scores point 22 on the red card. Enter this in the Comments section and put Px22 in the running score and hatch 22 in the box score. You will put this notation in the Comments section of the scoresheet of every later set as well.
• Adams then scores two more points (points 23 and 24) then loses the rally.

Good Scorekeeping Habits
• Establish an unvaried routine in your scorekeeping.
• Complete the individual box score first (point, timeout, substitution, penalty, etc.)
• Next mark the running score, or insert substitute players’ numbers, etc.
• Last mark the # of substitutions, score at timeout, type of sanction, etc.
It’s NOT a Guessing Game• Don’t ever guess what happened. If you
don’t know, ask the R2.
• If the R2 doesn’t explain what happened and there is a serve, make sure you find out what happened at the next dead ball.
• You must know everything that is going on, and your scoresheet must show it.
• From time to time, check the Libero Tracking Sheet and the timekeeper’s scoreboard against your scoresheet.
REMEMBER
• You are the OFFICIAL scorer
• You are part of the officiating team with the R1 and R2, Libero Tracker, Line Judges and Timekeeper
• Your score is the correct score!
• So…
• Always do your best and
• Ask the R2 for help if you need it.
