Football and recruiting are viewed as the two most important sports in the southeastern

United States. College football’s top programs live in this region and each year they face the challenge of guarding their prized in-state tal-ent as programs cross state borders hoping to import championship-caliber talent back to their campuses. Fans stay glued to this drama year round, tracking official visits and watching the newest class of stars form for their favorite teams. The excitement, the drama and the the-atrics surrounding National Signing Day seem-ingly grows each season as more players make their decisions on national stages and more recruiting battles come down to the final hour.

BUMPER CROP ... The entire country flocks to the southeast-ern states for its talent, and this year that is es-

pecially true. In the state of Georgia, there are 19 different schools that have commitments from the Peach State’s top 50 recruits according to 247sports’ rankings. These 19 schools are from 12 different states, including Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, South Caro-lina, North Carolina, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. While the southeast as a whole disperses throughout the country, in Georgia the trend is growing. Upstart programs like Kennesaw State, Mercer and a still young Georgia State program have added a new dynamic to re-cruiting as the schools aggressively pick up in-state talent. Mercer holds some serious talent in its first class of scholarship athletes and Kennesaw State has already grabbed 20-plus in-state players of its own for its inaugu-ral class, including AJC 2013 all-classification

player of the year Jaquez Parks from Griffin. Georgia State holds a top 100 recruiting class in the country by multiple recruiting sites and has commits from all over the state. As these in-state schools grab talent, it requires out-of-state schools to be more aggressive in their recruitment of the state. Georgia products al-ready dot rosters across the country and it is going to exponentially increase. Different schools hit different states harder than others and programs stick to what works for them. Auburn had 25 players from Georgia on its SEC championship team this season and the Tigers have eight Peach State products dotting this year’s recruiting class, including St. Pius X safety Nick Ruffin. UGA has found some of its talent in Florida in recent seasons as well as its usual bevy of in-state recruits, and will headline its 2014 class with five-star running back and Florida-product Sony Michel to compliment Georgia five-star running back Nick Chubb from Cedartown. Cornerback Malkom Parrish is another headliner in UGA’s 2014 class. Parrish started at quarterback during his high school career, but showed previews of his defensive domi-nance throughout the season and especially in camps over the summer. At the 2013 Ri-vals Camp Series, Parrish shut down receiver after receiver in one-on-one drills and won the defensive MVP of the camp. Afterwards,

the composite four-star became one of the 10 highest-ranked cornerbacks in the nation across almost every recruiting board. In the ACC, Clemson crossed into the Peach State often to build its recruiting class and just one of the Tigers’ 10 highest-ranked commitments is actually from the school’s home state, South Carolina. Gainesville quar-terback Deshaun Watson enrolled early with Clemson and the consensus five-star is Geor-gia’s all-time career leader for passing yards and touchdowns. Georgia is expected to produce more than 1,000 football signees this year and Gwinnett, DeKalb, Fulton and Cobb counties are all pro-jected to surpass the 100-signee marks with this year’s crop of recruits. The SEC, Southern Conference and the ACC each will likely place more than 40 Georgia products on rosters next fall and it looks like Georgia will also be well-represented in the Big South, Conference USA, Sun Belt and Gulf South for the next few collegiate seasons. This class showed us one of the most competitive football seasons the state of Georgia has seen last year and we will be able to track the career’s of these stars with the first-ever statewide signee database found at SigningDayFrenzy.com.

Defense Peyton ManningFirst Recruiting Classes

Knowshon Moreno

Georgia Recruiting Richard Sherman

The Seahawks’ defense domi-nated the Super Bowl. It was amazing to see what they did to Peyton Manning and the Bron-cos. Seattle sat on the Denver running game (27 yards) and forced Manning into two in-terceptions and a fumble. The new NFL blueprint points to a young quarterback who gets paid minimally and frees up cap room for elite defenders.

In what could have been the final argument in his case to be considered one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, Manning laid an egg in the Super Bowl. Manning saw the opening snap of the game sail past his head and into the end zone. The Broncos never recovered and Manning added to his long list of big-game failures.

Mercer and Kennesaw State are each preparing for the first recruiting classes in their re-spective histories. The Bears have commitments from sev-eral in-state recruits, such as Jalen Penn of Harrison and Avery Ward of Chattahoochee. KSU, meanwhile, has com-mits from two dozen players and 10 walk-ons according to KSUOwlHowl.com.

The former Georgia Bulldog sim-ply did not show up for the Super Bowl. Moreno had 17 rushing yard and 20 receiving yards in the Broncos’ colossal failure of a game. It was a sad end to a bril-liant season for Moreno, who had career years in rushing yards, receiving yards and total touch-downs in his best season since coming into the league in 2009.

The Bulldogs nabbed several big-time early commitments and have moved in on a few attractive prospects late in the process. Ar-guably the top two players in the state, Nick Chubb and Lorenzo Carter, could sign with the Daw-gs. Chubb has been committed to UGA for months while Carter visited Athens this past weekend and is considered a Georgia lean.

Two weeks after taking all the credit for his team’s win in the NFC Championship game, Sherman was virtually invis-ible in the Super Bowl and eventually left the game with a high-ankle sprain. Although his team won a demonstra-tive victory, Sherman was left watching the final minutes on crutches. You have to wonder if he took credit for the win.

THE BIG DAYAt long last, National Signing Day is here. Score Atlanta will have you covered from start to finish all day Wednesday, reporting on the happenings at five Taco Mac locations throughout the metro area with tweets, broadcasts and other updates of all the student signings as they are made. Be sure to follow the frenzied action on the constantly-updating ScoreATL.com page.

As the saying goes on Super Bowl Sunday, “tomorrow we’re all undefeated.” Coming off a 4-12 season, that is music to the Atlanta Falcons’ ears. Full attention can be paid to the 2014 campaign and the focus from now until early May will be on the NFL Draft. Atlanta owns the sixth overall pick and could be in line for a stud offensive lineman.

PITCHERS & CATCHERSThe official end of football season is the unofficial beginning of baseball. Pitchers and catchers for some teams report this week, while the first group of Atlanta Braves is set to report next Thursday. The first offseason workout will take place next Friday before the position players arrive the following Tuesday Don’t look now, but spring is almost here!

HEADING FOR HOMEFollowing a Tuesday night road contest at Clemson, the Georgia Tech men’s basketball team will play four consecutive home games at McCamish Pavilion: Saturday vs. Virginia, next Wednesday vs. Boston College, Feb. 18 vs. Duke and Feb. 22 vs. Clemson. Interestingly, though, Tech has lost three straight at home but has won two of its last three on the road.

SUPER SATURDAYFebruary may not be heralded as the best month for sports, but Atlanta has a big event coming to town to help the cause. The Georgia Dome will host the eighth stop of the AMA Supercross season on Saturday, Feb. 22. Get your tickets now, because this motorcycle madness may be even more exciting than Chipper Jones’ snowstorm rescue of Freddie Freeman!

12 SCORE ATLANTA | www.ScoreAtl.com

The race for the 2014 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series Championship comes

through Atlanta with a competitive field of for-mer champions that will be racing on the big-gest stage the sport has seen. For the first time in history, the entire season is being televised live on FOX Sports and the Supercross tour around the country will continue to be tracked live with an estimated 291 hours of program-ming this season. The first half of the season has been highly-competitive as Ryan Villopoto, the defending Monster Energy AMA Super-cross Series Champion continues to pace the field as the man to beat in 450SX Class.

ALL-TIME GREAT ... The 25-year old became the first repeat champion in the sport since Ricky Carmichael did it in 2006 and has been the star of Super-cross over the past couple years. Villopoto’s blistering pace could eventually catch him up with racing great Jeremy McGrath for the top position on the all-time win list in Monster En-ergy Supercross at four career championships. In Villopoto’s first 75 450SX Class starts, he won 45 percent of his races and if Villopoto can claim a fourth championship, he will be joining elite company. James Stewart is a past champion who found success in Atlanta last year. Like most other riders, however, Stewart has struggled to gain prominence in the sport with Villopoto’s emergence and a deep field of riders. Stewart, the 2008 FIM World Champion, led all 20 laps in Atlanta last year and edged out Villopoto for first place by 1.468 seconds. Stewart sits in fifth place (80 points) in total points this season after the first five races and has bounced back from a disappointing four-point start in Ana-heim. Stewart will be slated as a contender in Atlanta with this year’s pool of 450SX riders. Villopoto has plenty of competition this season beyond Stewart in 450SX Class and 31-year-old Chad Reed posted back-to-back victories in Anaheim 2 and Anaheim 3 to put pressure on Villopoto. Villopoto and Reed each

won two of the first five races this season. Reed grabbed the lead from Villopoto on the first lap of the Anaheim 3 main event and held his lead against a trailing Ken Roczen to score his second win of the Monster Energy Supercross season. Villopoto still maintained his lead in the standings afterwards, but not by a comfortable margin. Reed’s 102 total points sat right behind Villopoto’s 104 total points through the first five races of the 17-race season.

TIE AT THE TOP ... In the 250SX West Class, Dean Wilson grabbed his first victory of the 2014 Monster Energy Supercross season at Anaheim. The win moved Wilson to third in the overall stand-ings. Jason Anderson and Cole Seely are locked in first place with 109 total points apiece. Last season in Atlanta, rider William Hahn domi-nated the 250SX main event and led all 15 laps in route to the win. During race day, the riders will hit the track for a walk-through before several rounds of qualifying practice runs. The opening cer-emonies begin at 7 p.m. and 20 riders will race in each of the first two 250SX heats. The top nine finishers of each heat make it to the main event and will be joined by the top four finish-ers of the last chance qualifier to make up a final field of 22 riders in 250SX. The 450SX riders have a slightly different schedule. The action starts with a pair of heats (20 riders each) and the top four finishers from their respective heats earn automatic spots in the main event. Finishers five through 20 from the opening two heats will split up (based on odd or even finish), forming two fields of 16 rid-ers for two semifinal races that will send the top five finishers from each race into the main event. There will be a last chance qualifier with 22 riders that will send the last four qualifiers for the main event with a short four lap race. The 450SX main event starts at 10 p.m. and boasts a field of 22 riders that will race for 20 laps. Photo courtesy of Frank Hoppen/AMA Su-percross.
