Genesee County Chapter Happenings We have been busy in the county selling safe act signs. to date we have sold 4,250 signs. We have also been busy doing parades. We marched in the Hamlin Parade in a joint venture with Monroe County and we had about 50 people from SCOPE and about 15 people from the NY Revolution Western NY. We gave out SCOPE materials and pocket size books of the constitution of the United States and we got a great welcome. We did a parade in Pike, NY with Wyoming County that went over great also. At our Tuesday night meeting on 8/13/2013 we had Steve Aldstadt come and talk. We also had John Piczkur, chapter chair from Wayne county talk along with Kathy Richardson, Wyoming County secretary. We are working on getting ready to talk to our county legislators that are running this year.

Grumblings from a Retired LEO SGT By Paul Dano Retired Sgt. MCSO Let me introduce myself, I’m a retired Sheriff’s Deputy, with over twenty years experience. I worked the road the majority of my career, served ten years on the SWAT team as a sniper, was a sergeant on the road patrol and a firearms instruc-tor / coordinator. I have carried a firearm for the majority of my adult life for protection, hunting and shoot-ing competitively. I now work at Beikirch’s Ammo, buying / selling and servicing guns and ammo. With that out of the way I have some grumblings about the cur-rent state of affairs, not only here in NY, but the United States of Amer-ica. Locally, Gov. A. Cuomo felt the need to hastily put a gun control act together, in order to be the strictest state in the United States on gun con-trol. The rushed law was poorly writ-ten, it is confusing to all parties in-volved and will do nothing to stop violent crime. What most anti-gun people fail to realize about this law is that it only increases the amount of charges that can be put against a criminal after a crime has been com-mitted, but does nothing to stop crime. If a person is going to commit murder how much do you think the criminal is going to worry about the number of rounds in the gun? We see politicians and anti-gun people make these pushes of legislation after every active shooter incident. Maybe we should look for other ideas on how to stop these senseless acts. One of the first steps that the media and our elected officials need to do is to drop the political correct-ness. If you are going to commit ter-rorism (school / mall shootings, mara-thon bombings, etc.) you should be called a terrorist. The media and politicians need to berate the indi-

viduals, not sensationalize the act and its perpetrators by post-ing their picture and death toll on the internet / television. If you belittle them, calling them the cowards that they are, then the next nut job will not think their name will become fa-mous. We need to harden tar-gets, put officers in our schools, encourage concealed carry by trained citizens and be aware of our surroundings. Another problem we have in our politically correct world is the lack of responsibil-ity for our actions. We want to find a reason as to why some-one kills multiple strangers. Was it their up bringing, reli-gious beliefs, or ethnic back-ground? Who cares? They’re crazy….So call them crazy! It’s the person behind the weapon, be it a gun, knife, bomb or car, not the inanimate object. Our lawmakers have tried to impose their will on us continuously from alcohol bans in the 1920’s and 30’s, assault weapons ban in 1994, soft drink bans and the current Safe Gun Act. All of these have one thing in common; they did/do nothing to make America safer. As a former LEO, I’m telling you the Safe Gun Act will do as much to stop gun violence, as banning black yoga pants will to stop rape! While the general shooting populace shoots thousands of the assault weap-ons a year, less than 0.10% are ever used in criminal acts. Following our lawmakers’ train of thought it would save more lives by banning automo-biles. The country that our founding fathers fought to gain our freedom from, England, a place where it is extremely difficult to own a gun, re-cently proposed a ban of pointed kitchen knives. How far do we go with these nonsense rules, which will do nothing to make us safer? Let’s face it our current state of affairs is our own doing. Not only

did we elect the current local and national political regime but we have-n’t done enough to protect the rights we so enjoy. How can we protect our sec-ond amendment rights? Introduce someone to a shooting sport. Teach people that a gun, if used properly, is safer than a car. Secure your firearms by locking them up separately from your ammunition so that unauthor-ized / uneducated people don’t have access. Be a responsible gun owner, get quality training and learn about the laws governing the use of your firearms. Last but not least support ALL legal gun owners from muzzle loaders, trap shooters, pistol shooters to the recreational shooter using his assault rifle to stop hordes of attack-ing pop cans. Remember it’s YOU who will save your rights!

THE STUPIDITY OF THE SAFE LAW. By Budd Schroeder Gun control is just the tip of the iceberg. Look closely and you will see more of the Bill of Rights being eroded and infringed. We know the SAFE law is unconstitu-tional, but unfortunately, the governor and a majority of politicians disagree in what some consider to be an un-ethical manner passed. They passed it without the input given to other laws. This was dirty politics at a ze-nith. However it is now the law. Because of the uprising of gun owners, especially in Upstate New York, signs saying “REPEAL THE SAFE LAW” are seen in more front yards and roadsides than the political posters. Gun owners are fighting back. Gun groups are initiat-ing law suits challenging this unjust and unnecessary law. The bottom line is that the law is stupid and won’t do anything to reduce gun violence. It calls for universal back-ground checks in private sales. So, up in a remote town or village in the Adirondack Mountains, a man wants to sell his shotgun to his neighbor. According to the law, in order for him to do that, the neighbor has to go to a gun dealer for an instant check. Let’s say they are forty miles from the nearest gun dealer who works part time and is not open six days a week. These men wanting to sell a gun will have to take time off from work and drive eighty miles round trip to get a NICS check. It would not be unreasonable to think the two men will close the deal without a background check and do it with a handshake. If questioned by the po-lice at a later time, they could say they had the gun prior to the law and how can it be proved otherwise? How many gun owners have bills of sale for guns they have had for a cou-ple of decades or ones handed down from family members? Compliance on this part of the law may be diffi-cult to enforce. Then comes the ammunition part of the law! Next year in order to buy ammo, you must have a back-ground check to get a box of car-tridges or shells. Add ten bucks to the purchase of your ammunition and

the outrageous prices one must pay for ammo now becomes even more expensive. This goes along with the elitist leftists who believe the rich can be trusted with guns, but the working stiff is really suspect as to his ability to own firearms and ammunition. Check this out the next time you talk to a politician who voted for this bill. What is more, you will have to account for the loss of a cartridge. So there is a thought going through email that during hunting season, have thousands of hunters calling the hot line to tell the State Police that they lost a round in the snow or in the brush and couldn’t find it. Then, a day or two later, call them up again to tell them you found it. That should tie up a bunch of bureaucrats for the hunting season. They might even complain to the politicians who voted for the bill. Or, you might have those “criminals” who lost a cartridge and won’t comply with the reporting of the loss. Again the problem of com-pliance comes to mind. Now, the Game Wardens not only have to watch out for the illegal taking of game, but the illegality of not report-ing a lost round of ammo. Maybe they can get some overtime to search for cartridges in a snow bank. Let’s talk about the maga-zine restrictions. A person who was an honest citizen last year suddenly becomes a criminal because he has a device made of sheet metal and plas-tic that holds more than ten rounds. Suddenly, he becomes a dangerous person worthy of a stiff fine and time in prison for mere possession of this product. He can share a cell with a criminal who possessed a sawed off rifle or shotgun. It’s the same charge. The gun owner who com-plies with the law and gets rid of his high capacity magazines and has those that hold only ten rounds can

still get in trouble. If he is not on a recognized range, and had more than seven rounds in the magazine, he doesn’t pass GO, but can go directly to jail because that eighth round in a ten round magazine makes him a criminal. This surely will keep crimi-nals from having too many rounds in their gun when they go to hold up a bank or gas station. Good thinking, Andrew! So far, noting much has come up regarding those who hand load their own ammo except that they can’t sell or even give a box to a friend. Again, another inconvenience for the criminal who, of course is afraid of the SAFE law, and yet an-other brilliant move by the politicians who voted for it. How do they manage to come up with all these wonderful ideas to prevent gun violence” They banned a few more rifles because if a semiautomatic rifle or shotgun has an adjustable stock, pistol grip, threaded barrel muzzle, or bayonet lug. We have really had a lot of homicides by bayoneting a victim, so that makes a lot of sense, too. The bottom line is that the SAFE act is one of the dumbest gun laws since the CoBIS law was en-acted. SCOPE members and all gun owners have to keep fighting the law and make the utmost effort to defeat those politicians who voted for it. That is the strongest message we can send. We have a year to look for peo-ple to run primaries against the politi-cians who are in gerrymandered safe districts and this can be a very effec-tive tool to make attitude adjustments to anti-gun legislators. Thanks for reading this col-umn. I like to write sarcastic articles upon occasion and this is a made to order occasion.
