Parallel sessions Thursday 2 July 14.00hrs and Friday 3 July, 13.30hrs

Topic Outline Location

Library infrastructure in 2025 Titia van der Werf, Senior Program Officer, OCLC Research

Scholarly libraries are embedded in an increasingly complex network of information supply and demand. How are libraries re-arranging their collections and services within this changing network environment? What guides institutions in their sourcing and scaling choices as they seek maximum impact and efficient service delivery? This session will be looking ten years ahead and will explore areas where libraries are likely to move services beyond campus (e.g. national-level, group-level, web), the drivers behind such movements and sustainability issues. Titia will introduce the discussion and draw on the work of OCLC Research, in particular the “Understanding the system-wide library” activity which aims to provide evidence and insight to libraries and help them develop strategies for cooperative resource sharing and shared capacities development. A discussion will follow about the conditions that can help libraries move forward and plan ahead.

The future of bibliometrics Philip Purnell, Customer Education and Thought Leadership Manager, Thomson Reuters

The field of bibliometrics has developed very recently and is considered a fast changing discipline. The immediate future holds significant options for national and institutional approaches to using bibliometrics; efforts by statisticians to improve the validity and reliability of results, thereby creating new bibliometric indicators; growing options of data sources and research output formats to increase the representation of certain communities; alternative metrics that give a more instant indicator of social impact and new improved mapping methods allowing the amateur bibliometrician to produce colourful visualisations of their field within a few hours. Perhaps the most interesting of all will be the budding interest being aroused in industry in the academic sector which holds promise for early identification of new trends and changing recruiting and collaboration practises.

What a difference a web makes: blended learning and the library Fiona Harvey, Vice-Chair, ALT and Education Development Manager, Institute for Learning Innovation and Development, University of Southampton and Jane Stephenson, Head of Library and Information Services National Oceanography Centre and Head of Library Services for the Faculties of Engineering and the Environment, Natural and Environmental Sciences and Physical Sciences and Engineering, University of Southampton

With knowledge everywhere, the world of information literacy has become much more than sourcing information but is now part of a much bigger picture of digital literacies. Librarians’ roles have changed and need to change to become more relevant for the digital age. They no longer just provide a sign post for physical knowledge but they have become the facilitator for providing advice and guidance around the use of a range of tools to support the student experience through virtual means. The term ‘blended learning’ has been widely used to describe how through a mixture of online and face to face teaching, and libraries are no exception. More and more information technology has been adopted by librarians to enhance their role. Fiona Harvey and Jane Stephenson will talk about how blended learning and digital literacies skills are essential for librarians and how they can be used to support the development of skills for students. Jane and Fiona will also share their vision for blended learning within the library context at the University of Southampton

EThOS Fringe A national e-theses collection? Reflections on the future role of EThOS and The British Library

Sara Gould Development Manager, Services for Researchers, The British Library

EThOS has now settled into a reliable and sustainable service supporting HE institutions to provide global access to UK theses. But it needs to continue evolving as research becomes increasingly open and repositories well-established. This session will introduce The British Library’s plans to undertake a consultation during 2015 to help us understand the likely role of EThOS in the future, including metadata aggregation, thesis discovery and access, preservation and the potential desirability of a national e-theses collection.

Jisc Fringe Knowledge Base+ at 4: from data administration to management information and beyond

Liam Earney Director of Jisc Collections

As Knowledge Base+ reaches 4 years old it has established itself as an integral part of the UK’s shared library infrastructure with over 90 institutions using the service on a regular basis. This briefing session will provide an update on usage of the service, its functionality and how it is increasingly moving from being used for the administration of subscription and licensing information to supporting management decision making. The session will also provide an update on Jisc’s work to integrate its various library support services into a more focused and cohesive service offering.

RefME Fringe Data: How might libraries use it by 2025?

Ian Forshew, Chief Operating Officer RefME

“Libraries are creators, curators and custodians of massive amounts of high-quality metadata” (http://www.iii.com/community/inn-side-view/what-innovative-thinking-about-linked-data-and-its-impact-libraries) What’s the difference between big data, little data and linked data? Why is citation data important? In what innovative ways is data being used by libraries today? What might this look like in 2025? Data can help libraries demonstrate value to internal and external stakeholders, inform collection management decisions, improve access, link library resources to the wider community, impact on student learning outcomes and more! Please join us at this interactive workshop to discuss the above questions and sketch out what a library with unlimited access to perfect data might look like in 2025.

SCONUL Fringe New strategy 2016-2019

Liz Jolly, Chair of SCONUL Mark Toole, Vice-Chair of SCONUL Robert Hall, SCONUL Treasurer Ann Rossiter Executive Director of SCONUL

The SCONUL Board will be presenting a new strategy for 2016-2019 at the AGM on Friday morning and this session will provide delegates with an opportunity to learn more about what is being planned. The strategy has identified a set of six core projects and programmes, including a leadership capacity building programme, and a programme on workforce planning. A third project will draw together intelligence and share best practice on service redesign while a fourth will look at how above-campus services can be brought together under the rubric of a national digital library for UK HE. Campaigning on the cost of content and a broad programme of advocacy work and support are the remaining two projects. The strategy aims to look beyond the next few years, to be ambitious and to the meet the needs of our diverse community. Please come along and give us your views on the proposals.

Ex Libris Fringe Primo – Discovery & Delivery at Coventry University

Gavin Brindley, Eresources Manager, Coventry University

This presentation will look at why in 2010 Coventry University chose to move away from a legacy catalogue and implement Primo. Consideration will be given to the implementation process, including the Jisc usability study, CU’s branding as ‘Locate’, and the development of different views for various campuses. The focus will then move towards looking at evidence of the impact of Primo on user behaviour – the increase in number of searches being conducted, changes in patterns of traffic through the link resolver, and the increasing use of E-resources. It will also touch upon the integration of Primo with Alma, and current and future developments such as the concept of ‘Locate for all’ - offering different functionality in different environments, with LocateLite for touch screen OPACs and Locate Mobile. Gavin Brindley is currently Eresources Manager at Coventry University where he has been involved with the continual improvement and development of the digital offering and has been responsible for extending that offer to increasingly diverse university communities.

Innovative Fringe Surprises? Not really! But a good evidence base. The 2014/15 Online Library Survey feedback

Colin Carter Director, EMEA Library Engagement, Innovative

During 2014/15 Innovative sponsored Sero Consulting to run a survey with a group of libraries to ask their users about their expectations and needs in relation to online and digital library materials. With around 3,000 completed surveys, while there were no big surprises from the results, we now have a strong body of evidence to support perceptions and preconceptions about user behaviour around these resources. Colin Carter will provide an overview of the results of the survey and the conclusions that can be drawn from the results. He will also talk about how this type of research can help companies like Innovative develop robust solutions for libraries.

ProQuest Fringe Enhancing discoverability and use of non-traditional scholarly content

Niels Dam, VP Product Management Dissertations, Digital Services and STM, ProQuest

Researchers increasingly produce and use information that is not considered within the confines of traditional scholarly publications i.e. journals and monographs. Thesis content is among the highest used content in institutional repositories, research data is shared and reused through figshare or specialised repositories, video is used to document research and to create flipped classrooms, pre-print repositories enable a discussion prior to publication and new forms publications like “The Conversation” have emerged to engage broader groups with an interest in research. In a more diverse world of scholarly communication how can libraries and information providers collaborate to enhance discoverability and enable end-user evaluation of quality? The talk will not seek to provide conclusive answers. Instead it will show recent experiments and developments, raise some core questions and encourage further discussion and experimentation within the community.

Jisc Fringe Jisc Collections negotiations update

Liam Earney Director of Jisc Collections

This session will provide an update on Jisc Collections’ preparations for upcoming negotiations. During the session Liam Earney will discuss the feedback that Jisc Collections has received from institutions and how that is feeding into the development of objectives and strategy for the year ahead. As well as updating delegates on the progress so far and the current state of planning for the year ahead, the session will provide an opportunity to contribute to these important debates and help ensure that Jisc Collections’ negotiations are informed by the fullest range of views and requirements.
