Pro- and anti-Syrian regime gunmen clash in Lebanon

February 10, 2012 Shooting broke out on Friday in the northern Lebanese city of Tripolias gunmen deployed heavily in two rival neighborhoods, one group supporting and theother opposed to the regime in Syria.

"There is a heavy armed presence and shooting in the Sunni Muslim neighborhood ofBab al-Tabbaneh and the Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen," a security officialsaid, requesting anonymity.

"One person driving by was injured in the gunfire."

He said the army had deployed in both neighborhoods earlier in the day, but laterretreated to a street dividing the two sides.

"Two soldiers were wounded in the clashes," he said.

The Sunni-majority coastal city has in the past few years been the scene of intenseclashes between Sunni supporters of the anti-Syrian opposition and Alawite Muslimsloyal to a Hezbollah-led alliance backed by Iran and Syria.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who is fighting an unprecedented revolt against hisregime, hails from the Alawite community, an offshoot of Shia Islam.

NNA: ‘Huge explosion’ near university in North Lebanon 

February 10, 2012  A “huge explosion” took place on Friday evening near Al-JinanUniversity in North Lebanon’s Tripoli, the National News Agency reported.

“[Multiple] explosions were heard and a huge fire erupted in the area,” the report alsosaid, adding that it “may be due to the explosion of an arms’ warehouse.”

Guards injured after gunmen clash in Lebanon

Three Syrians were injured in an accidental explosion at a munitions depot in the NorthLebanon port of Tripoli on Friday, a security source told AFP.

The men, all security guards, lit a fire to warm themselves near containers that storedmunitions, without being aware of the contents, prompting an explosion at the privatelyrun facility.

The blast increased tensions in the city, where shooting broke out earlier as gunmendeployed heavily in two rival neighborhoods, one group supporting and the otheropposed to the regime in Syria.

"There is a heavy armed presence and shooting in the Sunni Muslim neighborhood ofBab al-Tabbaneh and the Alawite neighborhood of Jabal Mohsen," a security officialsaid, requesting anonymity.

He said the army had deployed in both neighborhoods, but later retreated to a streetdividing the two sides.

Five people were reported wounded, including two soldiers.

Charbel voices fear Tripoli clashes are result of Syrian situation

February 11, 2012  Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said in remarks published onSaturday that he is “afraid” that Tripoli clashes are the “spark of strife resulting fromSyrian events.”

Charbel told Al-Liwaa newspaper that the situation in Lebanon calls for “decisivepositions.”

NNA: ‘Uneasy calm’ settles over North Lebanon’s Tripoli

February 11, 2012 The National News Agency reported on Saturday that an “uneasycalm” settled over Tripoli’s neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen,adding that intermittent shots can be heard.

The report also said that the clashes, which erupted Friday, killed one and injured sixothers including three soldiers.

Many residents in the two rival neighborhoods fled their houses for safer places, theNNA also reported.

The report also said that explosions and gunfire can be heard, adding that the Lebanesearmy is responding to the sources of gunfire and “chasing the armed people and thosetampering with security.”

Qabbani warns Tripoli clashes 'may aim to incite strife'

February 11, 2012 Grand Mufti of the Lebanese Republic Sheikh Mohammad RashidQabbani said that Tripoli clashes “may be an attempt to incite strife,” according to astatement issued by his press office on Saturday.

He also said that the armed clashes in the city are “worrying,” and called on theLebanese army to “put an end to violence.”
