Our teams performed well in each of their debates and received some great feedback from the adjudicators. It is wonderful to see the progress the Year 5 and 6 students have made under the tutelage of Mrs Ditchfield and Miss Faras. This Friday we will be holding our NAIDOC assembly and celebrations. All parents are invited to attend the assembly that will begin at 10am in the hall. Our Aboriginal Education team has planned a day of activities with guest presenters to run the workshops. We are looking forward to this special day on our school calendar. A few weeks ago we had a Lockdown due to a snake being in our playground. This was near the end of the day when parents were starting to enter the school. After reviewing our procedures it brought to our attention the need to communicate to parents the emergency procedures used at our school. Any parent who comes into the school should sign in and at this time they would be made aware of our procedures as there is a safety briefing pamphlet for them to view. Parents who have not signed in may not be aware of the appropriate response when they hear our bells. I have included this in the newsletter for all parents to read. Our quick reference for the bells is; Long means to Leave (evacuate) and Short means to Shelter (Lock Down). The all clear is signalled by 5 short bells. SINGLETON NETBALL COMPETITION

On Wednesday 19 June, our Stage 3 Netball team travelled to Singleton to participate in the TAFE Schools Cup, entering the Years 5 and 6 Mixed Competitive Division. They came so close to the winning post, winning three out of their six games, and finishing in third place on 11 points. Two other schools, Nulkaba Public School and Singleton Heights Public School, were both on 13 points at the end of that day, however Singleton Heights won on countback of scores. Our team had a great day out, and had the experience of numbers of different umpires, 30 minute games, and playing against boys for the first time (including some very tall ones!). Lizzie a previous Scone Public School student, was our umpire for the day, which was a great experience for her, and she also gave us some game tips beforehand. We thank her for taking a day out of her time, and

we also thank the parents who were able to attend and help out on the day. A big thank you to Mrs Shoesmith for organising our games throughout the day out.

Hallie, Sophie H, Chloe, Isabella Z, Laura, Beth, Charesse, Olivia and Isla.

2019 CONCERT Our biennial school concert is just around the corner and your child’s teacher has already been busy planning spectacular items. Please keep an eye out in your child’s bag for information regarding costuming and requirements for your child’s item. If you haven’t received a note by the middle of next week please contact your child’s teacher.

THE TRADITION OF THE APEX PUBLIC SPEAKING SHIELD CONTINUES How wonderful that Scone Public School’s amazing connection to the Apex Public Speaking Competition continues. All names engraved on the shield are either present or past students from our school. What an incredible record and one we are very proud of. Eloise, Hallie and Nathaniel are current students who share the honour of being named best overall speaker on the evening of their appearance in The Apex Public Speaking Competition, which is held annually during the Upper Hunter and Muswellbrook Eisteddfod. The fact that only names from our school appear on this shield attests to the outstanding standard of our speakers and the high regard in which we take this competition. Of course one day this amazing run of successful public speakers from our school may come to an end, but in the meantime, it’s a reason to celebrate - congratulations to all! For those interested, the other names engraved on the shield include; Will Grant, Sophie Grant (twice), Nick Quinn, Mackenzie Williams and Madeleine Baker.

Eloise, Nathaniel and Hallie Good luck to Hallie and Eloise who will be representing our school at The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition on Monday 1 July at Maitland East Public School.

BOYS PSSA BASKET BALL Last Wednesday 19 June, the Boys PSSA Basketball team travelled to Forster to play Forster Public School for Round 2 of the competition. All boys played an awesome game and managed to come away with a 47- 26 win. The team will now progress to Round 3 with a home game against Taree West Public School in Term 3 Week 2. Thank you again to all the drivers that allowed us to get the boys and the cheer squad to Forster … it was a long drive!

Kylie Dow PSSA Boys Basketball Manager

SAFETY IN THE PLAYGROUND

Please be reminded that no bikes or scooters are to be ridden through our playground, particularly at our busy periods at home time and mornings. Our students who ride know that they are to walk their bikes out of the playground via the Hill Street gate and then continue to walk them past the exits to ensure the safety of themselves and all pedestrians. This includes younger siblings who may not yet be of school age.

WHICH CHARACTER STRENGTH OUT PREDICTS INTELLIGENCE? Many of us used to think that to do well at school you had to be “smart”. Now exactly what “smart” is has been researched for a long time-taking into consideration multiple intelligences, talents and what is valued and useful in a society. Having an IQ in the superior range may not do you much good if you were lost in the bush UNLESS you had some other traits to go along with it. Research by Angela Duckworth who is the pioneer of the term Grit, identified that a persons’ ability to self-regulate out predicted IQ scores (or, how “smart” someone was) in terms of academic success and grades. What this means is that in addition to cognitive ability, people also need other abilities such as the ability to manage impulsivity, persevere, pay attention and reach goals. Having self-regulation is one of those strengths that seems to come at either end of peoples’ list of VIA 24 Character Strengths (www.viacharacter.org) - at the very top or the very bottom. However as we know, we have the ability to grow any strength we put our attention on or intentionally try to develop. For young people this can be helping them know how to tune in their attention to what they want to focus on (mindfulness, breathing), be aware of what information their senses are taking in (tuning in to what they See, Hear and Feel) and make a choice about which ones they will filter out or pay attention to. Understanding how to calm themselves when emotionally worked up (breathing, drawing, exercise, expressing themselves when ready) and how to set goals and keep working towards them are all evidenced based ways to help grow self-regulation and ensure that they do the best they are capable of. As parents, demonstrating this ability to self-regulate is a wonderful way to help our kids learn HOW to make conscious choices about their behaviour and increase in the ability to control their attention and manage their emotions. Where does your self-regulation sit?
