Racing at Merriwa - the time of your life! All ’Racing Roads’ lead to Merriwa this Saturday 26th April for the annual running of the Morgans Stockbroking 2014 Merriwa Cup, arguably one of the longest- established country cup race meetings in Australia. It is especially unique whereby the patrons and facilities are situated inside the racecourse and the racing occurs around the patrons. Recent good rain has not only been advantageous to the district; the track and grounds are in great shape and preparations are well-in-hand to ensure race-goers have a most enjoyable bush-racing experience with plenty of glamour on show. ‘Equine at the Frontline’ By Anne Davies (president Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival)

The Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival is just over one week away. The iconic King Of The Ranges is the fi rst event of the sixteen-day programme. The maiden campdraft will be run next Thursday 1st May as an individual event with over 100 competitors. The Stockman’s Challenge and Bushman’s Carnival will run from Friday 2nd May to Sunday 4th May. There is also the Art and Equine Ceramics Exhibition at Haydon Hall celebrating the ‘Chinese Year of the Horse’ and the Murrurundi Art Prize. For more details please visit the Horse Festival Website or get a copy of the Horse Festival booklet. The theme for this year ‘Equine at the Frontline’ has drawn a mixed response from people. Without horses, we as a society who have used horses for trade, communication and warfare would not have progressed to the level of sophistication we have today. It is hard to imagine what history would have been like without the horse. There would have been no raiding armies of nomads on horseback. The grasslands of the world might still have been full of herds of wild animals. Human populations

would have been isolated and adapted to their own unique physical and cultural conditions.

Civilisations have been making war for thousands of years. Humans are greedy creatures yet there are those who have gone before us who have sacrifi ced their lives in order that peace and freedom can be maintained in our country. Anzac Day is this Friday 25th April, more and more people are now attending the dawn service and march as they take the opportunity to remember and honour the brave men and women who defended our peace and freedom.

As we celebrate the many genres of horse events, whether it be watching horse sports or competitions, horse racing, horse demonstrations or visiting horse studs during the festival, remember that without these beautiful and noble creatures we would not be where we are today.

Another awesome Blue Heeler Film FestivalThe second Blue Heeler Film Festival concluded on Wednesday night, 16 April, at Two Rivers Wines in Denman, with the presentation of awards and screenings of the winning fi lms.The winners in each category were:

Junior: Score by 4G St James Primary School

Senior: Young & Beautiful by Gerry Loadsman-Wells

Open: Going Places by Vivienne Hughes

People’s Choice - Day of Campbells Corner by Lleyton Hails

The overall winner and Bluey recipient was Caitlin Bray for her fi lm, Two Young.

The evening fi nished with a free screening of The Sapphires; the audience got a bit of soul with this Australian favourite.

Congratulations to all the short fi lm entrants - the number of entries doubled from last year and picking a winner was very diffi cult.

Thank you to the short fi lm competition judges: Ryan Langford (Muswellbrook Amateur Theatrical Society), Bronwyn Purvis (ABC Open Producer) and Michael Dillon (Documentary Filmmaker).

All fi lmmakers are encouraged to submit an entry again next year. The theme next year is ‘Up’. Why ‘Up’? Because the fi lm festival takes place in Upper Hunter country. Get thinking ‘Up’ and plan your fi lm for next year.

Many thanks to everyone who came out to support the festival’s fi ve events, the volunteers, the venue hosts, the fi lmmakers, and the offi cial sponsors of the 2014 Blue Heeler Film Festival: Major sponsor Bengalla Mine, Hunter Mutual, Muswellbrook Race Club, Two Rivers, Muswellbrook Chronicle, 2NM/Power FM, ABC Open, Screen NSW, Upper Hunter Community Services, Muswellbrook Shire Council and Harvey Norman Muswellbrook

The festival organisers are immensely pleased with the outcome, grateful for the community support, and looking forward to a bigger and better festival in 2015.

Bennet to add a new twist to the Hunter’s ‘Best Street Party’ By Rebecca Jenkins

He’s the fi rst Australian pilot to successfully perform the world famous Triple Ribbon Cut, he’s performed over 600 aerial displays in front of an estimated total of several million spectators and on the 3rd of May in Denman, he’ll be barrel-rolling his way across the skies above the Upper Hunter Valley Wine and Food Affair. As the 5000 plus spectators immerse themselves in all the glorious culture, music, food and wine that will be available on the ground, renowned aerobatics pilot, Paul Bennet, is set to tear up the sky with his world famous Low Level, Fly-Over Aerobatics Show.

The show itself is ten minutes of fast-paced, bi-plane action. Starting with a dive of 2500 feet straight to ground level and reaching speeds of over 300 km/h, the display consists of a variety of rolls, hammerheads, loops and tumbles. It’s the fi nale however that is especially unique.

Paul Bennet is one of only two pilots in the world to actively perform the ‘Triple Ribbon Cut’ infront of a live audience. The stunt itself is a bit of a feat! Three ribbons are placed 300 feet apart from one another and 16 feet in the air. Paul then cuts the fi rst ribbon with the left wing, the second with the right wing and (here’s the easy part) Paul fl ies his low-fl ying Pitts Special Bi-Plane upside-down in order to cut the third with the plane’s fi n.

Paul’s aircraft, the Pitts Special S1S Bi-Plane, is a marvel to watch in itself. Named after its creator, Curtis Pitts, it’s specially designed to ‘defy gravity, climb, roll and change altitude’ rapidly, whilst remaining ‘crisp’ on the controls. When it made its fi rst appearance in 1945, it revolutionised aerobatic competition world-wide due to its size, light-weight, short wingspan and extreme agility.

The Pitts Special S1S being but one of the 40 different types of planes he has fl own in, Paul is stunningly profi cient in his skills as an aerobatics pilot.

Bennet to add a new twist to the Hunter’s ‘Best Street Party’

By Rebecca Jenkins Continued from page 6.

Winning fi rst place in a number of competitions and logging up over 4000 fl ight hours in total, Paul practises several times a week to ensure his show is of the highest standard and produces a maximum level of entertainment. Readers will also be pleased and relieved to hear that Paul Bennet has an accident-free record. But this doesn’t prevent him from taking his audience’s breaths away throughout the show.

Other highlights of the day include four stages housing eight live bands from 11am (this includes a performance by Rosahni Priddis of Australian Idol fame), a woodchopping competition with 23 plus competitors and of course, the wine and food.

A number of the best wineries the area has to offer will be on display, as well as fresh produce, and a wide range of different foods to tantalise everybody’s tastebuds - this includes Thai, Mexican and German delicacies.

There will also be the launch of GJ’s Later Tag, face painting, clowns and magicians just ready and waiting to keep your children and teens entertained.

The 2014 Upper Hunter Wine and Food Affair should prove to be an amazing experience for the whole family.

Paul Bennet is due to perform at the Upper Hunter Valley Wine and Food Affair on the 3rd of May at 11:30am.

Buses will be running within Maitland, Singleton, Scone, Muswellbrook and Merriwa.

Wilks: Whipcracking queen at King Of The Ranges

By Rebecca Jenkins

At the tender age of 10, Fiona Wilks had her fi rst taste of cracking a whip and demonstrated great promise almost instantaneously. Now, the 14-times undefeated ‘National Ladies Whipcracking Champion’ and 3-times ‘International World Champion’ is set to display her amazing talents at this year’s King Of The Ranges in Murrurundi. With the help of her father, Jim Wilks, acting as commentator throughout the display, Fiona will demonstrate ten of the winning-whipcracking routines she has previously used to ace the Australian Championships. She will also be demonstrating the bullock whip and performing tricks in accuracy. This involves match-striking, cracking various objects such as a cigarette out of Jim’s mouth and other examples.

Fiona will also be taking part in judging the Stockman’s Challenge Freestyle Final and the Junior Whipcrack Competition.

The amazing thing about Fiona’s talent for whipcracking is that she’s entirely self-taught. Her dedication and persistence has driven her to become a recognised and respected authority in the sport. She not only continues to perform with her father as a duo called The Whiparoos, but she is also a sought-after instructor. So sought-after in fact that she now has her own line of instructional DVDs available showing detailed and correct methods to perfecting the many routines she’s created over the years for competition.

If that wasn’t enough, Fiona also has a lucrative business handmaking whips, belts and other various leather goods for export, made mainly from high-quality kangaroo hide.

The Whiparoos performances are but one of the many exciting features at this year’s King Of The Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival. But make no mistake, they are defi nitely a highlight!

Other features of the festival include live bands, a camp oven dinner, ute muster, stalls and the Murrurundi Art Prize. All this just a side dish to the main course of which is the King Of The Ranges competition itself.

King Of The Ranges Stockman’s Challenge and Bush Festival will be held in Murrurundi from the 1st - 4th of May. Ticket prices start at $15 for Adults.

New South Wales Industrial Relations workshop in Muswellbrook By Zack Phillips

On Sunday May 7, the New South Wales Industrial Relations workshop will take place at the Muswellbrook RSL Club. This event will run for half a day, cost $150 and will teach people about bullying in the workplace. The New South Wales Industrial Relations (NSW IR) is a group committed to helping employers and managers establish fair and productive workplaces that meet requirements of the national workplace relations system. As a part of the education program, the NSW IR will be delivering workshops to various locations around New South Wales.

Our nation remembers the ‘Knights of GallipoliBy Rebecca Jenkins

On the 25th April 2014 Australia and New Zealand will be commemorating the centenary of one of the most important days in our nation’s history. It’s on ANZAC day that the nation stops to remember those who fought and sacrifi ced for their country. The day marks the fi rst military action fought by Australian and New Zealand soldiers during WW1 that led to major casualties. The mission? Go to Turkey, capture the Gallipoli Peninsula open up the Dardanelles to the allied navy and capture the capital of the Ottoman Empire (otherwise known as Constantinople, or Istanbul). If the troops were successful in their mission, it would have been a massive blow against a powerful ally of the German forces, subsequently knocking them out of the war.

But the mission was far from successful...

After charging onto the shore, our soldiers were met by unexpected beach side slopes and a rain of gunfi re. By the next morning, the ANZACS had run out of ammunition and had suffered great losses. Somehow, the campaign raged on as a stalemate between the two forces for eight months before the allied invading force retreated to Egypt. Both sides suffering heavy casualties.

When news of this tragedy reached home shores, it made an instant profound impact on our society and the ANZAC legend was born. The next year, in 1916, the 25th April was offi cially named ANZAC Day and a variety of ceremonies, marches and services were performed worldwide to commemorate the sacrifi ces made at Gallipoli the year before. Sports days were held in the military camps of Egypt, campaigns and patriotic rallies fi lled the streets of most cities, and in London, over 2000 Aussie and New Zealand troops marched the streets in remembrance. One London newspaper covering the marches poetically dubbed them ‘The Knights of Gallipoli’.

Despite its origins, ANZAC Day has come to represent something different to each individual over the years and rather than representing the Great War solely, it is now seen as a day that stands for the memory of all the Australian soldiers of whom sacrifi ced their own lives for the sake of their country. A variety of ceremonies are still performed worldwide.

But no matter how the individual may see it, ANZAC Day will always remain a day that defi nes us as a nation. That we all stand together as one and remember.
