Hurling and Football

The boys played several matches in the Cumann na mBunscoil competition and were unlucky not to qualify for the final. Their skill level has greatly improved and many thanks to Stephen Lavin for his after-school coaching sessions.

They also took part in the Árd Scoil Rís hurling blitz and played very well in all of their matches.

Thanks also to Tony Dunne who has been coming to the school every Friday for the last term teaching the boys the skills of football and hurling.

School Athletics Competition

Most of Fifth and Sixth Class participated in the competition which was held in Mick Neville Park in November. Individually, Jack O’Connor came second in the U11 run while Cathal O’Neill came 6th in the U12 category. The U11 team put in a very strong performance and came in 3rd overall and won the team bronze medal with the U12 team finishing in 4th position. Well done to all of the boys.

St Vincent de Paul Shoebox collection

In spite of the recession and all the doom and gloom about the Irish economy, the boys and their parents were extremely generous again this year and donated 85 shoeboxes of goodies to be distributed to needy families in the Mid-west area. The boys enjoyed wrapping and filling the shoeboxes and also filling the van when it arrived to collect our boxes. Thanks to everyone for their support.

Live Crib

The Adare Live Crib was held on Sunday 14th December. Our slot with the school choir was at 2.30p.m. In spite of the bad weather and many other events happening on the same day, we had a large number in our choir. The music was lovely and all were in full voice. Supported and accompanied by many parents, the boys and teachers really enjoyed the event.

Our shepherds turned out in great style at the Live Crib. Half an hour with the animals and the “Holy Family” was an enjoyable event for many of our students. Thank you all for making this event so special for our community.

Transition Year Students

Brian Curtin, Padraic O’Neill and Jack Canty, all past pupils, spent a week here helping out in the classrooms. They got to give lessons and help the teachers in the day to day activities. We would like to wish them well in their future studies and thank them for their help during the week.

School Book Fair

Our school Book Fair took place in November and was once again a great success with many parents using it as an opportunity to buy books as Christmas Presents. Thanks to everyone who supported it and to Sadie Neville once again, for her tireless work in organising and running it.

Árd Scoil Rís Trip to Calcutta

Two past pupils of our school, Kevin Degnan and Seán Hogan, along with Oisín Barnard a brother of one of our pupils, came to the school in September for our Colours Day. The boys are off to Calcutta, India to help the poor of the city as part of their Transition Year. We held a Colours Day and we raised €250, which the boys will bring with them and will be used for the good of the poor. Thanks to everyone for their support and we would like to wish the boys a safe trip.

Clothes Collection for NCBI

In October, we held a very successful Clothes Collection for the National Council for the Blind. In total we collected 40 bags which is the best ever response we have had. In return we received a cheque for €140 which will be used to buy books and materials for the classrooms.

New Whiteboards

Over the summer we added two new interactive whiteboards, one to each of the Infant Classrooms. We now have interactive whiteboards in all of our classrooms and they are used on an everyday basis by all of the teachers.

Pupils Achievements

Cathal O’Neill, and I Mark Twomey, played on the Sarsfield Cup Team of 2014. We played brilliantly against the South Team in our first match and we won well. We played the East in the final. This match was much tougher and we were very lucky to win. We really enjoyed playing on the team and it was the highlight of our year.

This year, our band “Wild Fire” played in the Milk Market in Limerick. The band comprised Scott Gilbourne, Luke Armstrong, Hugh Lawler and myself, Aaron O’Sullivan and also Arthur Cussen from St. Nicholas School. It was a great experience and we all enjoyed it thoroughly. I played the electric guitar, Scott played the acoustic guitar, Luke played the drums, Hugh played the piano and Arthur did the singing. As we got ready we were getting really nervous because all of the other acts before us were extremely good. Surprisingly, as we got on stage we didn’t feel as nervous but we still breathed a sigh of relief when our song finished. Before we went on stage we had a picture taken with the Mayor of Limerick which was really cool. Our music teacher, Fintan from the Croagh School of Music helped prepare us for this event and we would like to thank him for putting in the effort. Overall, it was a great experience for us and we would like to go back and perform again for the third time next year.

My name is Louis Morrissey and I also got to play my guitar in the Milk Market with Michael O’Mahony and others from the Croagh School of Music. The song we played was “Budapest” and it went really well. After the performance we got hotdogs on our way home.

My name is Michael Murphy and I took part in the school hurling training this term. We train on Wednesday afternoons from three to four o’clock. Our fabulous coach is Mr. Lavin, with help from his father, Pat Lavin. On Wednesdays we bring in our gear for the training and we also practise during break time. We are always ready to go at three o’clock and get started on the drills that Mr. Lavin has set up for us.

Mr. Lavin also sets up hurling blitzes during lunch time for all of the pupils from 3rd to 6th Class.

Our school hurling league begins in the New Year. I really enjoy hurling training and I can’t wait until the league starts. On behalf of the boys we would like to thank Pat and Mr. Lavin for all the time and effort they put into training.

Before the Summer holidays, we competed in the Limerick Community Games Table Tennis Competition. My team made up of Darragh Collins, David Howard, Aaron O’Sullivan, Michael Keane and myself, Hugh Lawler won the gold medal in Shanagolden and went on the represent Limerick in the Munster Championships.

James Collins (Darragh’s dad) coached us for the Munsters. A big thanks to him for all the effort he put in. On the 5th of July, we went to the University of Limerick hoping to bring gold medals back to Adare. We beat the Tipperary team which meant we were heading to the All-Ireland finals.

On the 16th of August, we all went up to Athlone to represent Munster. We played very well and finished in fourth place. We returned to Adare delighted with our medals and the fact that we managed to get all the way to the All-Ireland Championships.

Our Gaelic football season got off to a losing start as we lost to a strong Newcastle West side. We fought hard in the first half and there was very little between us at half time. However, in the second half they dominated play and we were unable to respond. Going into the second game against Abbeyfeale we were not feeling confident. However, at half time we were winning by a point. Going into the second half we fought even harder than in the first half. We were very unlucky to concede a late goal which put us behind and unfortunately that determined the winners of the match.

We had to win the next match against the Gaelscoil and at half time we were up by 3 points but our opposition did not give up. Our captain showed great contribution by scoring a goal which put us ahead and after that we stormed ahead to win the match. Our last match was against Rathkeale and we won by one point. Overall, it was a good season for us and we were very happy with our performances.

Santa Claus Visit

Santa called to the school on Thursday 18th Dec to reassure the boys that everything is on schedule for Christmas Eve and to check if anyone had forgotten to write his letter or had changed their mind about what they asked for. He was escorted to the school by the Fire Brigade and he got a rousing reception from the pupils and also the teachers. Everyone assured him that they had been extra good this year so hopefully he will bring everything on our lists! Thanks Santa for visiting us and bring us lovely presents. Thanks also to the parents who turned out to help Santa take photographs and provide refreshments for Santa after his long morning.

School Crib On Wednesday 10th December the pupils of Scoil Naomh Iósaf got together to sing at the unveiling of the School Crib. All of the parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters were there to listen to our singing. All of the classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class sang accompanied by Stephen Lavin on the guitar. Afterwards, we went to our classrooms to watch a movie while our relations went to the staffroom and had tea, coffee and biscuits. A big thanks to Joe and Pauline McDonnell who set up the crib and to the Parents Council for organising the magnificent event. We all had a great night!!!

We have a very busy, fun year ahead of us as parents. There’s a great social aspect to being involved in our Parents Association – it’s a great way for parents to get to know fellow parents – lots of lasting and rewarding friendships have stemmed from our meetings and subsequent coffee mornings. We would strongly encourage parents to come to our meetings or if you can’t make these, contact any member of the committee if you would like to get involved in any other way – we are always looking for assistance when running events.

Thank you to all the teachers and staff at Scoil Naomh Iosaf. The time and dedication they give the boys is very much appreciated. Thanks also to all our wonderful parents who helped in any way with recent events. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2015.

Halloween 2014

This year the boys went down town in their Halloween costumes carrying a very scary spider, which was made by our fantastic Parent’s Council. They stopped at the Heritage Centre, James and Carmel Collins’s Pharmacy, Lohan’s Centra and at the Montessori School where they sang and performed dance routines, choreographed by Mr. Lavin. They were treated at each stop to goodies and we would like to thank each of the above businesses for their hospitality on the day. They then returned to the school where the Parent’s Council had organised more treats and fun and games in the school hall for all of the classes. The boys had a great day and would like to say thanks to the Parent’s Council for all of their hard work in making the day such a success.
