It is very obvious that nowadays we all live in a world focused in technology, and in this world the speed is key for leisure, for business and even for every day’s routine; a break from time to time should be prescribed.

But the 5G technology is already being introduced to facilitate anything you can imagine, creating a massive continuous Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem networking with a super balanced combo of speed, low latency and cost. Liked or not, trends cannot be ignored; I think that this can be used, maybe, by adapting old traditions and old-used patterns and connect in this way different worlds. I’ve recently seen how a drone connected by 5G is helping a farmer to supervise animals in the mountains, saving him a seven hours walk on a daily basis, dropping food to the animals and even… barking to the sheep!.

There is a reminiscence of days where anything was manufactured, natural, in accordance with the environment. These concepts are coming back, we are returning to the respect for nature, and every single aspect/effort counts. 5G will enable a perceived and fully ubiquitous connected world without having to renounce to anything. And we can’t deny progress, so stay tuned shaping our world.

“Computers are useless. They can only give you answers.” (Pablo Picasso, 1881-1973)

The Latvian Night - Voyage to Latvian Heart and SoulBy Stephanie Bergin SIWC Publicity (IRL) O

n Tuesday, 7th May, the Latvian ladies and their community invited all the guests to embark on a voyage to ‘Latvian Heart and Soul’. This was the final event on the SIWC annual calendar and provided a fitting conclusion to a

very lively and entertaining year of social events enjoyed by all the ladies in SHAPE. The hosting of this event was historically significant as it was the first hosted by Latvia in the fifty-two years since the inception of SIWC. The Latvian ladies, ably assisted by all their families, that only number eight in the SHAPE community, worked tirelessly and creatively to showcase their rich culture and traditions, delicious cuisine and interesting tourist destinations. The guests were greeted by the Latvian ladies, dressed in very colourful national costumes and beautifully accessorised with floral headpieces made from a variety of fresh flowers. There was a great sense of bloom and freshness evident on the night, conducive with the onset of summer. It should be noted that the national costumes are symbols of the core values of a proud Latvian nation and its heritage. In keeping with the nautical theme, the Latvian hostesses invited the guests on board the ‘SHAPE Club’, as it were. The foyer deck was ablaze with colour and flair, as the ladies graced the occasion in many subtle shades of burgundy and white, synonymous with the Latvian flag.

While the ladies mingled and chatted, they enjoyed the exotic cocktails complemented by traditional Latvian hors d’oeuvres. These were aesthetically presented, also highlighting the wide variety of Latvian breads. The deck of the SHAPE Club was decorated beautifully portraying many facets of Latvian culture and traditions. One outstanding backdrop featured the colourful, handmade Latvian belts which are worn with pride as part of the national costumes, representing different Latvian regions. The most spectacular on display was the Lielvārde belt famous for its red and white geometrical designs. This display was particularly popular as a backdrop for the photograph enthusiasts, who wished to have a keepsake of this memorable evening. Another interesting presentation was the chart displaying the ancient Latvian signs and symbols, which are used to decorate many artefacts including ornaments, jewellery, pottery and wooden items. The guests were entertained by the talented Gerda Kaulina on the piano, despite an injured arm. She created a most pleasant and cheerful atmosphere, which permeated the entire night.

The Latvian cultural theme was once again very evident as the guests entered the ballroom and were greeted by the friendly hostesses. The centrepiece on each table was particularly Latvian in origin, as it was a decorative display featuring a yellow beeswax candle holder set on a bed of freshly cut daisies; the white and yellow colour combination was particularly effective. Latvians have a fondness for the honeybee and use the beeswax to produce many products. Each lady was given a beautiful gift representing many aspects of Latvian culture. The present included one of the Latvian signs and symbols made from beeswax; intended to provide protection or give strength, a piece of Baltic amber to bestow good fortune and a small bottle of their renowned liqueur Riga Black Balsam.

The opening speech was delivered by Sofia Ziakri, President of SIWC, who extended a warm welcome to all the guests, particularly to the SIWC Honorary Vice President Lady Caroline Everard, Mrs Annette Kneip, Mrs Marina Jacobs and all the NMR Ladies present at the event. She conveyed a special thanks to the Latvian NMR lady Mrs

Dagnija Kaulina and all the Latvian community, who provided such an amazing presentation of Latvian culture.

The Latvian NMR Colonel Gunars Kaulins addressed the assembled group, dressed in his ice hockey attire or as he said jovially ‘His Fighting Dress’. He mentioned that the Latvian community were determined to take up the challenge and organise the event and grasp this opportunity to promote Latvia among the other nations in SHAPE. He encouraged all the small nations to follow the Latvian lead and not be apprehensive about undertaking the organisation of such events in the future, as conveyed in his words’ Sometimes less is more’. He sincerely expressed his deep appreciation to all the members of the Latvian community in SHAPE, Brussels and Latvia and especially his wife Dagnija and his daughters Gerda and Agate, who invested three months co-ordinating all the various tasks to produce this memorable event. Finally, Colonel Gunars Kaulins advised all the guests to ‘Comfortably sit back, enjoy the excursion with our Latvian hostesses and adore our final destination called Latvia’. As a guest, I took his advice and thoroughly enjoyed my voyage to’ Latvian Heart and Soul’.

Mrs Dagnija Kaulina cordially welcomed everyone to the event and encouraged all the guests to partake in the entertainment kindly provided by The Latvian Dancing Group from Brussels, who danced at The Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Riga last year. She explained that this is the largest amateur choral and dancing event in the world. She also sincerely acknowledged the sponsors of the tombola prizes, who provided very generous sponsorship in the guise of flights to Latvia, hotel accommodation and restaurant vouchers, to name but a few.

Following the speeches, the guests proceeded to savour the Latvian traditional cuisine, expertly prepared and served by the friendly and efficient staff of the SHAPE Club with their usual professionalism and attention to detail. The guests had a choice of two traditional Latvian dishes as their main course. The choice consisted of honey glazed pork ribs and mushroom sauce or braised rabbit with plum sauce. The accompanying vegetables included pearl barley and potato porridge, fresh or fried cabbage. There was a vegetarian alternative also. The delicious dessert, maintaining the colour scheme of burgundy red and white, was layered rye bread dessert served with lingonberry jam, whipped cream and fresh berries. Agate Kaulina deserves special mention for her informative narrative detailing many aspects of

Latvian culture and traditions.

On behalf of SIWC, Lady Caroline Everard was invited to present Appreciation Certificates and flowers to the NMR ladies in recognition of their support and leadership throughout the year. The recipients were Katerina Gkatzogiannis Greece for her support throughout 2018-2019 Season and Welcome Coffee in September, Sandra Beasant UK NMR’s International Christmas Luncheon in December, Tuğba Öztürk Turkey ‘Turkish Henna Night’ in February, Delphine Houdet France ‘French Antilles Night’ in March and Dagnija Kaulina Latvia ‘Voyage to Latvian Heart and Soul’ in May.

The tombola draw was eagerly awaited, as the NMR lady Mrs Dagnija Kaulina had whetted the appetite of all those in attendance with her description of the prizes in her welcoming remarks. There was a superb array of prizes, very representative of the host country. Some fortunate winners received hampers with Latvian wine, beer, sweets, cosmetics and accessories. Other ladies were afforded the opportunity to visit the capital city, Riga, and experience first-hand the great

hospitality of the Latvian people, while enjoying their traditional cuisine, rich cultural activities of music and dance and visit the city’s interesting historical sites. I personally, as one of the lucky winners of a trip, look forward to my ‘voyage’, as it were, to enjoy a unique Latvian experience. Santa Graikste representing Latvia Convention Bureau, Hospitality Europe, was in attendance to present the very generous prizes including flight vouchers, restaurant vouchers and hotel accommodation in Riga.

During the meal, the guests were entertained by the very creative and talented Latvian Dancing Group, who performed traditional dances, demanding a variety of styles. Some of the dances were gentle and graceful, while others were lively and spirited. The national costumes worn by the dancers were very colourful and vibrant. The fresh garlands worn by the female dancers were particularly striking and generated many flattering comments. The dances were interspersed with a musical performance on the ‘Kokle’; an ancient folk instrument. The ladies were encouraged to join the dancers and attempt to perform the intricate steps with the assistance of the Latvian ladies. A very enjoyable time was had by all. The guests were then entertained by the SHAPE Band, who performed a varied repertoire of songs in their own inimitable style; lively and energetic.

After a very pleasant and interesting voyage to the ‘Latvian Heart and Soul’, the ship dropped anchor and Sofia Ziakri acknowledged the superb efforts of Dagnija Kaulina and all the Latvian ladies, who organised a most memorable evening. She also thanked the staff of the SHAPE Club for their assistance and excellent service, and all the SIWC Board members for their support throughout the year. She invited all the ladies to attend the Welcome Coffee on Thursday, 12th September, the

www.shape2day.com 6SCL

first event of next season under the guidance of the new SIWC president Mrs Helena Fortuna from Slovenia.

The final words of acknowledgement were those of Mrs Dagnija Kaulina, who graciously acknowledged all the support she received from her family and all the ladies and spouses in the Latvian community. She was very grateful to Sofia Ziakri for encouraging her and all the Latvians to host the event and the SIWC support. The Latvian dancing group, the SHAPE Band and the staff of the SHAPE Club were all appreciatively acknowledged for their contribution to the enjoyment and success of this cultural voyage.

Coincidentally, it was Colonel Gunars Kaulins’ birthday, so his daughters, Gerda and Agate, led a rousing ‘Happy Birthday’, supported by all the ladies.

The ‘Voyage to Latvian Heart and Soul’ was a very impressive event due to the genuine efforts of the Latvian ladies and their families here in the SHAPE community. They may be small in number, but they are ‘Big’ in heart and spirit. Their presentation of their unique culture through the medium of music, song and dance should be commended as it touched the ‘Heart and Soul’ of all those present. All aspects of Latvia were explored on this momentous cruise and all the guests experienced a voyage of discovery. Latvia was unveiled and all the guests sailed into this delightful country to partake in a memorable night of cultural and traditional activities. A sincere ‘Thank you’ to the Latvian community or as they would say in their native language ‘Paldies’!

We thank everyone for their ongoing support throughout the year and we look forward to meeting you all at our next event: The Welcome Coffee on Thursday, 12th September 2019.

Enjoyable voyage to Latvian Heart & SoulBy Dagnija Kaulina, Spouse of Latvian NMR

here were two main reasons for the Latvian community to accept this challenging offer to organise the SIWC event. Firstly, we saw a value to promote our country and familiarize our culture and traditions. Secondly, we wanted to be an example for smaller countries and to show them that this is manageable. I do hope that all

250 ladies, who came to the Latvian Night, left the event with great happiness.

The Latvian Night would not be possible to organise without the willingness, generosity and support from so many national and SHAPE institutions. It is not so easy to express our appreciation in few words to all of them, however, I would like to use this opportunity to praise and to thank those, who helped to create this enjoyable voyage.

“Kaļķu vārti”, ”Taverna”, “OSTA. Restorāns ar skatu”, “Pērle”, “Entresol”, “Restorāns 3”, “3 Pavāru Restorāns” and wine bar “Garage” those are nine Latvian restaurants which are eager to welcome friends of ours while they will be in Riga. Furthermore, we were delighted to receive gifts from thirteen hotels: hotel Dome Riga, Skrunda Manor, Radisson Blue Latvia, Pulmann Riga Old Town, Mercure Riga Centre, AC hotel by Marriott Riga, “Līči’ guest house, “Klidziņa” guest house, Islande hotel Riga, Ibis Riga Centre hotel, hotel “Bergs” and Avalon hotel. My warm greetings to Mrs Santa Graikste, the executive director of Association of hotels and restaurants of Latvia, who helped us to manage and co-ordinate this remarkable support.

To find not only these places but some more of our hidden gems, “Baltic Travel Group” would be more than happy to offer excursions in Riga old town.

Sponsorship by a soft drink producer “Valmiermuiža” and 100% pure juice and syrup manufacturer “Very Berry” helped to overcome our thirst . My husband was so delighted that his two favourite breweries - “Valmiermuiža” and “Brālis” agreed to be the ambassadors of our beer culture. While Latvian winery “Abavas vīni” showed that Latvians also are producing and spreading a wine culture. A small sample of a traditional taste for every lady and the welcome drink was provided by “Latvijas Balzāms” - the leading producer of alcoholic beverages in the Baltics.

A notable gift was provided by the Latvian airline company “Airbaltic”, which is the most punctual airline in Europe. The Deputy General Manager BeNeLux - Mr. Mathias Meere - personally agreed to present the gift to the winner.

“Love is the greatest value of chocolates and the main secret behind its unrepeatable taste and aroma.” That is how “Laima” - the largest producer of confectionery in Latvia - describes their chocolates. Not only “Laima” but other significant sweet and candy producers were included in the tombola gifts. Handiwork rooted in passionate love could be felt in the taste of sweets by “Skrīveru Saldumi”. They use recipes that were constantly improved in the course of three generations. By the help of “Rāmkalni” you could taste candied fruits that are 100% natural and vitamin-rich, made from locally grown fruits and berries. We could definitely be proud of the chocolate factory “Caps”, that makes simple yet complex chocolate truffles and wonderful gluten-free brittles.

To start the introduction with the taste buds of a Latvian, the chefs prepared a pea cracker with goat cheese and beetroot for each guest to appreciate. That was not just some kind of a cracker, it was “Krippu” - an innovative product made according to a special recipe and technology. They do not contain allergens and artificial additives and are extremely healthy! And tasty of course :).

Several ladies will become even more elegant as they won raffle gifts sponsored by our cosmetic companies: “Māra Naturals LTD” and “Stenders”. The brand name “Māra” has a very special meaning in the Latvian mythology, where Māra takes place as a powerful goddess. Māra Naturals products contain 98% ingredients of natural origin. Whereas STENDERS showed the luxurious side of the Latvian cosmetics, providing 24 carat gold soap for the lucky ladies to enjoy.

During the event we wanted to highlight that one of our national symbols is rye bread. This unique product was offered to taste by a very well- known Latvian bakery “Lāči”.

Due to the great support of Latvian National Opera the lucky winner will have a chance to see a top-class classical opera or ballet performances. As well as a visit to “Laima Ceramics” which is a very exclusive and high quality pottery producer near the Rundale palace - one of the Latvia’s outstanding monuments of Baroque.

The Latvian brand “Cherry Picking” designed home light decors which were also included on our rich tombola list.

We are so happy that Latvian folk dancers from Brussels agreed to be a part of our entertainment program. An opportunity was given for the SHAPE ladies to have an unique experience to hear our ancient folk string instrument “Kokle”. My great appreciation to Dagnija Martinsone and Daina Grase, who managed to build this “Soul programme” by involving more than 30 Latvian artists.

The Latvian Night is not only about support and generosity given by Latvians and the Latvian companies. There was noticeable support from the SHAPE community.

I would like to start my appreciation by mentioning the SHAPE band and personally its director James Bettencourt. When we asked if they would accept the challenge to play popular Latvian songs during the evening, he agreed without any hesitation. I can wholeheartedly say, there were real Latvian artists.

Big hugs to the SHAPE club personnel. Both chefs gave an opportunity to taste some Latvian dishes mainly prepared by ingredients available here in Belgium. The waitresses served the food choices at a sprinter’s speed.

Before the event, we were not aware of the SHAPE “Green house”. Thankfully, they were the ones who helped us showing that Latvia is one of the greenest countries in Europe.

It would not be fair, if I would not mention the support what we received from SIWC ladies. They spent their own time helping us to make sure that our Voyage is within the club requirements and high level standards. Endless thanks to Mrs. Sofia Ziakri - the SIWC President, who reassured us to accomplish this miracle. Mrs. Sofia and all of her family tremendously supported us in this unforgettable event.

In the conclusion, with great honour and certainty I can confirm that it is possible even for the community of eight families to organise the SIWC event! If you have any further questions about Latvia or willingness to visit my country, I do suggest either visiting the webpage of Latvia Institute or approaching any of my country mates and they would act as great guides for you.

WELCOME TO MY COUNTRY!

Painting is found in all cultural traditions and left on artifacts found in all continents through our world. Painting can

help record human history, share emotions and represent a side of personality, or even symbolize a new start.

A group of volunteers from the SHAPE Community Chapel left early one Saturday morning in May, to go paint at Le Kangourou, Maison Maternelle, a shelter for women, in Badour.

For more than 30 years, Le Kangourou has offered a safe place for women and their children who face multiple difficulties: domestic violence, economic strife or those who may struggle with mental efficiencies. Accommodation and support is provided to up to 35 people, to help them find their feet again. Each mom is giving a private room for sleeping, but the common living spaces are shared as well as tasks like cooking and cleaning.

“You have complete strangers and their families all sharing the same spaces, learning to live among each other,” said Brett Dodge US Navy, a volunteer.

“It puts things into perspective, like having our own bathroom and personal space. You know, the things you may not think to be thankful for every day.”

It was these shared spaces that the men and women of SHAPE Community Chapel painted. According to Chaplain (MAJ) Ronald Boyd, USAG Benelux Family Life Chaplain, “it is important for the shelter to provide a sense of warmth and safety upon initial reception of the women and children, and the new coating of paint helps.”

“I cannot even begin to imagine the horrors of cyclical domestic violence and poverty that have played a role in their families being

relocated to the shelter,” Chaplain Boyd continued.. “Traumas such as these have the ability to shake the foundations of our soul. I believe that exposure to good people, whose only desire is to serve, helps to restore faith in the goodness of humanity. This rekindles a sense of personal safety and helps facilitate post-traumatic growth. In essence, it gives the residence the courage to hope and hope gives them the energy to get back on their feet.”

One of the volunteers was overhead to say: “they didn’t owe us anything and despite being in their current position, they took the time and offered us lunch. It really showed the promise in people. I have a lot of hope for all of their futures.”

The volunteers on the ground made sure the painting was accomplished, but overall the project was a joint venture. The

SHAPE International Chapel Centre Charity Association (SHAPE IC3) found and set up the volunteer opportunity, the Italian Women of SHAPE (IWS) paid for the paint and, a fellow volunteer, SFC Ross (US Army), donated all the painting supplies.

The SHAPE Community Chapel’s motto is “Saved People Serve People,” according to Chaplain Boyd, and community service is woven into the DNA of their Chapel organization.

“We are a service-oriented, outwardly focused congregation leaning into the needs of the community, filling vital capabilities gaps,” Chaplain Boyd added. “This outward focus breathes life to our organization. In a transient community, our very survival as an organization is dependent upon multiple community links.”

This was the second charity painting project between the SHAPE IC3 and the SHAPE Community Chapel. Men and women from SHAPE, Chievres Air Base and the greater community, are welcome to join for future volunteer efforts. If interested, please reach out to Chaplain Boyd: [email protected] or through their SHAPE Community Chapel FB page: @SHAPECC.

Tombola means new frying pans for a local Shelter

Fundraising is an ongoing activity and a very necessary approach to fuel the many charity organisations who continually strive to make

life more comfortable for those who are in stressful situations and who need assistance. On Wed, 29th May, the volunteers of the SHAPE IC3 volunteered at a ‘Charity Tombola’ in the foyer of the Silver Spoon, from 11h00-13h30. Their main focus was to add to funds, previously raised at the IC3s Charity Glass Fundraiser, that would then enable them to purchase five heavy-duty roasting and frying pans to feed the thirty-five people who reside in ‘Le Kangourou’, a Maison Maternelle, in Badour. A simple request, but a very practical necessity for this worthwhile charity.

‘Let there be Art’ was a rather appropriate title for this charity Tombola. The five main prizes were all very creative compositions generously donated by local artists; the result of artistic inspiration. The largest prize, was a numbered watercolour print entitled: ’Marché aux Fleurs’ (Flower Market, Grand Place Mons’) created by Derek Wilford (UK), who lives in the local area.

Serena Ranieri (IT) from SHAPE, kindly donated two watercolours: ‘Peacock’ and ‘4 Rent’ and one of her distinctive graphic designs, called ‘The Heron’. The fifth prize

was two beautifully hand-painted glasses, donated by Australian-born, Sandra Dewar, painted at a recent IC3 “glasses for charity” workshop. All these artists have demonstrated more than their artistic inspiration as they have all been inspired to give and assist those in need in our society.

There were five separate draw cans, allowing each person to select the prize in which they wished to be entered. They were spoilt for choice and making a decision proved difficult. All participants were also entered into a bonus draw for two gift certificates for a massage: courtesy of “AromaSens” (Casteau) and “Naitre et Bien-Etre” (Jurbise).

A single euro, purchased a ticket that has given the IC3 now the final funds to make this purchase. It in itself will help to improve and create a better experience for those trying to raise their children in a financially difficult time of their lives.

The seven IC3 volunteers were delighted with the positive response of all the people who engaged that day, and wish to express their sincere gratitude for your support. Winners are currently being contacted and three to date gave us permission to include their pictures here.

A simple phrase that we often say, is: ‘Sharing is Caring’” which is very much the underlying motivation to become a volunteer with the SHAPE IC3. Sharing your time or resources, not only builds our community but gives us a chance to be ‘good neighbours’. Whatever you can give, it all makes a difference.

If you wish to be informed of future projects or things we need? Please send us an email ([email protected]) to be added to our EBLAST Dist List. You can also like us on FB @SHAPEIC3 or PM to arrange to receive any clothing/deco/small furniture donations to our charity room or garage on SHAPE.

WORLD CHILDREN’S DAYBy Colonel Kemal UNAL (TUR Air Force)

SHAPE’s children celebrated World Children’s Day with great enthusiasm on 14 May 2019 in SHAPE Alliance Auditorium. The SHAPE community has been

celebrating this annual event in a multinational atmosphere with great participation since 1999. As usual, this year’s activities were organized by SHAPE International School (SIS) and Turkish NMR. Yet the contributions of all nations in SHAPE made the day joyful to the extreme.

Together with Turkish NMR and SIS Director, spouses of Turkish Generals serving in Belgium, Dean and his spouse, NMRs and spouses, generals, military and civilian staff, and students attended this meaningful day.

On 14 May 2019, after having practiced very hard for their performance, excited children and their families and friends were ready in the SHAPE Alliance Auditorium for a spectacular exhibition. The display started with welcome messages, addressed by one child from each nation in their own language. After the welcome ceremony, the SHAPE International Chorus took the stage and sang two beautiful songs with great harmony. Director Mr. Jose Pittellioen and Turkish NMR Major General Sezai Özrtürk made the opening speeches. In his speech Major General Özrtürk addressed families and children, also noted that:

After the speeches drawing contest winners took their presents from the SIS Director and Turkish NMR.

During the shows, everyone in the auditorium easily witnessed the joy and cheers of the audience, the well organized and practiced performances of children, and the pride on the faces of families for their sons and daughters.

Finally, awards were given to both announcers.

Dear children I believe the most useful tools for you are peace, respect, tolerance, love and

affection. You are the lights of our beautiful countries. You are the future of humanity.

Mr. Jose Pittellioen

The World Children’s Day’s exhibition ended with the children playing with a plethora of colourful balloons on the stage.

True to the motto: “Today’s children, tomorrow’s adults”, SHAPE children have proved once again that they are the future of the world; altogether as one family, regardless of nationality, language and religion. The renowned Turkish leader, Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK, believed in the dream of: “Peace in the world”, he established the date of 23rd April each year as the Children’s Day, attributed to foundation of Turkish National Assembly on 23 April 1920. In the spirit of this great tradition, I hope that the memories of this joyful celebration will lead to a future of enhanced friendship and peace among all nations of the world.

It is hoped that this wonderful SHAPE tradition will continue to contribute to a future of enhanced friendship and peace among nations.

On the 15th of May 2019, Mons welcomed the 31th “Rencontres Grecques” Contest, one of the most popular cultural

events of Wallonie. Belgian “Hellenist” students across the schools of Wallonia-Brussels Federation, joined the annual celebration of the “Sacré Coeur” institution, paying tribute to Greek civilization and culture. The purpose of the “Rencontres Grecques” Contest is to promote the culture and values bequeathed by the ancient Greek civilization and present them to the general public. The contest comprises of three different kinds of competitions regarding Ancient Greek knowledge. The first one is called the “VERSION”, a translation test from the Ancient Greek language to French. The second one, named “KΑΛΟ ΤΑΞΙΔΙ”, a farewell message for someone leaving on a trip meaning “have a nice trip”, is like a “trivial pursuit” game with history, geography, mythology, religion, culture and arts questions related to Ancient Greece.

The first two winners received each a voucher for two air tickets to Greece by Aegean Air as well as other winners received accommodation packages in Greece as well as books. The gifts to the winners were presented by the Greek NMR Lt. General Konstantinos GKATZOGIANNIS. We are looking forward for next year’s “Rencontres Grecques”

The third one, “Rallye Pédestre”, is a pedestrian rally during which the students -as teams- from each participating school, follow an itinerary in Mons, answering questions about Greek history, geography, mythology, religion, culture and arts, but at the same time seeking signs and living proofs of the Ancient Greek civilization in downtown Mons. This year was the 4th consecutive time that the Greek and Belgian sections of SHAPE International School (SIS) participated in the aforementioned contest. The Shapian students wandered in the streets of Mons solving puzzles and looking around the city for traces of Greece while in the same time other Shapian students were testing their knowledge participating in ΄΄ΚΑΛΟ ΤΑΞΙΔΙ΄΄.The GRC NMR together with the Greek Community of SHAPE supported the event collecting the offers from Greek Organizations and companies to the winners of the contest. As the name “Family Support” may sometimes push customers to think the branch’s clerks are in charge for almost everything, from ironing socks to breastfeeding, sometimes there are some complaints for not doing it well. It is true not all clerks are always in the right mood to “give five” and offer candies to those who want to pull their legs or jump the queue in the waiting room. We apologize and blame ourselves for that while to be tempted giving in to our lower instincts, forgetting that our conduct must instead demonstrate politeness, self-confidence, expertise and selfless determination. Because of that we looked for a way to empower our team members by visiting NATO HQ.

The aim of the school trip to the NATO headquarters was to share experiences with those colleagues there, that are in charge of in-processing procedures, while also stealing their best practices and self-defence techniques to better face all the requests we receive daily at SHAPE. It is not an easy decision to close the office for a full day and head north, as in this period there are over 100 customers every day in the FSCEP waiting room for needs related to registration, protocol IDs, plates, housing etc, but we had to do it for the best of our future customers.

For a scared bunch of people from the deep Wallonie countryside it was a journey into the future!!! “…The interior design of the Agora, the connecting spline of the building, provides visibility for the office wings

No cleaning ladies pushing rickety carts, but daring free climbers clean the dizzying glass walls. No camouflages around, only 100 euro ties and 10 cm heels. Not a single one wild truck driver crosses the streets, everything flows in a tunnel and appears by magic from the underground directly in the canteens and shops.

What about to be fully in-processed at the NATO HQ? just few weeks !!!

Knowing that, can you still complain about waiting a few hours, some days here at SHAPE?

On the way back we wanted to pay tribute to one of the most sacred and honourable Belgian heritages: BEER. So we stopped at the Lindemans brewery for a silent prayer and a small sip, then headed back as fast as possible to Casteau. It’s incredible how a single team building day like that can change people’s attitude. Now the FSCEP personnel is ready and confident to serve all SHAPIANS, with toothy smiles and full commitment towards the exhausted customers. It doesn’t matter how long they have been neglected in the waiting queue.

Dear Customer,

After a period of downtime due to multiple technical reasons, the Family Support and Central Processing (FSCEP) Branch in building 210, can announce the re-introduction of the Customer Queuing Monitoring System (CQMS).

What is CQMS? After pulling a ticket for the particular service you require, CQMS allows you to monitor your position in the various queues real time by going on-line from smartphones, tablets or computers. There are two methods to view the progress of ticket numbers in the queues:

1) Browse to https://www.shape2day.com/arriving-leaving-shape or

2) Via the dedicated Twitter channel @FSCEP1

A Twitter account is not required.

You can monitor ticket numbers for all services offered by FSCEP:Registration, Housing, Fats Lane, Road Tax Office and VAT Office

It is highly recommended to arrive back at FSCEP on-time to be served. FSCEP clerks are not authorized to roll back missed numbers.

Don’t waste valuable time waiting for your number to be alerted.

CQMS allows more profitable time usage.

The Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day (Atatürk’ü Anma, Gençlik ve Spor Bayramı in Turkish), is an annual Turkish national holiday

celebrated on May 19 to commemorate Mustafa Kemal’s landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is regarded as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence in the official historiography. He and his carefully selected staff left İstanbul aboard the old steamer SS Bandırma for Samsun on the evening of 16 May 1919. Mustafa Kemal Paşa2 and his colleagues stepped ashore on 19 May and set up their first quarters in Samsun. Following Atatürk’s wish, the Turkish government declared May 19 to be Youth and Sports Day and made it an official holiday in 1938. The day received its present name, the “Commemoration ofAtatürk, Youth and Sports Day”, in 1981, which became the 100th anniversary of Atatürk’s birth. This day is accepted by the Turkish people as Atatürk’s birthday.

During that day, so many different kinds of celebrations take place in Turkey and official representatives in abroad. Youths sing the national anthem, recite poems, make parades and sports and realise cultural activities like performing folk dances and play epic drama to commemorate Atatürk and his companions’ beginning of the national struggle in 1919 that would lead to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, in 1923.

Quick Glance to Samsun

Taking this opportunity, we would like to give some information about Samsun where this historical event took place. Samsun is located on the north coast of Turkey with a population over half a million people. It is the junction point which connects Black Sea to Ankara, capital city of Turkey. And also it is hub for trade and the major lines of communication (LOCs). It is a distinctive and important tourism destination which is home to the thousand year’s cultural heritage of the Anatolia and the Black Sea Region dating from the time of Amazons to this date. With its natural beauties including streams, waterfalls, lakes and forests, its therapeutic thermal springs, its local architecture, its rich cuisine and rousing festivals, Samsun is a place of great interest.1 Kur.Yb. HRV NMR to SHAPE Colonel Mato Matanovic organised April 2, 2019 reception in Protocol Lounge on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of Croatia’s accession to NATO.

Col Matanovic stress It is a special honour and pleasure to share with you the joy of celebrating the 10th Anniversary of Croatia’s membership in NATO. As you know ten years ago first of April 2009 Croatia and Albania join to NATO.

Croatia’s accession to NATO is a completely clear national strategic goal to be a part of the most important political military organization in the world and thus confirm its affiliation to the Western world where Croatia historically belongs. The final achievement of this goal came four years later 2013, when it came to entry into the EU.

Croatia has 4.5 million inhabitants and about 15,000 soldiers, but as former US Defence Secretary Mattis said, “Croatia is a small country but is always competing in a higher category”.

I hope and believe that Croatia’s entry into NATO was not just because of Croatian beauties, delicious food, a wonderful place for a pleasant vacation, by joining Croatia, you have a courageous, highly motivated and victorious Croatian army from the Homeland War.

You’ve got a partner who builds own defence capabilities and we are ready to share them for the Alliance. Dear friends, thank you very much for being with us all these years.

The ceremonies were attended by Croat ian Mi l i tary Representative in NATO and EU Rear Admiral Predrag Stipanovic, spouses and members of the Croatian Armed Forces deployed to SHAPE, national military representatives to SHAPE and Partner countries, as well as flag officers of SHAPE led by General Markus Kneipp, COS SHAPE.

During the reception there were served native Croatian products, octopus salad, prosciutto and cheese, cheese pies, several types of wine and beers and various types of cakes.

On the 22 May 2019 the Allied Command Operations Financial Controller, Mr Christophe Rappe, hosted a delegation from the International

Board of Auditors for NATO (IBAN) on a day long visit to SHAPE. The IBAN is the independent, external audit body of NATO. Its main mandate is to provide the North Atlantic Council and the governments of NATO member countries with assurance that Common Funds - the money Nations provide to enable the NATO Command Structure to operate - have been properly used for the settlement of authorised expenditure.Guided by three core values - independence, integrity and professionalism - the IBAN strives to be the respected voice of accountability within NATO. The IBAN is responsible for auditing the expenditure incurred by NATO. The IBAN conducts several types of audits: • Financial audits of NATO bodies result in an

audit opinion on the presentation of the financial statements and on the compliance with budgetary authorisations and applicable regulations.

• Performance audits are carried out to evaluate the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the activities and operations of NATO bodies.

• NATO Security Investment Programme (NSIP) audits cover the expenditure made by NATO bodies and member countries under the NISP. The audit results in the certification of the final amount charged to NATO.

The IBAN was established in 1953, just four years after the signing of NATO’s founding treaty and has since been restructured to adapt to the demands of the environment in which it functions. The IBAN delegation who visited SHAPE last month were updated on a range of issues including NATO Command Structure (Adaptation) and the latest developments in the world of ACO Finance. The group was also given a tour of the CCOMC and the SHAPE campus. Mr Rappe, explaining the purpose of such visits said: “The IBAN is a key partner for ACO, helping to ensure NATO adheres to the NATO Financial Regulations. It is always a pleasure to welcome IBAN to SHAPE and is part of our commitment to transparency and information sharing”At the end of the visit Mr Patrick Alix, the IBAN Senior Auditor thanked Mr Rappe for the useful and instructive meetings and presentations.

Last month, the SHAPE International Band kept busy performing in support of the NATO Alliance, providing music for myriad events throughout Belgium. From playing in the pit orchestra for Chicago,

to rocking the house at the Make-A-Wish Foundation Fun Run, the band completed 25 missions. The SHAPE International Band is an inter-service military band consisting of seven ensembles and is comprised by eighteen musicians from the United States Army and the United States Air Force.

On May 3rd, the SHAPE International Band performed in support of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe Change of Command. At this historic event, command of SHAPE was passed from General

Curtis Scaparrotti (USA) to General Tod Wolters (USAF). The SHAPE International Band joined forces with members of the Latvian Armed Forces Band, the German Armed Forces Band, as well as the United States Army Europe Band to provide ceremonial music for the event. Afterward, NATO Unplugged performed at a reception in the SHAPE Event Centre, providing General Wolters a warm welcome for his command at SHAPE.

As the dancing season 2018-2019 comes to an end for the summer break, the SIDC had the opportunity for the first time to participate in the Make a Wish. Where 17 members of the club danced in a Rueda to

the song Los Campeones De La Salsa. A Rueda is a pair of dancers who form a circle, with dance moves called out by one person. Most of the dance moves involve include the swapping of partners, where the partners move around the circle to the next partner. The combination of elaborate dance combinations and constant movement of partners create a visually spectacular effect, which is fun to watch. Another event that the SIDC will also be dancing at is the US Independence Day Celebration at the end of June. In the fall to open up the new season 2019-2020 they will be at the Shape Fest in September to perform, take any questions you may have, or to register you in the club.

The SHAPE International Dancing Club is a Group 2 Activity ruled and controlled by the SHAPE BSG, which considers dancing as a mean for socializing within the SHAPE Community. What a great way to make some new friends from different nations, while having fun. This club

is open to all SHAPE ID Card Holders 16+. To become a member/teacher, there is a yearly subscription fee of 35 Euros for singles, and 60 Euros if you are a couple. The dancing season is from September to August. The yearly subscription allows you to participate or teach any dance course or participate in activity being held by the SIDC. One of the activities we support is the monthly Latino Nights that are held once a month at the SHAPE B3’s Sports Bar. Each member will be registered to the Federation Wallonie Bruxelles de Danse Sportive, so this way we as members can participate in official Belgium Dancing Competitions. As of right now we only teach Beginner, Intermediate, and Advance Salsa lessons. The style of salsa we teach in our club is the Cuban-style salsa, and we also do Salsa Rueda. But, there will also be bachata lessons as well in the new season which begins in September. Also, if you have any experience of different dance disciplines and want to volunteer teaching a new discipline we are always looking for new teachers especially for the new season. Come see what we are all about. For more information please contact us on Facebook or at [email protected].

Have you ever done a parachute jump? I have not, but giving a speech often feels like it. Scary, exciting and you never know

how it will land.

So here I am, one year ago, I am preparing my first speech called Ice-breaker. It should be easy, only 4 to 6 mins, speaking about a topic I know the best – myself. However it still feels like a parachute jump. Luckily I have a mentor. It feels so good to have someone who is always there when you need help.

I meet my mentor over lunch, we discuss and she gives me a couple of useful tips. When we are just about to say goodbye, she says: “So when

you have your speech written, you can send it to me. I will have a look if you want!“

A moment of truth. I never wrote a single speech word by word. It feels like the door of the plane is opening, I want to jump out, but instead of jumping I hear: “Don’t forget to put a parachute on!“

After a couple of days of trying to write something meaningful, it is Monday evening, tomorrow is the D-Day. I am approximately… nowhere with my speech. But sometimes a bit of panic helps. At 1am Tuesday, I send the speech to my mentor. Hopefully she will have time to read it and give me some feedback!

At 8 am in the morning I get a reply. “I read your speech twice, I like it! I suggest that you modify a bit your conclusion. You can add the title of your speech at the end to highlight the message.“My parachute is on, my mentor has checked the buckles, I am ready to jump! It still seems scary, but thanks to her I prepared better and I feel safe.At SHAPE Toastmasters, we learn to speak in a friendly environment, we share experiences and have fun every 2nd and 4th Tuesday. We meet at SHAPE Club Pathfinders Room or Mons Bar, socialize from 18:30 and start at 19h sharp. Please get in touch and be our guest! For more information contact: Lenka at [email protected].

ATO as an intergovernmental military alliance committed to international peace, finds the integration of gender

perspective as one of the methods to improve its operational effectiveness and to help provide the most appropriate response to a crisis. In 2010 the North Atlantic Council adopted the first result-oriented NATO Action Plan for the implementation of the NATO/EAPC Policy related to Women, Peace and Security, which is revised every two years. Finally, in 2012 the NATO Secretary General appointed a first NATO Special Representative for Women, Peace, and Security – Mrs. Clare Hutchinson.

The primary job of the Gender Advisor is to provide guidance and advice to NATO commanders on how to integrate gender perspective into operations and missions, crisis, conflict analysis, concepts, doctrine, procedures, education and training.

One of the unique things about the SHAPE International Library is the changing displays we have at our stage area. We have had exhibits

from schools and community groups here on SHAPE, and from local artists, to name just a few. This month, we have a special display created by two of our Library Technicians, Marie-Laure Desmanet and Ismahenne Drault, focusing on options for greener and more environmentally friendly living. The display highlights the importance of environmental issues today, and ways that we can do our part to help. Supported by local businesses like Le BB

Comptoir, the display showcases lower waste options or reusable alternatives to disposable products.

Upcycled and recycled projects are also displayed, along with books available at the SHAPE International Library on how to create these and other projects. If you feel inspired, why not check out a book on art using old books? Clare Youngs has written several titles on ways to reinvent old or worn books as decorative art. You could even pick up a few books at the library’s used book sale to get you started! Or do the t-shirt crafts strike your

fancy? Try The Upcycled T-Shirt or one of the many other books focusing on what to do with all those t-shirts our wardrobes gather.

These displays are changing regularly, so be sure to stop by soon and learn what sort of green options we have available nearby, ways you might make changes to your own routines, or other ways to reduce, reuse, or recycle here in the SHAPE area.

Something exciting is going on this summer at both your SHAPE International and Chievres Branch Libraries. Our blockbuster 2019

Summer Reading program kicks off June 7th at 3:30pm, as we roll out the red carpet for our star patrons! This year’s Summer Reading theme is “It’s Showtime at Your Library!” so get ready for all things arts and show biz as we celebrate all the ways stories come to life.

As with last year we will have a Toddler, Child, Teen and Adult Summer Reading Program. Simply by tracking your reading minutes online, you will earn prizes by reaching certain goals! Start logging minutes on July 1st and keep track through August to reach those goals. You can choose your own books, and read (or listen!) in any language. We have reading lists available at the library, too, if you want some ideas. Registration begins at our Kick-off Event on June 7th from 3:30 to 5:30 pm, but continues throughout the summer to allow newly arrived community members to join. Travelling? While the program runs from

July 1st through August 10th, you can collect prizes through the end of August in case you are away during the summer break. Moving this summer? You can even register here and transfer to any other US DoD library when you arrive at your new duty station!

A summer reading program is a fun way to bridge the summer gap, keeping students’ language and other skills sharp over the summer holidays. As part of the Summer Reading fun, free activities will be held during July and the beginning of August at both SHAPE International and Chievres Branch libraries. We will not have our regularly scheduled story times, but will have afternoon story times at both branches, as well as many other events. There will be movie nights, a band concert with the SHAPE International Band, a Summer STEM program, and much more! Check our calendars online for dates, times, and more details! All events can be found here: http://chievres.armymwr.com/europe/chievres/categories/libraries and on the SHAPE International Library Facebook page.

We hope to see you in the library this summer!

Keeping safe and healthy in the

summer By Antoaneta S. Lazarova, Environmental Health Technician, SHAPE Healthcare Facility

Summer is upon us! The sun is out and shining and that means more opportunity for outdoor activities. Now is the most important time of the year to prepare for potential health risks

associated with sunshine and warmer temperatures.

Sunburn is a common summer injury that can be easily prevented. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, getting one blistering sunburn when you are a kid doubles your chances of developing melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations (genetic defects) that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. The best way to avoid a sunburn is to avoid the sun; however, during the warm summer months that is almost impossible. To protect yourself from the sun, always apply at least a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 15 sunscreen or higher to skin 30 minutes before exposure.

Another summer injury is overheating. While Belgium doesn’t get too many extremely hot days, heat stroke is still very possible. The most important thing you can do is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is key to your health! Staying in the

shade will help you if you feel light headed, dizzy, fatigued, or confused. Planning activities at cooler times of the day, such as early morning or evening, could avoid such injuries.

An allergy to pollen can turn an innocent summer outing into an itching, tearing, nose-running affair. Plan your outdoor activities on cooler, humid days, or after a cleansing rain. Pollen counts tend to be lower during those types of climates. Medications also can help you overcome the effects of pollen.

With the weather shaping up for optimal camping season, preparing safe food and water is essential to staying healthy

while exploring Mother Nature. Pack foods in tight, waterproof bags or containers, keep them in an insulated cooler and cook to proper temperatures. While hiking or biking, wear sturdy shoes and never go alone. Unfortunately, bright colors and floral prints attract bees, wasps, mosquitos and other insects. Applying bug repellent regularly can fight against all of them. Also, check yourself regularly for ticks. Never approach wild animals and take every precaution against wildlife.

Camping often includes playing in and around the water. To help protect yourself and your fellow campers from illness, don’t swim if you have diarrhea, and do not swallow the water you swim in. Never swim alone and always wear your life jacket. Do not trust a child’s life to another child. Teach children to always ask permission to go near water. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection. If you are around water and your child is missing, always check the water first- every seconds counts when it comes to water safety.

Finally, as we have seen an alarming trend in the number of children left alone in vehicles during hot temperatures,

www.shape2day.com 40SCL

never leave your child unattended in the car. Within one minute your car temperature can increase by ten degrees. A good rule of thumb is to place your purse, laptop bag or something you always check for before leaving the car in the backseat with your child to ensure you glance that way. This may save your child’s life.

While the summer months are always a great time to increase the amount of activity you incorporate into your life, it is very important to ensure measures are implemented to keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe. For more information on summer safety, visit the Centers for Disease and Prevention Control at https: //go.usa.gov/xmFcJ.

TheOnlyCity inTheWorldBuiltOnTwoContinentsWith one arm reaching out to Asia and the other to Europe, İstanbul is the only city in the world built on two continents. The İstanbul Strait courses the waters of the Black Sea, the Sea of Marmara and the Golden Horn through the city’s heart.İstanbul’s fate has been sealed by its vital strategic location and its enchanting natural beauty. For more than 1500 years it was the capital of three empires: Roman, Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires. It was beautified accordingly with magnificent monuments and became a metropolis where diverse cultures, nations and religions mingled. Those cultures, nations and religions are the small pieces that form the mosaic of İstanbul. It is İstanbul’s endless variety that fascinates its visitors. The museums, churches, palaces, grand mosques, bazaars and sites of natural beauty are countless. As relaxing on the western

shores of the İstanbul Strait at sunset and watching the red evening light reflected on the other continent, you may suddenly and profoundly understand why so many centuries ago settlers chose to build a city on this remarkable site. At such times, you can see why İstanbul is truly one of the most glorious cities in the world.GLORIOUSTREASURESAs an imperial capital of 1500 years, İstanbul is rich in architectural monuments reflecting its past splendour. The most magnificent of İstanbul’s monuments are clustered on the historical peninsula, the triangular piece of land surrounded by the Sea of Marmara to the east and south, by the Golden Horn to the north and by the city walls to the west. The Historic Areas of İstanbul was inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1985, enchanting visitors with an impressive texture. Sultanahmet Square is the core of the historical peninsula and the most

prominent examples of Byzantine and Ottoman architecture can be seen in close proximity here.GREATMYSTICSYMBOLSThe most glorious architectural heritage of the Byzantine Empire is the Hagia Sophia which is referred to as the 8th Wonder of the World. Aged more than 1500 years old, it is one of the great symbols of İstanbul. The mosaics of Hagia Sophia, which were uncovered after it became a museum, are the foremost examples of Byzantine art of the 9th to 12th centuries. The Kariye Museum (Chora Church) is another Byzantine monument famous for its fine mosaics and frescoes. The Neve Shalom, Ahrida and Aşkenazi synagogues are three of the most important sacred places for Judaism in İstanbul. The Topkapı Palace is particularly important for the Mukaddes Emanetler Dairesi (Chamber of Holy Relics) where the Prophet Muhammed’s Hırka-i Saadet (Blessed Mantle) and Sancak-ı Şerif

(Holy Banner) are kept in their golden chests. The Sultan Ahmet Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque, was built between 1609 and 1616 and houses the tomb of its founder, Sultan Ahmed I, a madrasah and a hospice.HISTORICAREASOFİSTANBULThe Historic Areas of İstanbul, inscribed in the World Heritage List in 1985, cover four main areas: the Archaeological Park, the Süleymaniye Mosque and its associated Conservation Area, Zeyrek Mosque and its asscoiated Conservation Area, and the City Walls of İstanbul. In its evalulation report the International Council on Monuments and Sites has stated that one cannot conceive of the World Heritage List without İstanbul, which has been associated with the world’s major political, religious and artistic events for over 2000 years. The cultural property in this area includes unique monuments and masterpieces of universal architecture, two of which are the Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya), built by Anthemios of Tralles and Isidoros of Milet in 532-537, and the Süleymaniye Mosque. The 6650m city walls of Theodosius II, with its second line of defences created in 447, has been one of the leading references for military architecture.THEOTHERSHOREAnother historical area of İstanbul, on the opposite shore of the Golden Horn, is the former district of Pera, meaning ’the other shore’. Settled by Genoese and Venetians in the 12th century, this quarter was inhabited mostly by Levantines and represented the western face of the city. The cosmopolitan character of ancient İstanbul is reflected in the following buildings there: the Galata Tower built by the Genoese, stately consulates which were embassies before the capital was moved to Ankara, and the art nouveau buildings of İstiklal Avenue. St Antoine Cathedral, a silent and tranquil spot on this avenue, is visited frequently by devout visitors from every religion. The Yıldız Palace and the Dolmabahçe Place on the shores of the İstanbul Strait were once the residences of the Ottoman Sultans, after Topkapı Palace.

THEİSTANBULSTRAITA stay in İstanbul is not complete without a traditional and unforgettable boat excursion up the İstanbul Strait, the strait that separates Europe and Asia. Its shores offer a delightful mixture of past and present, grand splendour and simple beauty.

Modern hotels stand next to yalı (waterfront wooden villas); marble palaces abut on rustic stone fortresses and elegant compounds neighbour small fishing villages.

The best way to see the İstanbul Strait is to board one of the passenger boats that regularly zigzag along the shores. Embark at Eminönü and stop alternately on the Asian and European sides of the strait! The round-trip excursion, very

reasonably priced, takes about six hours.

During the trip you will go past the magnificent Dolmabahçe Palace, while further along rise the green parks and imperial pavilions of the Yıldız Palace. To the waterfront of the parks stands the Çırağan Palace. At Ortaköy, the next stop, every Sunday artists gather to exhibit their works in a streetside gallery with the variety of people creating a lively scene. And note its church, mosque and synagogue that have existed side by side for hundreds of years – a tribute to Turkey’s tolerance at the grass-roots level. Overshadowing İstanbul’s traditional architecture at Ortaköy is one of the world’s largest suspension bridges linking Europe and Asia.

THEGOLDENHORN“HALİÇ”This horn-shaped estuary known as the Golden Horn divides European İstanbul into two. As one of the best natural harbours in the world, the Byzantine and Ottoman navies and their commercial shipping interests were centred here. Today, lovely parks and promenades line the shores where the setting sun casts a golden hue on the water. The Pierre Loti Cafe, atop the hill overlooking the shrine, is a wonderful place to enjoy an alternative view of İstanbul.

SPLENDIDENTERTAINMENTİstanbul also has a rich program of entertainment; bars, pubs, nightclubs and discos are plentiful and there are countless restaurants offering Turkish cuisine with all its local varieties, not to mention the Italian, French, Japanese, Chinese and Lebanese cuisine.

There are modern discos, cabaret and jazz clubs in the Taksim-Harbiye district. In Sultanahmet, there are a number of restaurants set in restored Byzantine and Ottoman premises which offer a unique setting for an evening out.

People have been meeting for years at Çiçek Pasajı in Beyoğlu for snacks and seafood specialties and nearby is narrow Nevizade Street- the best place in İstanbul for eating Turkish specialties and drinks.

On the shores of the İstanbul Strait, Ortaköy is the best place for nightlife in İstanbul with its nightclubs, jazz clubs,

fine seafood restaurants and bars.

SHOPPINGİstanbul is a shopper’s paradise, catering to all kinds of customers. From covered bazaars and workshops that continue ancient traditions, to shopping malls and department stores, İstanbul offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities.

Kapalı Çarşı (Grand Bazaar) and Mısır Çarşısı (Spice Bazaar) are the two most visited places in İstanbul. Kapalı Çarşı has evolved into its present form over a period of 250 years, and today sells everything from antiques to jewellery, from gold to affordable souvenirs in over 3000 shops. Today both Kapalı Çarşı and Mısır Çarşısı are places for finding plenty

alternatives for souvenirs and mementos of İstanbul. Arasta Çarşısı (Arasta Bazaar), situated behind the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, is yet another place where authentic goods and handicrafts can be found and Sultanahmet and its environs are other similar areas. Old book enthusiasts should visit the Sahaflar Çarşısı (Booksellers’ Market), which is situated between Beyazıt Mosque and Kapalı Çarşı.

THEAIRPORTSINİSTANBULLocated in the heart of the world, Istanbul is easily accessible by air. The city has three international airports; new İstanbul and Ataturk Airports on the European side and the Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side.

With the sun beating down (as I write this) and turning everybody pale white to a golden

brown or sun-burnt red, it’s hard to believe that just a couple of short weeks ago I was in the eastern part of Slovakia watching the Ice Hockey World Championships at the Steel Arena in Kosice.

Unlike most championships where national teams are involved, the hockey world has theirs every year. Since there aren’t many teams that can compete at the top level, the tournament is always held in one of the 16 countries that compete in the top group. One group of eight played in Kosice this year and the other in the capital, Bratislava.

I managed to get my hands on tickets for three different games. They weren’t considered to be top games but twice I got to see the USA play. Seeing my team is good enough for me, no matter who they play.

My first game was the USA against France. If this was a football game, I would probably be worried about losing but this time I had no doubt and would have bet money on it that the USA would win.

With my brother-in-law Vlado, we took an early train from Presov (my wife’s hometown) to Kosice, paying less than two Euros for the journey, then stopping for refreshments before the short walk to the arena. The weather was very sunny and so strolling through the city watching the fans in their national shirts and speaking different languages and English with different accents made me feel like I was at SHAPE. The three games that day were the British against the Canadians, the Danish against the Germans and the USA game.

The Steel Arena is the home of HK Kosice, a professional team that plays in the Tipsport League, Slovakia’s top division. The arena is also the second largest in the country, comfortably seating just over 8300 fans. Having been to several NHL games in the USA, I would rate the venue right up there with those.

The French team played hard but it was obvious from the very beginning that they were going to be outclassed and outscored by an American team consisting of mostly NHL players as well as a couple of teenaged brothers. For the USA, these World Championships aren’t really the top of their priority list. Many of the best American players just don’t want to go through a full NHL season and then head to Europe to play some more. So although we put out a good team, it isn’t our best team. The same can be said for the Canadians.

With the excuses out of the way, I can tell you that the USA won this game 7-1. They did however lose the day before

to Slovakia.

After the game we headed to the fan zone to have a beer and enjoy the festivities.

Two days later I took the train to Kosice again; this time to see Denmark against Great Britain. Yes, you heard it right - Great Britain. You’d be forgiven if you didn’t know that the Brits played hockey not only in the grass but also proper hockey, on the ice. This was their first time competing with the big boys, having gained promotion recently. Before the game, I shared a few beers with some of the Brit fans from around the island. They were there to have a great time and some told me that they would be happy just to score a goal or two, already resigning themselves to being relegated at the end of the tournament. They had lost the other day to the Germans but scored a goal, so to them that was a victory. This time however it was different. A very ruthless Danish team embarrassed them scoring nine goals and giving up none. Still, the fans were just happy to be there.

The following day the weather had changed drastically. The fan zone was closed due to high winds and it was just too cold and wet to wander the cobbled streets of Kosice, so I found a comfortable café and more Brits. My final game was the USA against the British.

We talked hockey for a couple hours before fighting the elements on the way to the arena.

It should be a foregone conclusion that the Americans won but our opponents were very impressive. They scored three times again Team USA who were not at their best. In the end however, normality was restored and the Americans won 6-3. The fact that they could score against a bunch of NHL players (most of the British play in the UK) obviously gave them confidence because their last game was against the French and they won, managing not to be relegated.

I managed to catch a second division football game on one of my non-hockey

days. The team from the town of Lipany was battling to stay in the second division and were hosting Šamorín, who are a very decent team. I wasn’t even sure if a victory for the home town team would secure their status for next season but in the end it didn’t matter as they lost 3-1.

Like many teams in Slovakia and smaller footballing nations, this stadium wasn’t exactly a stadium but a big-ish tribune on one side and nothing on the other three. It seemed that the whole town (or is it a village) came out for the game. It seemed more of a place for the locals to socialize with a few beers and sausages, than to be overly concerned about how their team was doing on the field of battle.

A week after returning to Belgium, I was off again, this time to Estonia. Although I was there for a conference, I did manage to find a football game. From Tartu, four of us packed Epp’s car and drove to the picturesque town of Viljandi. The town is best known for its annual music festival and not really for its football, although they are in the Meistriliiga, the top flight.

Not unusual in Estonia I was told, the weather wasn’t great. The rain came down for a while, took a break and then started again. When we arrived, we had about an hour before kick-off, so headed into town searching for food. The town was a very charming one, so it was nice

to walk up the hill from the football stadium (again, not a stadium) on the lake and have a look around although we didn’t manage to eat. Back down the hill and into the grounds, we found a little wagon that sold refreshments. A beer and a couple hot dogs later, I was set for some football.

JK Viljandi Tulevik was hosting a team nestled up on the Russian border

– FC Narva Trans. When the game started I could hear some of the players communicating in English and one of them with a very distinct American accent. Turns out that Narva’s striker is from St. Louis, Missouri. He didn’t score but Viljandi did. Actually they scored twice but unfortunately for them, the second one was an own goal. The game ended one goal apiece.

Back to the hockey; I did manage to watch the final in a hotel lobby with a couple of overjoyed Finnish colleagues. Finland and Canada contested the final that the Canadians were supposed to win. Well nobody told the Finnish that and they ended up with the trophy and the gold medals.

So now I’m back in Belgium where I plan to rest up before heading south of the border to some of the Women’s World Cup games. By the time you read this, the tournament will be underway.

Chilling in the fan zone.

Chilling in the fan zone.

With a number of SICC riders having knocked off the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix rides as detailed

in the May issue, on 27 April, a large group of SICC riders got together to tackle the Liege-Bastogne-Liege Challenge: in fact, SICC likely made up the largest single club presence that day. Unlike the prior two events, this one is on smooth roads, which makes for a comfortable, faster ride, at least in theory. After last year’s event, which took place in summer-like warmth and sunny conditions that made for an exceptionally nice day out, this year’s event took place in miserable conditions, with temperatures between 5-9C in constant rain and occasional hail that made for sub-zero wind-chill conditions when flying down the long descents. The course takes riders through the beautiful woods and farmlands of the Ardennes highlands, past meadows that could be mistaken for being in the Alps, through the picturesque Ourthe and Ambleve river valleys, and through towns and villages that have changed little in many decades, if not a century or two, albeit in some areas with reminders of the brutal combat that took place there in the spring of 1940 and the winter of 1944. Of course, this assumes you can actually see the scenery through the rain and spray, which wasn’t much the case this year. Weather aside, the challenges come in the form of its many climbs, some 2700 meters of climbing over the 147km distance that, in light

of the dreadful conditions, only some seven SICC riders covered, while the rest tackled the 75km distance. And the climbs in the Ardennes, not far from the German border (where this area is known as the Eifel mountains), are multi-kilometer long affairs, with most including stretches with gradients well into double-digits (as high as 17% for a few hundred meters in one case). Taking on these climbs is completely different from those in Flanders: the climbs of the Ardennes require solid pacing, a high power-weight ratio, and extended power delivery as opposed to punchy, explosive efforts required to get over the short, super-steep cobbled “hellingen.” Moreover, the constantly undulating nature of the course means there is no flat stretch to relax. In sum, you are either pushing hard for several kilometers, sometimes on very steep sections, and then descending on smooth but narrow roads that require your full concentration and technical acumen – especially in the wet and when shivering from the cold. And since this over a race course where the general idea is to make it as “challenging” (aka, difficult) as possible so that the winner is worthy of the title, the hardest climbs are all in the last 70km of the course, some

six in all on a saw-tooth course profile before the finishing descent into Liege, meaning that the most demanding bits come after everyone has already ridden for several hours and put in considerable effort. So if this course doesn’t batter our bikes and bodies and allows us to ride with lighter, faster equipment, its relentless nature makes it viewed by many as cycling’s true test of one’s physical stamina – and with this year’s weather, an even truer test of mental fortitude and stoic perseverance.

Successfully completing these events results in tremendous levels of self-satisfaction, as well as a good bit of admiration and wonder at those who race these courses as professionals. With most cyclists today benefitting from heart-rate monitors, power meters, and GPS enabled computers that provide instantaneous data – as well as apps that track progress over certain sectors and whose results are searchable on their sites, it’s awe-inspiring to compare our own efforts with those racing it the next day, demonstrating (if there ever was a doubt) the fact that professional cyclists, men and women, are among the most aerobically fit athletes on the planet on one hand, and just how wide that gulf is between good recreational cyclists and dedicated racers on the other. For most of SICC’s members, who are –as one might say around here – “d’un certain age” and who have full professional and social lives as well, we can all take satisfaction in knowing that our riding data unequivocally demonstrates that our sport has made us quite fit- and that with training, we are getting in ever better shape.

And that’s really the beauty of it: SICC members cover all sorts of terrain and have an opportunity, through this sport, to see and sense some of the world’s most beautiful locations in ways few others can. The wide variety of roads and scenery, as exemplified in the three Monuments close to Mons, provides different sets of challenges to master, from requiring not just a good level of fitness to

Page 50: SCL - SHAPE2DAY€¦ · SHAPE Morale & Welfare Branch SCL Editor’s Letter Officer-in-Charge María José Tezanos Bustamante (ESP - Civ) 065/44.2221 * maria.tezanos@shape.nato.int

do so somewhat comfortably but a high level of concentration, confidence, and skill. Climbing, descending, cornering, pacing, fueling, all require practice and technique: safely and enjoyably covering long distances is infinitely more than the ability to simply turn your bike’s pedals. And as the days turn longer and (hopefully warmer), SICC members will be riding the many events organized on weekends, from local ones to the Proximus Challenge rides that showcase the more unknown areas of Belgium to participating in more competitive events in France and Italy. And while future articles will address SICC’s adventures, it’s worth noting that a large group of SICC riders took on the Mons-Chimay-Mons event held on 01 May, and thus just four days after Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Mons-Chimay-Mons is not a race but rather a series of rides, from 60 to 220 kms put together by the local Mons cycling club, courses that take riders south to the strategic town of Beaumont and into the Avenois region of NE France and on to Chimay for those with the fortitude to do the longer rides. With cool, dry weather, some 20 SICC members tackled the various distances, enjoying the beautiful scenery in one of the less-populated areas of Western Europe, happily refueling at the well-stocked-up rest stops every 40km or so, and muttering unhappy comments at the

organizers’ penchant for seeking small cobbled roads that could easily have been bypassed using smoother ones… And for being in what is nominally a flat part of the world, it came as a surprise to many just how hilly the area just south of Mons can be: those who rode the 160km loop climbed over 1500 meters of elevation over the course of the day. For one of SICC’s members, completing that loop, which comes out to 100 miles, was a first, a real achievement as a “century” is an iconic distance for those in the English-speaking world, akin to successfully completing a marathon. And just as you never forget your first Belgian beer or first completed marathon, you don’t forget your first “century” ride.

SICC is open to SHAPE personnel and their families interested in or involved in road cycling. Those interested in riding with the club are invited for an introductory ride, which takes place on Wednesdays from the main gym at 1800. A road captain leads that day a flat 40-45km loop through the countryside west of Mons, at a 25kmh (or slightly more, depending on the riders’ fitness) pace. Emphasis is placed on riding etiquette and pack-riding technique, and these rides also serve newer riders to get some informal coaching and advice/tips. SICC members otherwise have several occasions during the week to ride together: the club holds a short, informal social ride on Monday evenings; a flat 50km loop on Tuesdays that is covered at a 28-32kmh pace, and an undulating 55km loop on Thursdays that includes a few sectors taken flat out. The club also offers at times a separate ride on Thursdays over a course that includes several short climbs on a 7km loop to do interval training, with members riding multiple loops based on their fitness level and ambitions. So, if you have just arrived – or are arriving – at SHAPE and are an active recreational cyclist, come join us. And if you are new to the sport, contact us directly at shapecycling.com and find out what it takes to join the fun!

The International Jewish Center offers a weekly educational program in English for children from 10:00am - 12:30pm. This is a great opportunity to meet and befriend other international Jewish children and families. We introduce students to Hebrew, prayer, religious traditions, and the modern Jewish experience. We begin with a Tots class for children from 3 years, and we provide Jewish education through Bar/Bat Mitzvah with an emphasis on creative expression. The school is led by our Israeli Head Teacher and our American Rabbi and staffed by dedicated and experienced teachers. Please contact:
