Chers Amis,

As winter comes to New York, the next three months at FIAF will be warmer than ever! I am thrilled to announce that Jane Birkin will return to us in February for two nights of song, as only she can deliver. We are also pleased to present, in partnership with the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Anthology Film Archives, and the Baryshnikov Arts Center, In the Words of Duras, a four-week, multi-venue series of events devoted to the provocative words and works of the great Marguerite Duras. Our popular series of Fashion Talks returns, this time focusing entirely on male designers. And once again, we will embark upon our very successful Wine Tour de France. Finally, the FIAF Gallery presents a season organized around the whimsical theme of “Rock, Paper, Scissors!” Don’t miss the current “Rock” exhibition, The Great Masters of Lithography, which has been extended through Friday, January 22 due to popular demand. A series of Talks will further illuminate this playful theme. I hope that you will come “play with us” this winter at FIAF.

Meet the Writer... en français !Jean VallierThursday, February 18 at 5pm

Duras biographer and former director of the French Institute Alliance Française, Jean Vallier returns to FIAF to speak about the life and legacy of Marguerite Duras. In this special French-language talk, Vallier will give fascinating insight into his writing process and work as the great author’s biographer.

Jean Vallier's first of two projected volumes about Marguerite Duras is a wonderfully detailed and accurate biography of a womanfamous for turning her own life into myth.—Edmund White, The New York Review of Books, October 23, 2008

Talk with Jean Vallier:Bringing Duras’s Word to the Stage Thursday, February 18 at 7pm

In English, Jean Vallier will discuss Duras’s work as a playwright and director, and explore the question: How can Duras’s “word” be best brought to life for today’s audiences?

A true expert, Vallier knew Duras personally and has written two books about the legendary writer, both published in 2006: Marguerite Duras, la vie comme un roman (Editions Textuel, Albums Passion); and C’était Marguerite Duras, 1914–1945 (Editions Fayard), the first of a two-volume biography. The second volume covering the latter half of her life (1946–1996) will be published in February 2010.

Known for her evocative and experimental style, Marguerite Duras is one of France’s great writers. At times controversial and always deeply fascinating, she revolutionized the form of the novel in the twentieth century with her expressive, free-flowing style. And while she moved freely between media, including theater and film, appreciation for her work on stage and screen is deeply rooted in the power of her words.

This winter, FIAF and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy present, inconjunction with Anthology Film Archives and the Baryshnikov Arts Center, a four-week, multi-venue series dedicated to the provocative works and words of this great artist. The series brings renowned, innovative French artists and directors to the U.S. as they bring the words of Duras to the stage and screen.

Astrid BasDiptych: The Lover and La Musica Deuxième Friday and Saturday, February 26 & 27 at 7pm

The Lover is directed and performed by Astrid Bas with music by Ami Flammer. La Musica Deuxième is performed by Astrid Bas and Daniel Pettrow.

A unique theatrical event, this program pairs a staged, set-to-music adaptation of Duras’s prize-winning novel The Lover (1984), with Duras’s play, La Musica Deuxième (1985).

The Lover, a recipient of the Goncourt prize, is an autobiographical work. It evokes Duras’s childhood in Vietnam, recounting a teenager’s scandalous affair with a rich, older Chinese businessman. In this adaptation, director and actress Bas collaborates with Flammer, a composer and violinist, who has previously scored some of Duras’s films. Bas and Flammer use their respective instruments—voice for Bas and music for Flammer—to create a transporting performance.

The second piece, La Musica Deuxième, tells the story of a man and woman who reunite three years after they have separated, to finalize their divorce. Though they have begun new lives, their history and a shared nostalgia lead them to each other. Through conversation they reconstruct their past, revealing misunderstandings and betrayals. Conceived by Bas, this bilingual presentation features brilliant performances by Bas and the Wooster Group’s Daniel Pettrow, and has been well received by American audiences.

Special thanks to the Délégation généralede l’Alliance Française.

Parisian stage director Brook presents a work featuring a diverse ensemble of female performers including Joan Juliet Buck and Nicole Ansari. Inspired by La Vie Matérielle, Duras’s collection of essays on daily life, and Virgina Woolf ’s A Room of One’s Own, this evening promises to be more of a festive gathering of talents than a classic reading; an experience of sharing these authors’ extraordinary words while cooking, laughing, crying, singing, and dancing together in an imaginary and theatrical kitchen.

Brook, daughter of director Peter Brook and actress Natasha Parry, has directed theater and opera productions throughout Europe. Her Paris-based theater company, Compagnie Irina Brook, is currently on tour with four different productions. Brook is a recipient of the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

ExhibitionGreat Masters of LithographyFriday, November 6–Friday, January 22

FIAF is pleased to extend the successful Great Masters of Lithography exhibition. In the early twentieth century, celebrated artists including Calder, Chagall, Dufy, Léger, Matisse, Miró, and Picasso, rediscovered the technique of lithography thanks to the Atelier Mourlot, a Parisian printshop founded in 1852 by the Mourlot family. Originally specializing in printing wallpaper, the printshop became a lithographic workshop under the leadershipof the founder’s grandson, Fernand. He invited leading artists to learn the complexities of lithography, the first fundamentally new printing technology since the invention of relief printing in the fifteenth century.

Lithography revolutionized the printing world by enabling artists to work with traditional materials using classic techniques to create prints that rivaled the quality of an original painting. In the Atelier Mourlot, elite twentieth-century artists drew directly on specially prepared lithographic stones to create artworks that were then produced under the direction of master printers. The combined genius of modern artist and master printer gave rise to unique and visually striking lithographs that appeared only as limited editions.

FIAF presents an exhibition reflecting the art world’s new interest in paper as a creative medium. Acclaimed French artist Odon’s thrilling, luminous spiral paper works employ this traditional material in a revolutionary and beautiful way.

Early in his career, Odon’s intensely personal and mysterious images were inspired by the Cobra movement (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam), a group of expressionist painters interested in freedom of color and form. In the 1970s Odon began experimenting with the inclusion of cut and woven modifications on the surfaces of his paintings. By the late 1970s this had evolved into an increasingly complex process of cutting, shredding, and braiding paper, painted by him on both sides, into never-ending, sunburst-like forms that he calls mandalas. The ancient form of the mandala, meaning circle in Sanskrit, is a common symbol of sacred power in many cultures, representing a cosmic diagram viewed from the human perspective.

Odon’s works are dream-like meditations on the order of the world. The artist works slowly, weaving the flat, meticulously painted paper into magical endless webs. Through these circular sculptures, Odon presents the infinite in finite form and alludes to the natural energy and tension of circular motion. The resulting works are both spectacular and thought provoking.

Talk The Silhouette World of Béatrice CoronWednesday, March 24 at 7pm

Meet acclaimed French artist Béatrice Coron, who will talk about the silhouette worlds she invents, cutting them into existence from single sheets of paper. Coron, a self-taught paper-cutter, first became familiar with cutting techniques in her native France, developing her interest and skill further while living in China. Her hand-cut compositions, often populated with hundreds of carefully crafted figures, appear to burst with activity and life.

Now based in New York, Coron’s work has been well received and is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. She has received several public art commissions including New York’s and Chicago’s respective Transit Authorities. In an evening of conversation, this innovative artist will share the stories behind her works. Her work can be seen until April 4 in Slash: Paper Under the Knife at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design.Visit mad.org for more info.

Screening and Conversation with Hugues de MontalembertThursday, January, 28 at 6:30pm

Gary Tarns, 2005. Color. 75 min.

De Montalembert, who was blinded duringan attack in New York City in 1978, presents a screening of Black Sun, the award-winning documentary. He will also introduce his new memoir, Invisible, published by ATRIA Books. As documented in Black Sun, de Montalembert faced crushing despair in the year after losing his sight; but then he did the unthinkable by learning to “see” without the use of his eyes.

The meditation on his loss is explored in his latest book, Invisible. In this memoir, the author reflects on the thirty years since he lost his sight. Without a trace of self-pity, he writes about how the loss of this vital sense invigorated him, leading him to take solo trips around the world and giving him a new appreciation of life.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A session, reception, and book signing with the author himself.

Meet the Writer… en français ! Jean VallierThursday, February 18 at 5pm

Jean Vallier, biographer of Marguerite Duras and former director of FIAF, was a personal friend of Duras. He has dedicated over ten years to investigating and chronicling her life. He wrote two books about the legendary author, both published in 2006: Marguerite Duras, la vie comme un roman (Editions Textuel, Albums Passion); and C’était Marguerite Duras, 1914–1945 (Editions Fayard), the first of a two-volume biography of Duras. The second volume covering the latter half of her life (1946–1996) will be published in February 2010.

In this discussion, the author will speak in French about his work and writing process, addressing specifically his role as a biographer. This program is offered in conjunction with Vallier’s appearance at FIAF as part of the In the Words of Duras series (see page 5 for details), and the Language Center’s courses on Duras’s works (see page 39 for details).

Moderated by FIAF instructor Béatrice Puja.

Cyrano de Bergerac Thursday, February 4 at 10:30amThe definitive film version of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac tale, this modern masterpiece takes viewers on a humorous yet touching adventure.

Four Bags Full Thursday, March 18 at 10:30am Released in 1956, this well-known comedic melodrama directed by Claude Autant-Lara is about the challenges two men encounter when they embark on a furtive caper across World War II Paris to deliver black-market meat by night.

Cyrano de BergeracJean-Paul Rappeneau, 1990. Color. 137 min. With Gérard Depardieu, Anne Brochet, Vincent Perez, Jacques Weber

A popular officer and romantic poet known for his rapier-wit, Cyrano (Depardieu) falls in love from afar with his cousin Roxane (Brochet). Cursed by an impossibly large nose, Cyrano despairs of any hope of winning the maiden’s heart. As a consolation, he offers to help Christian, a fellow officer who also has feelings for Roxane but lacks wit and eloquence, win her by writing passionate love letters on his behalf. Roxane falls for the letters, but believing them to be written by Christian, confusion and hilarity ensues. Depardieu won a Best Actor César for his portrayal of Cyrano.

La traversée de ParisClaude Autant-Lara, 1956. B&W. 80 min. With Jean Gabin, Bourvil, Jeanette Batti,Louis de Funès

Autant-Lara brings two great comic actors together for this well-written and genuinely funny film. Two men, a painter and a poor man, must cross deserted World War II Paris under cover of night to deliver black-market meat. As they walk the empty streets, they encounter a variety of obstacles, before finally running into a squad of German police. An unusual film that alludes to the sinister danger of the time through humor, Four Bags Full is a true tour-de-force that is sure to surpass the audience’s expectations.

Each year, FIAF presents the Young Audience Program—an active education outreach initiative. This program offers school groups the opportunity to attend educational and entertaining events selected for their artistic excellence and their connection with French and Francophone cultures.
