Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) Italian Scientist

Used the telescope to prove Copernicus’ theory.

Church banned his book.

Who Influenced Galileo?

Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) was the first person to state that the sun was in the center of the universe.

Went against what the Church taught.

HELIOCENTRIC: The sun is in the center of the universe.

Ptolemy says “No way, Jose!”

Ptolemy lived 1500 years before Galileo.

The Church said that he was right in his theory (thoughts) that the Earth is in the center of the universe.

GEOCENTRIC: Earth is in the center of the universe.

The Church even put Galileo on trialfor supporting the belief that the planets

revolved around the sun!
