The Pearson Archive

The Pearson firm was founded by Samuel Pearson as builders and

contractors, at Bradford, Yorkshire in 1856.

It established its reputation in the 1880s under Weetman

Pearson, later created the first Viscount Cowdray. Pearson’s

civil engineering works included the Sheffield main sewer, the

docks at Halifax, Nova Scotia and the Empress Dock at

Southampton. During the 1890s the firm became the largest

contractor in the world. It constructed the Blackwell Tunnel,

Dover Harbour, Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile and the

reconstruction of the Tehuantepec Railway in Mexico amongst

many other major engineering works.

The archive contains contracts, specifications, agreements,

correspondence, reports, accounts, notebooks and photographs

relating to the firm’s civil engineering work throughout the

world. They also include the first Lord Cowdray’s working

papers and papers relating to the firm’s subsidiary interests

in publishing and aviation.

The records were deposited with the Science Museum Library &

Archive by S. Pearson and Son Ltd. in 1972.
