Lesson 1

Learning objective: I can name and identify a range of animals.

This lesson is to introduce the topic of animals to your child and for them to get excited about their topic. We had originally planned to visit Chester Zoo. However, as that is not possible, we would like you to allow your child to explore the live webcam at Edinburgh zoo found at www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/webcams/ and complete the tasks below.

Learning objective: I can compare, sort and group different animals.

PRACTICAL ACTIVITY - Look at the different animals on the following page (Resource 1). Can you cut them out and sort them into these categories?

Has wings, doesn’t have wings. Has fur, doesn’t have fur. Eats meat, eats plants. Has four legs, has less than four legs. Lives under water, lives on the ground.

DISCUSSION - Were there any you found difficult to sort? Why? Discuss this with your grown up

CHALLENGE: Can you think of you another way to sort and classify these animals?

DISCUSSION - Senses are really important for a range of different animals to survive in the wild. Can you infer why you think these animal’s senses are so important to their survival? Discuss your answers with your grown up.
