Series Description
This EduSystem’s Science K-6 series was developed based on the curricular design Puerto Rico Core Standards and the Curriculum Framework created by the Department of Education of Puerto Rico. Additionally, the content has been enriched with curricular frameworks developed by other educational entities and private schools.
This series presents the content in a dynamic, stimulating, innovative and recreational manner. The series gives the students the opportunity to build their knowledge through the cognitive development of scientific concepts, principles, and laws. The series also encourages the study of this discipline by putting scientific research, science skills, and the scientific method within the student’s reach.
Conceptual FrameworkThe design and conceptualization of K-6 series is founded upon the following basic principles:
1 . The need for emphasis on:
b Encouraging students to think logically and analytically to develop reasoning and interpretive skills used for problem solving during the learning process.
b Learning science by “doing science” through the completion of various activities, experiments, and scientific inquiry.
b Promoting curricular integration and the application of scientific concepts to real life situations.
b Systematically organizing the learning process (in sequence, going from the con-crete to the abstract).
b Encouraging the development of multiple talents and the opportunity to express them in different ways.
b Promoting the development of concepts, principles, laws, scientific processes, and related skills.
b Providing strategies to address the individuality of each student.
2 . The activities integrate a constructivist approach by encouraging more student participa-tion in the building of knowledge and the development of skills.
3
General Objectives
The objectives of this Series are to:
b Promote learning through real life experiences.
b Encourage the use of information technology as a learning tool.
b Educate students on the protection and conservation of the environment.
b Promote reflection and self-evaluation during the learning process.
b Promotes experiences for the development and appreciation of science and the world around us.
b Integrate the different scientific disciplines, such as chemistry, physics, and biology, among others with disciplines from other fields.
b Encourage participation in scientific inquiry and the development of concepts, skills and scientific processes.
b Integrate standards and grade level expectations.
b Provide situations, activities, and exercises to actively build and apply knowledge to different situations.
b Encourage students to work with both concrete and abstract concepts.
b Contribute to the development of language as a means of individual and collective communication while incorporation of scientific vocabulary.
b Enrich the lessons with level appropriate documents, activities, and exercises.
b Highlight the scientific environment in accordance with grade level.

Course StructureThe course Science K is composed of seven units. Each unit is composed of lessons. Each lesson is divided into sections that develop their individual topics. Each lesson contains a descriptive log, activities, worksheets and handouts that are related to the content and, as in most cases, website links and resources. It also proposes assessment exercises in order to help the students in different tasks.
Here are some of the sections usually found in each lesson’s presentation and documents.
Lesson SectionsSections of concept development where topics are explored using day to day experiences. The lessons contain images that incite conversation as well as question and answer dialogue to in-crease curiosity for all the different topics to be studied.
Unit DocumentsVaried, fun activities which will help the stu-dent better understand the topics studied. There are coloring, writing, and cutting exer-cises as well as games and manipulatives re-lated to the topics in this lesson. Throughout the activities, the instructor can identify if the students have mastered the skills developed in the lesson.
5
Connect to What You Have LearnedInformation that students can apply to daily life. It will also help them understand what they study in class.
Link to . . .In this section, students will be able to relate a topic to other areas of science.
ThinkQuestions that help students reason and express their opinions about the topic presented in the Link to… section.
Icons
Each of the sections in our lessons is identified with an icon. These help both the student and the teacher compliment their ideas and activities. Be-low, you will find the icon next to a description of its function.
Challenge Your MindAn exercise or situation in which students will be prompted to think critically.
Scientists in ActionA variety of activities for evaluation in which students will have the opportunity to express themselves and investigate a topic from the lesson.
