Why Science is so important...
• The UK needs to increase by as much as 50% the number of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) graduates it is creating (BBC article 30 Sept 2012).
• Most children have already decided whether Science is something they want to carry on by the age of 10 (King’s College London 2012).
Vision Statement for Science
At Cage Green Primary School, we want all children to have curiosity and understanding of the world we live in. To have the skills to question, to investigate and explain. To be confident young people who impact the world, leaving it better for future generations.
Science Policy
• Developed with Andrew Berry (Kent Advisor for Science)
• New curriculum ready – implemented since January 2014
• Located on school website

questions• Ability to split units• Role of outdoor education – Cage Green Grounds
Committee• Year 2 and Year 6 working to incorporate
previous scheme units to avoid gaps in learning• Investigative approach – applied across Sciences• Develop enthusiasm in preparation for Secondary
How we teach Science in school

• Practical opportunities to explore and ask questions
• Enjoyment!• Large investment in resources and promoting
Science
How we teach Science in school
• Question children in order to develop higher order thinking skills
• Opportunity to record and explain findings• Differentiation runs throughout the process• Full recording of experiments Upper Key Stage
2 (Year 5 and Year 6 expectation)
Science at home
