What does Science at BSJ look like? What does Science at BSJ look like?

• It takes place in every year group, around the year, depending on the IPC Unit

• It happens in blocks – this means it is not timetabled as a separate subject to be done once a week

• It is skills based learning – Not just focused on knowledge. Without the two you cannot create real understanding.

I understand that a country may have many cities, but only one city in a country is the capital.

The capital of Austria is Vienna

• I can use an atlas to quickly locate Austria via the index pages.

• I can use the map key to determine which city in Austria is the capital.

We often start with a question. We often start with a question. You have two eggs (A and B). One of those eggs is hard boiled and one is raw. You have to identify which one is the boiled one without smashing it? Good luck!!

(One of you will at the end of the activity crack the egg above your head to find who was right)

Hard Boiled Raw

Science in class – How do we teach itScience in class – How do we teach it

Here’s what you do:1. Place the egg in question on a flat surface.

2. Grip it between you thumb and fingertips and then gently spin it.3. While the egg is spinning, touch the egg lightly enough to make it stop spinning

but then lift your finger off.4. If the egg is boiled, it will stay in place.  If the egg is raw, it will amazingly start

spinning again. So what in the world is going on?

Egg Physics - This is a perfect example of inertia and Newton’s Law of Motion which states that a body in motion will stay in motion until acted upon by another

force.

The egg shell and its content are spinning along together.  When you stop the egg from spinning, you stop the egg shell from moving but the inside of the raw egg is liquid and just keeps spinning around.  Eventually the friction of the egg shell will

slowly stop the liquid center from spinning and the egg will come to rest.

Inside the hard boiled egg, the mass is solid.  When the egg shell stops, the center of the egg can not move anywhere so it is forced to stop with the egg shell.

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion,

including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to

keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity.

In physics, the tendency for objects at rest to remain at rest, and for objects in uniform motion to continue in motion in a straight line, unless acted on by an outside force. (See Newton's laws of motion.)

Definition

The amount of inertia that an object possesses is proportional to its mass . However, inertia is not the same thing as mass or momentum (the product of velocity and mass). The mass of an object can be measured by observing the extent of its inertia. This is done by measuring the amount of force required to produce a certain acceleration.

The property of inertia is useful in navigation systems. A massive object can provide a constant reference for acceleration, and in particular, changes in direction, because it tends to maintain a constant orientation in space. Inertial guidance systems are used in aircraft, spacecraft, oceangoing vessels, and missiles.

How do we know we are covering enough Science? Answer: IPC Route Planner

IPC - Route PlannerIPC - Route Planner

Any year groups who might miss any science aspects or knowledge content, then we ensure that these areas are covered by:

•Teaching special science based IPC units•Specific Investigation Tasks•Extending units•Science Days•Knowledge Quizzes

Science CoverageScience Coverage

In Science, we’ll be finding out:•That we need light in order to see•How human teeth compare to animal teeth•How our body uses food and water•How our heart works to keep us alive•All about skeletons and muscles•About the human life cycle•Why exercise is good for us•How tobacco and alcohol harm the body•Which foods keep us healthy and why

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:•How to plan and prepare a healthy meal

In International, we’ll be finding out:•About people’s health problems
