4. Logic – deals with reasoning
Two types of reasoning:
a. Deductive reasoning – thinking proceeds from
the most general concepts to the most specific examples.
b. Inductive reasoning – thinking proceeds from
the most specific examples to the most general concepts and attitudes possessed
by an individual or group

Perennialism
What should be taught?The universal truths.
The primary goal of school is for students to
learn what others have created and to use thisknowledge in their lives.
Who should decide what should be taught?
Society at large makes these decisions because it
is society that has validated the importance of
these works over time and has continued to hold
these classics in high esteem.

Material: Paideia program(1)didactic teaching in which the teacher lectures(10%-15% of the
time), (2) Socratic seminars in which the teacher uses directedquestioning to help students arrive at desirable answers (15%-20% of
the time), and(3) coaching in which the teacher coaches students in
the academic subjects (60% to 70% of the time).
Why should this material be taught?The perrenialist believes the primary goal of
school is for students to learn what others have
created and to use this knowledge in their ownlives.

understanding students should master.

To the progressivist, the purpose of
education is to prepare students to be
lifelong learner in an ever-changing society.
What should be taught?
Progressivists focus the curriculum on the
needs of students. These need include
academic , social, and physical needs and
are fueled by the interest of students.
