The!University!of!Brighton!is!a!community!of!over!21,000!students!and!2,100!staff!based!on!five!campuses!along!the!

coast!from!Brighton!via!Moulsecoomb,!Falmer!and!Eastbourne!to!Hastings.!The!current!School!of!Health!Sciences!has!

expanded! steadily! since! 1990! when! the! Department! of! Physiotherapy! was! founded.! In! August! 1998,! the! School! of!

Health!Professions!was!formed,!then!in!January!2014!the!School!of!Health!Professions!and!the!School!of!Nursing!and!

Midwifery! merged! to! form! the! new! School! of! Health! Sciences.! You! can! read! more! about! the! School! on!

has! a! strong! research! culture,! and! supports! research! activities! for! staff!members! as!well! as! research! students.! This!

The!Physiotherapy!programmes!are!housed!in!Eastbourne!Meads!area!on!the!Darley!Road!in!the!Robert!Dodd!Building!

and!the!Centre!for!Health!Research!(CHR),!is!in!the!Aldro!Building!on!the!same!site.!Podiatry!and!Physiotherapy!clinics!

are!based!at!the!Leaf!Hospital!in!Eastbourne!town!centre,!approximately!2!miles!away.!

1.1&Overview&of&Programmes&&

The! nature! of! service! provision! has! altered! over! time! in! response! to! changes! in! health! and! social! care! policy! and!

environmental!developments.!There! is!a!need!for!health!practitioners!to!be!flexible!and!open!to!changes! in!practice,!

but!also!an!increasing!need!for!graduates!of!physiotherapy!programmes!to!be!independent!practitioners!early!in!their!

careers.! The!new!way! in!which! the!Health! and!Care! Professions! Council! (HCPC)!monitor! registered!physiotherapists!

means! that! graduates! need! to! have! skills! in! the! areas! of! reflection,! portfolio! development! and! an! ability! to! selfC

evaluate!to!an!even!greater!extent!than!before.!!

2.&Course&details&and&curriculum!

The!MSc/PgDip!in!Rehabilitation!Science!(Physiotherapy)!course!is!an!innovative,!twoC!year!accelerated!programme!for!

students!who!hold!a! first!degree! in!a! related! subject.!The!MSc!Rehabilitation! science!programme! follows!a!problem!

based! learning!approach!which!fosters!and!encourages! independent!selfCdirected! learners.! ! It! invites!students!to!use!

their!prior!knowledge!and!skills!to!develop!their!learning!in!physiotherapy!and!facilitates!independent!student!centred!

and! student! directed! learning.! The! University! of! Brighton! PBL! Directory! defines! PBL! as! “a! system! of! teaching! and!

learning!where,!without!prior!preparation,!small!groups!of!students!consider!an!unfamiliar!situation,!problem,!or!task”.!

The! students! start!with! two! generic! physiotherapy!modules!where! the! core! knowledge! and! skills! to! fit! the! current!

health! care! system! in! a!wider! sense! and! are! focused! on! for! example! assessment! of! healthCrelated! fitness,! physical!

activity! and! exercise! in! health,! prevention! and! rehabilitation,! patients’! pathways,! goals! and! progression! throughout!

illness,!injury!and!return!to!health,!realistic!goal!settings!and!how!to!achieve!these.!The!first!practice!placement!takes!

place! after! the! two! first!modules! in! the! first! year.! This! helps! the! students! to! fully! benefit! from! the! PBL! approach,!

getting! involved! in! professional! practice! early! and! integrating! their! prior! and! physiotherapy! learning! in! real! life!

situations.!This!placement!(PT645)!is!assessed!at!a!satisfactory/unsatisfactory!level!and!we!encourage!students!to!work!

as!part!of!the!team!establishing!the!basics!of!practice!without!the!pressure!of!clinical!reasoning.!Following!their! first!

placement,! the! students! study! further! three! academic! modules! focussing! on! neurology,! cardioCrespiratory! and!

musculoskeletal!case!studies.!!This!is!followed!by!4!further!placements!at!level!6.!!The!final!placement!is!scheduled!at!

the!end!of!the!course,!so!that!the!students!finish!the!course!with!their!placement!experience!and!are!ready!to!start!as!a!

physiotherapist!after!registration.!

The!BSc!(Hons)!Physiotherapy!programme!is!a!3Cyear!course.!Year!1!of!the!Course!has!been!designed!to!introduce!the!

student!to!what!it!means!to!be!a!Physiotherapist!as!a!professional;!it!focuses!on!some!of!the!core!behaviours,!beliefs!

and!values!on!which!we!base!our!practice.!They!also!study! the!key!underpinning!knowledge!of!anatomy,!physiology!

and!pathophysiology.!A!range!of!Physiotherapy!skills!are!also!introduced!in!year!1,!e.g.!specific!treatment!skills!such!as!

exercise!prescription,!hot!and!cold!therapy!and!use!of!mobility!aids.!We!also!consider!the!role!of!the!Physiotherapist!in!

Health!Promotion! and! introduce! the!pathology! and!management!of!musculoskeletal! conditions.! ! An! introduction! to!

health!psychology!and!health!related!behaviour!will!enable!them!to!take!a!wider!view!when!considering!their!role!as!

physiotherapists.!It!is!very!important!for!them!to!get!experience!with!people!early!in!the!course,!and!during!semester!2!

they! undertake! some! regular! work! experience! with! a! voluntary! organisation,! which! will! be! arranged! through! the!

University.!!This!will!enable!their!development!of!interpersonal!skills,!confidence!and!learning!in!the!realCworld!setting.!

Three!modules! in! the! core!areas!of!Physiotherapy!practice,!Cardiorespiratory,!Neurology!and!Neuromusculoskeletal,!

are!studied!in!year!2.!These!modules!draw!on!the!foundation!of!year!1!and!introduce!some!specialist!knowledge!and!

skills!in!these!clinical!areas.!In!preparation!for!clinical!practice!their!knowledge!of!Health!Psychology!and!Behaviour!is!

developed!to!focus!on!Communication.!Research!methods!are!introduced!and!they!have!the!opportunity!to!design!and!

undertake!some!smallCscale!investigations.!After!Easter,!the!students!go!out!on!their!first!6Cweek!practice!placement!at!

level!5.!Either!side!of!that!placement! is!a!module!which!gives!the!students!the!opportunity!to!explore!the!context!of!

clinical! practice.! Year! 3! of! the! course! is! dominated! by! the! remaining! 4! practice! placements,! giving! a! range! of!

experiences!in!different!practice!settings.!During!year!3!they!also!undertake!a!research!project.!!In!addition,!there!is!a!

Interprofessional! education! is! considered! critical! to! enable! students! to! communicate! effectively! and! work!

collaboratively!with!other!health!professionals,! respecting!and!valuing! the!opinions!of!colleagues!whilst!promoting!a!

patient! centred! approach! to! health! and! social! care! provision.! ! The! University! organises! a! yearly! interprofessional!

conference! across! physiotherapy,! occupational! therapy,! podiatry,! nursing,! midwifery,! social! work,! pharmacists! and!

medicine.! ! Placements! also! offer! rich! opportunities! for! students! to! learn! and! work! together! and! we! ask! that! you!

explore!the!possibilities!for!this!in!your!clinical!settings.!!!!

2.2&Support&for&Student&Learning&on&Practice&Placements&

Much!time!is!spent!prior!to!students!going!on!placements,!from!the!beginning!of!the!course,!and!via!the!whole!team,!

supporting!and!preparing!the!students!for!clinical!work.!It!is!the!focus!and!underpinning!rationale!of!our!teaching.!This!

preparation! is! both! practical! and! social/! emotional,! through! such! interventions! as! voluntary! working,! case! studies,!

discussion!and!personal!tutor!meetings!to!name!just!a!few.!

The! preparation! over! the! courses! includes! requirements! for! record! keeping! as! a! legal! document,! SOAP! notes,!

mandatory!training,!introduction!to!placement!learning!outcomes,!developing!their!learning!contracts!and!assessment!

of!placement!learning.!!The!students!have!the!opportunity!to!talk!with!the!year!above!prior!to!their!first!placements.!

We!focus!on!using!reflection!to!enhance!their!placement!learning,!and!the!practical!aspects!of!placements,!e.g.!travel!

and! expenses.! In! accordance! with! health! and! safety! requirements! students! must! have! completed! all! mandatory!

During!the!course,!students!complete!5!placements!each!of!six!weeks!duration!that!enable!them!to!gain!experience!in!

following! areas! of! practice,! neuromusculoskeletal,! neurology! and! cardioCrespiratory.! Student! placements! reflect! the!

changing! nature! of! specialisation! in! contemporary! physiotherapy!practice.!Due! to! changes! in!working! environments!

and!practices,! students!may!gain!experience!of!different!areas!of!practice!within!one!placement.! It! is!acknowledged!

that! there! may! be! some! overlap! in! the! kinds! of! experience! between! placements! due! to! both! the! variations! in!

classification!of!specialties!across!the!region!and!the!prevalence!of!some!kinds!of!work.!!Our!placement!allocation!area!

covers!a!wide!geographical!area!that!includes!Kent,!Surrey!and!Sussex.!This!offers!them!a!diverse!social!and!economic!

demographic!with!which!to!engage!and!we!will!give!them!the!opportunity!to!experience!this!diversity!in!their!practice!

The!placement!passport!is!the!students’!first!introduction!to!you.!!They!complete!a!personal!statement!in!which!they!

introduce! themselves,! outlines! their! previous! experience! and! their! hopes! and! aims! for! a! placement! with! you.! The!

passport!also!includes!confirmation!of!their!mandatory!training,!their!immunisations!and!any!additional!learning!needs,!

health!needs!or!disabilities.! !The!students!with!their!personal! tutor!and!their!previous!educators! (if!appropriate)!will!

identify!their!strengths!and!areas!for!development.!We!ask!you!to!review!this!document!and!use!it!to!plan!and!discuss!

the!placement!with!your!student.!Recent!research!into!this!has!identified!it!as!a!useful!tool!for!both!the!educators!and!

In! accordance!with! the! Chartered! Society! of! Physiotherapy! students! are! required! to! complete! a!minimum!of! 1,000!

hours!of!practice!placement!experience.!Students!on!both!the!BSc!(Hons)!Physiotherapy!and!the!MSc!in!Rehabilitation!

Science!are!normally!expected!to!complete!up!to!35!hours!supervised!practice!per!week,!equating!to!210!hours!for!a!

sixCweek!placement.!!These!extra!hours!allow!for!bank!holidays!and!possible!sickness.!!Within!these!hours,!protected!

time! for! reflection! and! presentation! preparation! can! also! be! counted.! These! allowances!will! need! to! be! negotiated!

between! you! and! the! student.! It!may!be! possible! to! have! a! half! day! in! the!working!week;! however,!we!do! tell! the!

students! not! to! expect! one.! ! The! University! sees! a! half! day! away! from! placement! as! supportive! to! the! student’s!

7.1&Identifying&placements&within&your&trust/organisation.&

We!want!our!students!to!experience!the!reality!of!the!diversity!that!now!exists!in!physiotherapy!practice.!!!We!aim!to!

provide!students!with!a!range!of!speciality!experiences!focussing!mainly!on!core!areas!of!neurology,!MSK!and!cardioC

respiratory! but! certainly! not! limited! to! this.! ! We! value! the! learning! opportunities! provided! by! the! nonCtraditional!

environments! and! specialities.! !We! ask! that! you! consider! your! placement! areas! widely,! and!models! of! supervision!

flexible!to!involve!all!members!of!staff!in!providing!students!supervision!and!education.!!In!some!teams!where!practice!

Please!note:!!This!placement!is!designed!to!introduce!the!students!to!the!practice!environment.!!In!

order!to!achieve!this,!students!must!be!given!the!opportunity!to!start!working!alongside!you!in!handling!

patients!and!practising!learned!or!new!skills.!!This!is!not!purely!an!observational!placement.!!The!assessment!of!the!student’s!performance!is!divided!into!two!parts.!

Part!1:!!The!student’s!performance!in!this!section!must!be!satisfactory!in!order!to!pass!the!placement.!Failure!of!
