Schooling in Israelgives global view fortoday and the futureIn August, Pukekohe’sSofiaArthurs-Schoppe, 17, set off to study at the

Eastern Mediterranean International School in Israel. After more than twomonths at the school, she tells us how it has been going.

LOVING LIFE:Pukekohe’s Sofia Arthurs-Schoppe,17, is havingthe time of her life studying at the EasternMediterranean International Schoolin Israel.

I guess no one really knowswhat to expect when they thinkof their future and neither did I,when I applied for internationalboarding school at the beginning of this year.

Since that day I’m convincedmy life has changed forever.

I was lucky enough to receivea scholarship to the EasternMediterranean InternationalSchool (EMIS) in Israel.

It is a new school with the aimof fostering tolerance andacceptance in the youth of theworld.

By being based literally, inthe middle of a conflict zone,EMIS allows students to see thereal-life consequences of conflictthroughout society, while simul-taneously breaking down thebarriers that prejudice builds.

Within this school there areabout 70 students from morethan 35 different countries, including from both Israel andPalestine.

While 70 students may soundlike quite a small school, it actu-ally feels more like a family.

We are constantly togetherfrom the minute I wake up withmy room-mates, to the momentmy head hits the pillow again.

I am surrounded by morelaughter and happiness than Ihave ever seen before. But wework just as hard as we play andevery one of the students is cur-rently working hard, as webegin the two-year InternationalBaccalaureate diploma.

It is an internationallyrecognised qualification thatopens up a world of  opportunities to further mystudies, after I graduate fromEMIS in 2016.

I have now been in Israel fortwo months and it hassurpassed all of my wildestdreams.

The experience of living in aninternational community isbeyond words.

Even the simple feeling of walking to breakfast everymorning down a road lined withpalm trees, listening to thepeacocks sing and surroundedby my friends, all while the sun

is still rising makes me feel likemy life is a movie.

The days when we are luckyenough to leave campus andexplore the nearest town, reminds us how far we’ve trav-elled from our homes. I still getshocked when I realise I can’tread the street signs or themenus, as they’re all written inHebrew.

As I look around at my friendscoming from countries I’ve pre-

viously only read about in books, far off places like Poland,Ecuador, Austria, andLithuania, I remember that any-thing is possible.

If I, an ordinary girl from asmall town in New Zealand, canmove to Israel at 17 years oldand begin to live my life in themost unbelievable way, then Ih ave n o i dea w hat oth ersurprises the future holds for usall.

T hi s t ru ly i s a s ch oo l o f breaking barriers and challeng-ing yourself, while at the sametime, I have never seen theworld as a more inviting place.
