MARCH NEWS FROM THE OFFICE

Thank you to all parents who have been supporting our school community during these winter months by helping with your time and enthusiasm.

Our PTA/SC has been busy working on a number of initiatives including a walk to school program. Please read the insert in this newsletter and complete the on-line survey so we can create a plan that will work for our school based on your input.

Students are reminded to dress appropriately (winter coat, hats and mitts) for the weather and bring spare clothes, like socks if necessary.

We will be implementing a lock up your phone program for students in response to the legislation that was passed in November banning self directed phone usage in schools. Please read the insert with regards to this change for more specifics and feel free to contact Mrs. Shamoon and Ms. Kaufmann if you have any questions about the plan.

We would like to welcome Ms. Cunningham again, this time helping out while Mr. Clark is away and Mr. Weyers for continuing to help teach primary science while Ms. Werner is away on a leave as well.

CELL PHONE POLICY  There has been an increase in unsupervised cell phone use during the school day by our students despite the current school rule of having your personal device off and away during school time. To keep your child(ren) safe, as well as for the safety of others, effective Monday, March 2nd, cell phones will be collected by classroom teachers at the beginning of each day for safe keeping (in a locked cupboard) and will be returned before dismissal. Please note, that as always, students bring their personal devices to school at their own risk. Once this has been implemented, if your child is observed using their phone at school without permission, you will be called to pick up the phone and/or your child. Students will have access to their devices for instructional purposes at the discretion and supervision of their teacher. If your child needs to call home, he/she will be able to use the office phone with permission from their teacher. We thank you in advance for your support as we work to keep your child(ren) safe.

WESTMOUNT PARKING LOT  The Westmount/Vanier parking spaces are for staff. With the recent snowfall, it is becoming more challenging to ensure that students are being collected in the safest way possible. Parent vehicles in the parking lot are creating a congested, unsafe situation. The biggest safety issue is caused when parents/guardians are leaving

vehicles unattended in the bus loop or double parking in the staff lot. In order to make the parking lot safer for everyone, we are implementing the following restrictions: - No parent/guardian vehicles in the bus loop from 8:30 - 9:00 am, and 3:10 –

3:40 pm - Parents/guardians are not to leave unattended vehicles double parked in

the staff parking lot In order to enforce these restrictions, we will be tagging and/or towing vehicles that are double parked or in the bus loop. We encourage parents/guardians to park at the Westmount mall. This will help minimize the congestion in the school parking lot and help keep our students safe. Please pass this information on to anyone who will be involved with the pick up or drop off of your student. Stay tuned for updates regarding our plans to change how we arrive and depart at Westmount. We will be working with community partners to promote more efficient and safe arrival and departure programs. This will be a topic at our upcoming School Council meeting. We would like to thank the Canadian Motorcycle Cruisers (CMC), a riding club for people of all walks of life, for their generous donation of supplies for our Breakfast Program. Thanks to Mrs. MacLean and Mr. Kostyria for continuing to support this program for our families every Tuesday to Friday in the lower foyer before school.

SCHOOL TRAVEL PLAN PROGRAM Our parking lot is an ongoing area of concern during high traffic times and especially during arrival and dismissal. For this reason, the school along with our wonderful School Council have partnered with other community partners to analyze our situation and try to implement a plan to improve the congestion. Volunteers will be out in early March observing traffic flow and tallying information. We will also do a community walk to explore alternative routes or any other areas of concern. Please see below a link to the Family Survey for our School Travel Plan program. The link will remain active until Friday, March 13 th , 2020. Please complete this survey! We want your input in the solution.
