PS196QisTheSchoolwithaHeartandwearecommittedtotheoptimaldevelopmentofeverystudent.Ourschoolcommunity,asawhole,stronglybelievesthatallstudentshavetheopportunitytoachievepersonal,academic,andsocialsuccess.Tothisend,wehavecreatedapositive,safe,andhealth-promotinglearningenvironment.

ThisWellnessPolicyoutlinestheSchool’sapproachtofosteringhealthyenvironmentsandopportunitiesforallstudentsandstaffintheSchool.

TheSchoolwillconveneaWellnessCouncilthatmeetsatleastfourtimesperyeartoestablishgoalsforwellnesspoliciesandprograms,includingdevelopment,implementation,andperiodicreviewandupdateofthisWellnessPolicy.

TheWellnessCouncilmembershipwillinclude,totheextentpossible:parentsandcaregivers,interestedteachersandstaff,representativesoftheschoolnutritionprogram(eg.,schoolfooddirector)

Towardsthatend,ourSchoolofferstheNYCAlternativeLunchMenu.TheAlternativeMenuoffersmoreplant-based,andfewerprocessedfooditemsthantheclassicmenu

TheSchooliscommittedtoofferingschoolmealsthat:

BreakfastToensurethatallchildrenhaveaccesstoahealthybreakfastinordertomeettheirnutritionalneedsandenhancetheirabilitytolearn:• OurSchoolwilloperatetheNYCDOESchoolBreakfastProgram,whichisfreeandopentoall

students• TheSchoolwillnotifyparentsandstudentsoftheavailabilityoftheSchoolBreakfastProgram

WaterTopromotehydration,free,safe,unflavoreddrinkingwaterwillbeavailabletoallstudentsthroughouttheschoolday.TheSchoolwillmakedrinkingwateravailablewhereschoolmealsareservedduringmealtimes.Inaddition,studentswillbeallowedtobringandcarry(approved)waterbottlesfilledwithwaterwiththemthroughouttheday.

CompetitiveFoodsandBeveragesDuringtheschoolday,nofoodsandbeverageswillbesoldoutsideoftheschoolmealprograms(i.e.,“competitive”foodsandbeverages.)

CelebrationsandClassroomSnacksTheschoolsupportsahealthylearningenvironmentforstudentsandteachers–encouraginghealthychoicesthatallowthebestchanceforstudentstobealertandbeabletoconcentrateandlearn.Assuch,theschooldiscouragesgoodybags,candy,andjuice/punchwithlessthan50%juice.Inadditioncandyshallnotbedistributedinasareward.Theschoolwillbereviewingitspolicyonsellingcandyforthe5thgradeendofyearfundraisingforthe2017-2018schoolyear.Theschoolencourages:1. Classroomcelebrationsthatfocusonactivities(e.g.,givingfreetime,crafts,musicandreadingtime)

ratherthanonfood2. Ifclassroomcelebrationsincludefood,theyshouldstrivetoofferhealthyoptions(e.g.fruit,

popcorn,etc.)

Whencelebratingwiththechildren,ourschoolencouragesparentstobringinhealthysnacks.ViatheWellnessCouncil,wecanprovidetoparentsalistoffoodsandbeveragesthatmeetSmartSnacksnutritionstandards.

PhysicalActivity

Childrenshouldparticipateinphysicalactivityeveryday.

Physicaleducationwillnotbewithheldaspunishmentforanyreasonandotherphysicalactivityduringtheschoolday(including,butnotlimitedtorecessandphysicalactivitybreaks)willnotbewithheldaspunishmentexceptunderextenuatingcircumstances.

TheSchoolwillofferteachersandotherschoolstaffalistofideasforalternativewaystodisciplinestudents.

PhysicalEducationTheSchoolwillprovidestudentswithphysicaleducation,usinganage-appropriatephysicaleducationcurriculumconsistentwithnationalandstatestandardsforphysicaleducation.Thephysicaleducationcurriculumwillpromotethebenefitsofaphysicallyactivelifestyleandwillhelpstudentsdevelopskillstoengageinlifelonghealthyhabits.

Allstudentswillbeprovidedequalopportunitytoparticipateinphysicaleducationclasses.

Thephysicaleducationprogramwillpromotestudentphysicalfitnessthroughindividualizedfitnessandactivityassessments.WeusetheNYCDOEFITNESSGRAMinconjunctionwiththePhysicalBestCurriculum.

RecessOurSchoolwillofferatleast20minutesofrecessonallormostdaysduringtheschoolyear.Thispolicymaybewaivedonearlydismissalorlatearrivaldays.

Outdoorrecesswillbeofferedwhenweatherisfeasibleforoutdoorplay,atthediscretionoftheadministration.

IntheeventthattheSchoolmustconductindoorrecess,teachersandstaffwillpromotephysicalactivityforstudents,totheextentpracticable.Currently,thePAhascontractedwithE3Sportstoprovidearecessenhancementprogramsuchthatstudentsareprovideddailyactivityduringrecessregardlessofwhetherrecessisindoorsoroutdoors.

Recesswillcomplement,notsubstitutefor,physicaleducationclass.Recessmonitorsorteacherswillencouragestudentstobeactive.
