Dear Our Lady of Good Counsel Learning Community,
It has been wonderful to be back at school after a number of consecutive days at leadership meetings late last week and the beginning of this week. Last week the OLGC Administration Team joined with teams from across the South 5 Cluster to further develop learning plans and goals for 2018. Our 2018 goals are aligned to the BCE system wide challenge to enhance the literacy skills of all students. This year’s goal looks to build on from the good progress achieved last year through the Accelerate Literacy Learning Program. This year at OLGC we again focus on developing reading in the Early Years P-2 whilst also focusing on writing development Years 3-6. It is our hope that through using the Effective and Expected Teaching Practices we will be able to achieve our goals by meeting the needs of each and every learner within our school community. In the coming weeks we will communicate further with parents, our reading targets and our writing targets aligned to our writing analysis tool.
Last Tuesday, Mrs Drew and I also attended a workshop on the National School Improvement Tool. As school staff, we are always looking to further develop our knowledge and skills as we work towards being the best school we can be. Our annual goals form part of our School Improvement Plan. This year OLGC will conduct an Internal Review aligned to the National School Improvement Tool (NSIT) and the nine domains named within the tool. The NSIT is used nationally to evaluate and guide school renewal and having worked with this tool over the past week it is certainly an excellent resource and one that will be very beneficial in guiding future directions for improvement.
Queens Baton Relay The Queens Baton Relay will be coming through Gatton on the last day of Term, Thursday 29th March. This is a significant event and it will be one event that children will remember for life. It is not often that we have significant sporting events of this nature in our Country let alone State. The last big Athletic event in the state was the Commonwealth Games held in Brisbane in 1982. As a child who was 10 at the time, I can still remember the events I attended. I remember watching Rob De Castella win the Marathon, standing beside dad at Southbank.
SCHOOL UPDATE
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
It is our hope that we can join with the township to also make this event memorable for our
students. We are currently working with the information available to us to develop a plan to
view the Baton Relay as it comes through town on Railway Street. It is our hope, that in the
coming week we will be able to finalise a school plan for the day and communicate this with
parents. The Gatton stretch of the Baton Relay will end at the Gatton Show Grounds where a
larger community event will be occurring. I am aware that some families will also want to be a
part of these special celebrations and I would certainly support families in taking their children
to this event. Please watch this space for further details.
Student Bus Travel This week I have engaged in conversations with the Gatton Bus Service to discuss safety concerns that have been brought to our attention with students either interchanging or waiting at the High School of a morning. Presently bus runs come in from many areas of Gatton and the surrounding districts and join centrally at the High School Interchange, before bringing OLGC students to school. Safety concerns have been raised regarding students whilst waiting for the final bus to bring them to school. The bus company has advised that they will be providing supervision from the time the first bus arrives, until the final bus departs. They have also advised that they will be asking students to line up against the fence until the bus has stopped and the driver opens the door. This practise will ensure all students remain safe and do not rush to the curb to be the first on the bus as it arrives, which they are currently doing, and is unsafe. Parents could you please support the bus company by discussing with your children these new arrangements to support safe travel. As a school we will also support this new strategy with the students to improve safety for our students.
May we continue to sow for growth in 2018 as we serve with love and joy.

School/Parish Mass – Sunday 18th March 9am – St Mary’s Church Gatton
In consultation with Father Noy and Our Lady of the Valley Parish, a School/Parish mass has been planned for Sunday 18th March. An invitation is extended to all members of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Community to attend the Mass at 9am and the morning tea afterwards in the Community Centre, hosted by the staff at OLGC. I am also seeking volunteers to be involved in the Mass on the day (eg. Readers, alter servers etc). Please contact myself or the school office if you would like to be a part of the celebration. We look forward to joining with the Parish at several occasions throughout the year to strengthen the important partnership between school and parish.
OLGC School Choir
The choir met for the first time together this week to begin practising songs for our first event, the school/parish mass. It was wonderful to see such a big attendance of boys and girls. We look forward to singing at many school, parish and community events throughout the year.
Stations of the Cross – Good Friday 30th March
The Gatton Parish is seeking students from OLGC to be a part of the Stations of the Cross held at St Mary’s Church in Gatton at 9am on Good Friday. Students will be required to perform ‘freeze frames’ of the stations
of the cross. There will be plenty of opportunities to practice at school and these students will also be a part of the school Stations of the Cross held in the last week of this term. Please contact myself or the school office if your child/ren can be a part of this.
Project Compassion – Caritas Australia
Caritas Australia’s annual Lenten fundraising and awareness-raising appeal, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. A different story is featured each week during Lent. Focused on the theme “A Just Future,” and featuring a new country each week, the stories explain the issues faced in each country. They also highlight how Caritas Australia is working together with vulnerable people, helping them to develop their strengths and create change in their own communities. These stories can be read at http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion/
