Worship & Wonder Week Off

Following Jesus Week Off

1st-5th Rotation VBS Sunday

Pre K & K with Traci

This Sunday is a busy Sunday. Not only is it Vacation Bi-

ble School Sunday, it is also Promotion Sunday. This is where

a number of our kids are transitioning from one program of the

church to another. This is a very exciting time as it is a time for

students to start new chapters in their lives.

Thank you to all who supported our fundraiser luncheon last Sunday. I qualify it as a

success in that we had nine students come help, we made some money and I felt the food

was good all during the summer/vacation months. We are looking for more opportunities

in the future to fundraise for other missions and ministries for our youth group.

Peace. JW.

The Hard Road I went to Jumbo’s to buy some groceries after I

got back from vacation. The cashier was

complaining to the cashier next to her about the

weather. “It sure is hot outside!” she grumbled.

With a little sarcasm in her voice, the cashier next

to her responded, “Honey, this is July. It’s

supposed to be hot!”

hard directing Vacation Bible School with several

other volunteers from our church, including Amanda Phillips. Amanda has also

been working on the worship task force that has been assigned with the diffi-

cult duty of making our church more unified in

worship. The worship task force has also been

discussing having a worship service that would

begin with a meal to include some of the most

impoverished members of our community.

During a conversation with Amanda this

week about the demands of VBS and planning

worship and feeding the hungry, I said,

“Church sure can be hard.”

Amanda responded: “Well, this is following Jesus. It’s supposed to be hard!”

The Hard Road continued…

Amanda’s response runs contrary to

popular theology. I am afraid many

Christians in our culture have some

incorrect expectations regarding this journey we call “discipleship.” They

mistakenly believe that following Jesus will make everything in life easier. If they

commit themselves to living a Christian life, then God will bless them with health

and wealth. Relationships at home and at work will improve. Faith will bring

comfort and peace. Jesus will meet their every need. Success and good fortune

will follow them all the days of their life.

However, Jesus said that the opposite is actually true. Faith has more to do

with working hard with children in Vacation Bile School and making uncomforta-

ble decisions to make our church more unified and missional than it does with

being comfortable and having good fortune.

Jesus once said, “…the road is hard that leads to life…” (Matthew 7:14).

In other words, “Honey, this is following Jesus. It’s supposed to be hard!”

Communion for Assisted Living or Nursing Home Residents

I just wanted to send you a note and tell you how much the boys and I enjoyed our time at your church. Thank you so much for hosting the event! We loved the crafts and face painting. The fish tanks are their pride and joy. For all of the volunteers were just so pleasant and helpful. The day really boosted the boys eagerness to “get back to school.” They were very prideful of their book-bags. Again, thank you. Dorothy Millay
