the hothouseMaking Music Come Alive!
For stand-alone experiential days they offer the big world
band (a collection of drumming and percussion instruments
from four continents providing an exiting multi-cultural mix).
For developmental programmes they offer the same rhythmic
approach, and apply it to African style drumming, Samba,
Ukeleles or South-African style choral singing.
The essence of the approach is to explore an easily accessible
vocabulary of ‘universal’ rhythmic phrases which the children
can very quickly build into a working practice. The results are
very impressive. As one head teacher said recently after a day
of the big world band, ‘It was amazing to see the high quality
of performance achieved by our four classes, each class having
had only 45 minutes with you.’
the hothouse harnesses each child's excitement and
enthusiasm for making music, and, at the same time, trains
their focus (listening, watching and awareness of what's
happening), to enable the communication and team work
necessary for creating a wonderful whole group musical
experience.
the hothouse travels with instruments for up to 40 partici-
pants per group. They can generally work with 4 – 6 class size
groups in a day, with an option for a performance/celebration
to finish. Alternatively they can work with one or two groups
for longer and in greater depth.
Performance/celebrations provide an exciting and bonding
experience for a school, with lots of audience participation
(including parents if appropriate). They anchor the developing
skills and create a celebratory and supportive atmosphere that
gives each child an opportunity to contribute to the best of
their ability, and be recognised for doing so.

Skip2BFitFitness Workshops
Skip2BFit has developed their ownunique Skipping Programme in abid to help cut rising child obesitylevels. It has been designed toeducate children about fitness andhealthy eating, as well asimproving their maths and computer literacy, and to date hasdirectly impacted the lives of over 500,000 children.
Skip2BFit use colourful and easy to use counting ropes thatchildren love. They teach children how to skip like a boxer infive easy steps in a very short time. They then challenge thechildren to see how many skips they can do in two minutes.Skip2BFit have their own CD with tracks of music all timed fortwo minutes. After getting a score from their first skip, thechildren are then challenged to improve. It doesn’t matter whatthe first was, it may be two or 200, but anyone can improveand the majority do. By doing this, they experience that effortand perseverance can lead to success. We call this the ‘yesfeeling’, and this can be transferred into the classroom, to helpmotivate and achieve.
Skip2BFit is the only skipping organisation that has become aNational Partner of Change 4 Life promoting skippingnationally together with healthy eating. Skip2BFit believes thatbeing healthy is not just about exercise and to encouragehealthy eating they provide free fruit in all workshops, eitherblueberries, clementines, apples or cherries.
After the skipping workshop they also provide a uniqueskip2bfit kitbag, providing teachers with all the resources theyneed to continue with the programme.
Prime Minister Rt. Hon. David Cameron commented whenvisiting Skip2Bfit in action: “Skip2Bfit is a brilliant newrefreshing idea for schools.”
Box2BFit takes the concept of aerobic exercise to new levels.Designed for all children who wish to take on new and excitingchallenges, the Box2BFit system is fully modular and easilytailored to fit your classes. Ideal for girls and boys. Up to 15fitness stations allow exercises to be varied for each session.Kitbags contain everything needed for a Teacher or YoungLeaders to host a Box2BFit training session, including qualitymedicine balls, focus pads, skipping ropes, Box2Bfit CD stationcards, and an instructional DVD. Make Every Second Count...‘I have likened John with Jamie Oliver in that Jamie Oliver reminded us that diet
and behaviour are associated, John reminds us that physical activity and
mental capability are associated’Andrew Scott-Clark
Director of Public Health
Newlands Primary School
‘The use of specially designed skipping ropes that count the skips proved a valuable tool for the children. Not only did it enable them to see their improvement but also enabled them to work out mathematically the progress they made on successive two minute skips skipping sessions’
Skip2BFit was started by professional boxing trainer John McCormack, a former No.2 ABA rankedHeavyweight of Great Britain. John’s passion for boxing and fitness training gave rise to the Skip2BFitprogramme, which has now proved a real hit with over 500,000 children (and their teachers). Combiningthe traditional fun element of skipping with a ‘new generation’ digital skipping rope, pupils are rediscov-ering the joys of exercise. Box2Bfit workshops are also now available for junior and senior children.
“It was a FANTASTIC day enjoyed by all (children AND staff!).Our school is still buzzing from the event. Children are busy inthe playground trying to improve their scores everyday; Iwould definitely recommend Skip2BFit to any school!” Vicky Tonkin PLT, Poltair School, St. Austell Cornwall

The Rock CentreLearning Through Participation
Working with small, manageable groups enablesstudents to gain the most fromtheir visit. Little time is wastedsitting around waiting for turns.Climbing and abseiling groupswork with one instructor tofour pupils. Abseiling is a skillwhich can be learnt byanybody. Abseiling is an exhil-arating, challenging and funpart of climbing, mountaineer-ing and potholing and eventimid participants can becomeproficient quickly. RockClimbing demands verydifferent skills from abseiling.Natural ability coupled with determination and a positive approach, will result in success. The novice routes used to introduce rock climbing are carefullychosen to provide challenge and excitement while stillremaining within the capabilities of participants. IndoorClimbing is one of the fastest growing activities and The RockCentre offer introductory sessions with experienced instructorsor more advanced sessions for experienced climbers.
Caving can evoke some fear in the minds of first time cavers.Sessions are therefore approached with sympathetic andpatient understanding and plenty of encouragement. The twolocal caves used are Pridhamsleigh and Bakers Pit which offernumerous routes and are ideal for novices, while still providingan excellent caving experience. Caving groups need to besmall ensuring easy communications, good groupmanagement and safety procedures. This is normally oneinstructor to a maximum of five or six students, with an extraassistant instructor where necessary.
The Rock Centre also offers Tree Top Adventure courses; a newextreme adventure in the branches high above the ground.Spend a fun filled session moving from tree to tree on zipslides, Tyroleans, cable bridges, airy platforms, and balancebeams. Enjoy bird’s eye aerial views in complete safety from aunique and thrilling vantage.
The Rock Centre also operate a Mobile Climbing Wall thatprovides an excellent facility with ten routes of varyingdifficulty. The wall allows schools to enjoy the climbingexperience without the need for travel arrangements andguarantees as much climb time as possible for your group.Bouldering is another activity that provides an excellent warmup exercise and learning resource that is particularly useful onwet days or dark evenings.

Mosaic MadnessMosaic Murals for Schools
Projects can beinside or outside, floor or wall basedand can be createdby one class, oneyear or the wholeschool. Every childcan then say, “Ihelped to makethat,” and this willimprove selfesteem and motivation, while everyone has lots of fun.
School projects include:
Wall Murals and Signs – designed to fit any specified location, inside or out.Floor Murals – use concrete paving slabs and can be anydesign or shape.Column Murals – using recycled chimney pot or ceramic drainup to 1.8m height.Human Sundial – this type of sundial is ground based, allowing children or adults to become part of the mechanism.Cross or Crucifix – ranging from 0.8m, to the most popular1.8m high.Seating – come in any shape or size and usually based on abrick or block construction and are priced based on surfacearea.
All materials used are suitable for external use. The tiles areswimming pool tiles which are slightly thicker and so offer lessrisk of cuts and they come in a wide range or colours includingdifferent skin tones and school jumper colours.
Each project leaves a permanent mosaic for the school to enjoybut participants will also benefit from:
• Designing and creating something from start to finish.Mosaics are instant art and accessible at every stage, especially the messy grouting.
• Creating something that can be seen everyday from outsidethe school, for a child it must be great to see something youcreated even after you have left the school. It also allowsthe wider community to see the children’s artwork either insitu or in the local press.
• Mosaics is just a big jigsaw, which means you can have awhole school project which even the little ones can take partin... sky or grass is always a safe area, although you have tocheck for upside down tiles!
• David encourages each school to have a TA allocated to theproject to learn the basics of mosaics so they can then dofurther in house projects.

Art Works Puppet and Animation Workshops
Workshops for the day involve children making their own
shadow puppets using card and coloured gels. If time allows,
they devise their own simple shows in small groups and can
then perform these shows to each other, or to another class.
The day is suitable for Keystage 1 children upwards and you
can easily see what other curricular activities are involved in
such a day and what ‘follow on’ things can be planned. There
are three shows to choose from.
In addition Steve also provides:
Puppet Making – workshops tailored to your groups needs.
All workshops are simple enough to enable the less able to
produce a workable puppet and yet adaptable enough for the
more able to spend time developing their puppets character.
Junk Puppets – using recycled milk containers as puppet heads
are particularly popular and very adaptable - whatever your
theme. I also offer training for those who wish to work with
their own groups.
Mask-making – simple enough to enable the less able to
produce a wearable mask and yet adaptable enough for the
more able to spend time developing the masks character. The
masks are created from cardboard template designs which can
be built into the creature or character, using scrap card,
newspaper and masking tape. The end result is remarkably
strong and visually stunning. I also offer training for those who
wish to work with their own groups.
Animation Workshops can be magical, but when the
magicians are the children in your classroom it also becomes an
enjoyable but purposeful teaching aid for many subjects. The
finished animation can possess a visual novelty which helps to
make the subject more appealing. The final animation can
further increase your children’s self esteem by being shown on
the internet or at festivals or even by being used as a direct
teaching aid in other classes or schools. Because the production
process can embrace varied skills including writing, drawing,
sculpting, music, audio-visual design and computer literacy, it
can also provide students with an opportunity to explore their
individual strengths and interests across the curriculum. Stop
Motion Pro is used to create the animation.

The showslast for 45 mins and can be performed to the whole school or just to those children attending the workshop.

Rough Magic Storytelling, Poetry& Craft Workshops
Don’s storytelling and poetry workshops awaken this creativeinvolvement, stimulating the imagination and the joy of wordsto express feelings. His puppet and craft work does exactly thesame while increasing spatial awareness and problem solving.Every craft session and workshop begins with a Traditional Talewhich is great fun and puts everyone in a relaxed mood. All ofDon’s work can be tailored to any area of The NationalCurriculum, so if you have a particular request, please ask.
Story Telling Performance & Workshops – emphasises thattelling a story is ‘painting pictures with words’ and explainshow all storytellers use the six magic words to create theirtales - WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHY AND WHO. Thechildren, working in small groups use chance-picked objectsfrom a ‘magic bag’ to create their own tales and recount them.
Poetry Sessions – explore how to think in `images` and brain-storm why a poet writes a poem. Their `drive` to put into wordsa particular experience and the feelings it evokes. Don reads afew examples to illustrate this and the group choose one poemand examine it in detail.
Shadow Puppets – shows can incorporate any theme youwish, within reason and with notice. Don carries a stock ofpuppets for simple Traditional Tales such as Three Billy GoatsGruff and the Three Little Pigs.
Milk-Bottle Puppets – using card and masking tape thestructure of the puppet (person, animal, bird, mini-beast, fishetc.) is built up and coloured with tissue paper and PVA.
Finger Puppets – The Finger Puppets are simple to construct, yetamazingly effective, and can incorporate any theme you wish.
Mask Making Workshops – Everybody loves making andwearing masks. Don’s method allows a mask to be made, in aday, using card and masking tape to build up the structure, beit of Person, Animal, Bird, Fish or Bug.
Victorian Toy Theatre – workshop gives your class theopportunity of exploring the intimate joy of the Toy Theatre, with the pleasure of drawing and cutting out the characters fortheir own play.

Don Newton has worked in West Country schools as a teller of traditional tales and poetry, a puppeteerand craft worker, since 1987. Working predominantly in the primary/pre school sector he adapts hisstories and workshops to each age group, convinced that all learning begins with Creative Play, wherechildren can extend their horizons; learn to take risks and imagine solutions to problems but without reallife consequences.
“I thought I would let you know how impressed we all werewith the day you provided us with last week. The childrenwere thrilled with their puppets and the parents were equallyimpressed. We had the local press in on Friday and they tookphotos of the puppets and heard responses from The children.Thank you again we would highly recommend yourworkshops to any school.” Mel Johns Culmstock Primary

Jonathan's Jungle RoadshowAnimal Encounters in School
Jonathan is able to provide age-appropriate presentations for
any group from Pre-school through to College & beyond and
provides children & adults with the opportunity to gain hands-
on, personal experience of some absolutely wonderful animals
as part of a truly memorable educational experience.
Some sessions allow Jonathan’s amazing animals to be
experienced really close up! By using his video camera's super-
macro function and a suitably connected big screen (interactive
whiteboard/large panel TV) it is possible to highlight tiny
details on the animals which would normally remain unseen.
Whilst many of the workshops are tailored to meet the specific
requirements of the Science curriculum for particular year
groups, each topic can be adapted for children of any age,
including Foundation Stage 2 and pre-school children. Just a
few examples of available workshop topics include:
• Minibeasts/Rainforests/Animal senses
• Life cycles/Habitats & adaptation
• Moving, growing & changing/Reproduction
• Variation & classification/Wildlife conservation
Finally, sessions can be ‘just for fun’ and not have a focus on any
particular topic, but simply be an opportunity for the children (and
adults) to meet these amazing animals up close and personally!

Architecture WorkshopsBuilding The Curriculum
The workshops engage pupils in 3d visual problem solving, bothindividually and as a team, using a mix of higher order andcreative thinking strategies. Workshops are adapted to suit pupilsabilities, enabling G&T students and SEN students to have thesame workshops experience. Increasingly used for extension/enrichment, PSHCE and citizenship activities for KS3, 4 & 5.
The workshops engage students in fun activity whilst helpingthem develop as Creative Thinkers, Effective Participants,Independent Enquirers, Self Managers and Team Workers, through a combination of individual and group work, designproblem solving and creativity. Underlying the requirementsfor communication, co-operative skills, logistical reasoning, critical evaluation and self reflection.
The Workshops are split into two categories:
‘Build-It’: Focused Practical Tasks, using design technology, maths, literacy, science, history and drama to differing degreespupils create large scale reconstructions of famous architec-tural landmarks, i.e. Egyptian Pyramids; Greco-RomanTemple; Tudor Globe Theatre; Victorian Crystal Palace.
‘Kre8’ workshops stimulate pupil’s imagination, interpretativeand visual problem solving skills helping to develop higher orderthinking strategies. Focusing on investigation, Disassembly andEvaluation as Design and Make assignments. Working in teams, pupils use DT skills, Maths and Science to design and build largescale structures i.e: Bridges; Shelters; Olympic Sculptures;Skyscrapers. Kre8 workshops at KS 3 &4 are often run as yeargroup or inter-school competitions by our regular clients.
Key Stage 1 (inc. reception) – Using number, counting, shapeand space pupils work together to build simple modular forms, which go on to form the basic parts of most KS2 workshops.
Secondary design course – Developed to help spatialawareness and visualisation skills of older students consideringfurther study in architecture and design. The spatial interven-tions of 3D art and architecture are explored through precedentstudy with the students developing their ideas further asabstract art and architecture; introducing site and locality.Students consider environmental impact of their designs inrelation to existing urban developments and green field sites.

Workshops
Drumming – The Frame or Thunder Drum is the traditionalinstrument for many American Indians and is used forceremony and celebration. Participants will have theopportunity to play one of these drums whilst singing, dancingand telling stories.
Traditional Songs and Chants – All of the songs and chantswe share were taught to us directly and have been sung formany, many generations - The Wolf, Bear and Crow songs arethe most popular. We also teach chants and songs from othertribes.
Crafts – The craft workshops we run are more than just anexercise in creating something wonderful - the process ofcreating is a way to share and explore ideas of personal growthand understanding. The colours and images chosen all have aparticular meaning to each individual and their community, family and school. This approach means that Kaya's workshopshave been very effective at engaging everyone, even the mostdisengaged.
Stories – We don't just tell the stories, we make space for thewhole group to make the stories come to life with acting, dancing and drumming - everyone is involved in re-tellingthese wonderful stories with many lessons and hiddenmeanings waiting to be unearthed.
Traveling the Path of Balance
It has long been the tradition of the Wolf Clan TeachingLodge/Seneca Indian Historical Society and GrandmotherTwylah to reach out to the many Peoples of Noh-yeh-ohn-jeh, Motherearth, and share the Earth Wisdom, Prophecy andPhilosophy of the Seneca. It is a Dream of Peace long in theunfolding of time coming forward in our consciousness andshared from our hearts...
Sharing Through Oral Tradition
“Native Oral Tradition, in its very essence, is a heartteaching. When wisdom is shared from person to person;heart to heart the message is sent out and received ener-getically from one heart to another. This is a direct pathwith no deviations. The most important aspect of ourjourney, as guides and teachers, is to touch as manyindividuals heart to heart as we can, on our mission ofPeace.” Nya:weh Sge:no (Thank you for being)

health professionals and practitioners, covering a wide
spectrum of the 14-19 curriculum including Science, Health &
Social Care, PSHEE and Citizenship.
Facilities include an ambulance, an A&E triage area, a hospital

These issues are addressed in the use of one day, targeted

A selection of the scenarios at HealthTec South West
The Patient Journey – Students experience the patient journey
of a heart attack casualty and help to diagnose the reason for
the attack by looking at their lifestyle. They will discover the
different roles in the NHS and how they work together, while
learning about the science behind the heart attack and its
associated treatment. The basics of CPR, A&E staff and
equipment, treatment in a hospital ward and rehabilitation are
all covered.
Care of Older People – In a simulated environment, students
learn how to overcome a variety of physical and sensory
impairments by experiencing the difficulties of disabilities and
impairments through specialist equipment. They will
experience what it is like to suffer from the various conditions
and complaints that affect the elderly, such as arthritis and
visual impairment by wearing ‘age suits’ and ‘goggles’.
Forensic Science – Students are tasked with investigating a
crime scene, collecting evidence and following the procedures
of an investigating team to identify their suspect and put them
on trial. The scenario requires students to record evidence and
learn various techniques, such as fingerprinting, collecting
fibres and analysing footprints. Working together, students will
also take witness statements. This is relevant for students
studying forensic science but it is also appropriate for the
justice element of the SHD Diploma and general science.

JustDifferent is a dynamic charity founded in 2007 by Toby Hewson, a young man with Cerebral Palsy. Itaims to help create positive social attitudes towards disability and difference among children and youngpeople through free, stimulating and educational workshops. Created and delivered by disabled people, these interactive workshops are designed to help pupils think more imaginatively about the world they livein, and the diversity of the people within it.
“Toby is the best speaker I’ve ever seen. I’ve never witnessedthe boys so interested and touched by a speaker before. It wasbrilliant, I’m so glad I came along.”Teacher, Magdalen College School
“This has made me realise how easy it is to make assumptionsabout disabled people and stopped me from making themanymore.” Secondary pupil, Magdalen College School
Aiming to make a positive difference to the lives of disabledand non-disabled people through education, JustDifferentprovides innovative, interactive and exciting Primary andSecondary workshops that challenge out-dated or mis-informed perceptions.
Specifically trained to contribute to the social and emotionaleducation of young people, our presenters are engaging,modern-day story tellers bringing a light-hearted attitude todisability and difference.
Why we do it – We see a world in which difference is alwaysvalued. The earlier children and young people begin to learnabout disability and difference, the more likely they are toaccept it as a normal part of the world in which they live. Ourworkshops give pupils the opportunity to see how disabledpeople do the things that non-disabled people do, just thatthey do them differently. We invite pupils to question theirperceptions of disability and difference. We shine a positivelight on disability and difference. We empower pupils with theability to change the way society views and treats people whoare different.
“We may look or appear different on the outside, but we areall the same on the inside.”
Since 2007, we have delivered 1,549 workshops (satisfyingthe requirements of the PSHE and Citizenship parts of theNational Curriculum) and reached 47,000 children, from KeyStage 1 through to Key Stage 4. We currently offer:
PRIMARY: KEY STAGE 1 & 2 (lasting 30-60 minutes) –Workshops include real-life story-telling, photo-story presen-tations, practical challenges, personal aids, quizzes and Q&Asessions.
SECONDARY: KEY STAGE 3 (lasting 60-90 minutes) – Workshopsinclude real-life story-telling and photo presentations, practicalchallenges with etiquette awareness and group discussions.
