    5. Our School With the motto ‘Forward and Upward’, SKHCYSS is one of the Christian schools run by the Anglican (Hong Kong) Secondary Schools Council Limited in Hong Kong, and is situated in the Eastern Kowloon Diocese of Hong Kong. The school was founded in September 1989 with the aid of the benefactor, Mrs Chan Cheng Kit-Wan. It was named to commemorate her late husband, Mr Bert Chan Young, who was a dedicated Christian of the Anglican Church in Australia. Our school is an aided whole-day secondary grammar school, where English Language is the medium of instruction. The school covers an area of 4,000 Sq.M. To cope with the new curriculum and education reform, our school is striving to develop our curriculum in line with the four key tasks stipulated in the new curriculum : Reading to Learn, Project Learning, Information Technology for Interactive Learning and Moral and Civic Education. In the academic year 05-06, an integrated curriculum was first implemented in S.1. Based on the learning areas, new subjects namely Civic Education, Humanities Education, Science, Technology Education and Art Education were introduced. In the academic year 07-08, the new curriculum will be extended to S.3.

The Academic Committee was restructured in the year 06-07. A new post, Curriculum Development Coordinator, was set up to lead the Subject Development Team. Members include all Key Learning Area Coordinators. They all endeavour to prepare for the New Senior Secondary curriculum. In the same year, Invitational Education was promoted in the school. In addition, the School EMI Team launched and monitored programmes which provided a rich English learning environment in order to enhance the students’ English ability. To meet the new curriculum reform, all staff members have made an effort to manifest the learning function of the school. Every year, the Teachers’ Affairs & Staff Development Committee organizes many staff training activities. By introducing inter-disciplinary peer classroom observation, a peer learning culture has been developed among our colleagues. The Academic Committee has also arranged Collaborative Lesson Preparation sessions for different subjects to design learning activities with an inquisitive approach. Furthermore, the school has made good use of the Staff Development Fund to employ additional staff so that teachers are available to participate in NSS training. Up to July 2009, there are twenty-five classrooms, two computer rooms, one Multi-Media Language Centre, four science laboratories (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Integrated Science), seven special rooms (Design and Technology, Music, Art and Design, Home Economics, Geography, Library and Student Activity Room), Social Worker Room, Student Union Office and two Interview Rooms. Besides, our school hall, all classrooms and special rooms are installed with air-conditioners, multi-media projectors and computers. Together with the real player and intranet system in our school, classroom, extra-curricular activities can be carried out smoothly. In addition, a sports climbing wall in our school hall was subsidized by the Quality Education Fund in order to develop students’ potential in sports and powers of resilience. In order to create a cordial and harmonious school environment, and enhance students’ sense of belonging to school, a nameplate designed by students has been installed outside each classroom since the year 06-07. A staff photo has also been posted outside the staff room. All these were to promote Invitational Education. To prepare for the implementation of NSS, construction works were completed in the summer holiday of 2009 to improve the learning environment and facilities. This has resulted in more teaching space and higher teaching efficacy. The project included building a new Staff Room and Lecture Room in the original area of the Design and Technology Room, changing the Home Economics Room and Needlework Room into a Design and Technology Room, Home Management Room and Multipurpose Rooms, and converting the old Staff Rooms into four classrooms. Other works like flooring the covered-playground with non-slippery tiles and mending the outer walls of the front stair cases have been undertaken. As mentioned by Professor Yin Cheong CHENG about the feature of school-based management in his publication School Effectiveness and School-based Management: A Mechanism for Development (2001), School Mission is the shared expectation, beliefs and values among all the teaching staff, “guiding the educational activities and working direction of all the school members” (p.66). In this regard, the school-based

  • 5

organizational culture in our school works in line with the new curriculum targets under the education reform and serves as a signpost for fulfilling our shared vision.

    6. School Administration

With our continuous effort of exploring and developing a school-based management system/structure, the school plays a more effective role in achieving the missions mentioned above. Therefore, besides the School Board, the school has established an efficient and effective management team which is comprised of 10 functional committees. They are all empowered to work according to the specific school culture to stipulate policies concerning student development and the school. Meanwhile, different functional committees have been set up since the year 99-00 to cater to the needs of the school and to assist the Principal in planning school policies. For example, the School Financial Team was set up in the school year 99-00. Four new teams, the School Improvement Team, the School Self-evaluation Team, the Monitoring Committee on Trading Operations and the Student Development Team, were established in 04-05 for the betterment of the school. In the school year 06-07, the School EMI Team was set up. SEN Team, Ad hoc Integration of Discipline-Guidance Team and Ad hoc OLE & SLP Team were also set up in the year 08-09. Since the school year 98-99, the school has carried out the policies of school-based management which include compiling the Yearly School Plan, Yearly School Report, implementing Appraisal System and preparing policy documents. Moreover, starting from 00-01, budget plans made by committees and subject panels have to be approved by the Financial Team. The school also formulates the School Development Plan (03-06) from the school year 03-04. Through different meetings, notices and questionnaires, the school is able to discuss and announce school polices, consult and collect opinions from teachers. For example, the Advisory Committee is responsible for discussing policies proposed by other committees and functional teams. There are also Subject Panel Meetings, Staff Meetings, Form Meetings as well as Staff Management Consultative Meetings in which teacher representatives can collect teachers’ opinions on school matters through questionnaires. The staff appraisal report also enables them to grow professionally.

    10. Our Teaching and Learning

10.1 Curriculum design 10.1.1 The new integrated curriculum in S.1 starting from the academic year 05-06 aims at enhancing students' interest in learning and awareness of their living environment. It also encourages students to take initiative in learning, construct knowledge, and establish autonomy, involvement, optimism and a correct attitude in life. Under the new curriculum, Chinese Language, English Language, Mathematics and Physical Education remain unchanged. According to the four key learning areas which are Science Education, Technology Education, Personal, Social & Humanities Education, and Arts Education, all other subjects are reorganized into five different S.1 subjects, namely Integrated Science, Technology Education, Humanities Education, Civic Education and Visual Arts which will be promoted in all junior forms in consecutive years. An inquisitive approach is adopted and lessons are planned with real-life topics. In order to cater for different interests and abilities of students in S.4 and S.5, a wide choice of subjects are available. For S.6 and S.7, many subjects are provided to suit the interests of students studying in the Arts, Commerce and Science streams.

10.2 Curriculum development plan To comply with the four key tasks set in the new curriculum, and to provide students with different learning experience and to widen their horizons, the school launched a series of learning activities. In line with Reading to Learn, Reading Week was continued this year with the theme “Forward in Grace”. Mr Siu Hoi Yat, a renowned writer, was invited to share with our teachers and students his ideas for developing skills in learning English. A variety of activities like book exhibition, reading workshop, reading quizzes and book sharing were organized to help students build the habit of reading and raise their interest in reading. They can also enhance students’ learning autonomy. As for Information Technology Teaching and Learning, the school encouraged students to learn actively on-line. Chinese and English on-line reading, on-line exercises and discussion forums were some learning resources available for students. Self-learning through the Internet, exchanging

  • 12

opinions on-line and teaching with I.T. equipment in the lessons were common in the school. In Project Learning, the main focus is on interdisciplinary activities. In junior forms, project learning aims at developing students’ inquiry ability and generic skills through different forms of inquiry learning. It can also prepare students for studying the NSS subject Liberal Studies. The fourth key task is Moral and Civic Education. Students’ social awareness was raised through activities such as flag selling, voluntary work, visiting sick children, mentally disabled children and elderly homes. These offered them the opportunity to serve the community. Students were also provided with activities to discover more about the motherland. We continued to arrange a study tour for all S.1 students to ShenZhen Splendid China Folk Culture Village. Moreover, 43 students visited our sister school, Cheong Kong Secondary School, in Fo Shan, Guongdong province where cultural studies and exchanges were undertaken. Students were encouraged to participate in activities related to our motherland organized by different institutions. This academic year, two S.6 students and four S.1-S.3 students joined the Award Scheme for Hong Kong Student Leaders organized by the Education Bureau and the national education course organized by National Education Centre respectively. They studied the affairs in China and received training in Beijing. In addition, in the summer holiday of 2009, 10 students, along with students from two other schools, participated in the the Sichuan Service Trip held by YMCA of Hong Kong and went to the devastated areas after the earthquake. There, the students taught primary and secondary school students English and visited Elderly Homes and Children’s Homes.

Also, the school acknowledges the importance of life-wide learning and arranged the Life-Wide Learning Day, Activity Learning Day and Life-Wide Learning lessons for S.1 to S.3 students. In addition, a variety of activities such as competitions, visits, talks, library skills lessons and lessons about critical thinking were arranged to provide life-wide learning opportunities. Since the academic year 06-07, the school has established an “Outside border Competition Scholarship” as an award to those students who were able to represent Hong Kong in competitions outside the territory. Five students from the Mathematics Team went to Nanjing this summer and competed with other students in a Chinese youth forum. They had a chance to learn from other students from all over China. Their excellent performance helped them to win a bronze medal in an “Interesting Mathematics Problem Solving Skills Competiton”, a silver medal in a “Mathematics Modelling Competition” and other awards.

    10.3 Catering for Student Diversity

Considering the needs of individual students, Chinese and English Remedial Classes, Homework Tutorial Class, Revision Classes for exams and Enhancement Courses were arranged. For the Chinese and English Language subjects, there are split classes in S.1, S.4 and S.5. Different courses were also provided to both high achieving and low achieving students in order to consolidate their language learning. Starting from this academic year, the school has nominated some outstanding students to take courses offered by universities for talented students in order to develop their potentials. Also, the school set up the SEN Team in the year 08-09 so that students with special needs in learning can be catered.

  • 13

10.4 Policy on Academic Assessments To assess students’ progress in academic studies, the school requires students, except S.5 and S.7 students, to take two form tests and one final examination every year. Some subjects also assess students based on their performance in lessons and daily homework.

    11. Major Concerns (Achievements and Reflection)

11.1 First major development : implementing curriculum reform and life-wide learning (1) Drafting a new structure for the New Senior Secondary curriculum

The structure for the New Senior Secondary curriculum has been completed. The structure includes three parts, namely core subjects (Chinese, English, Mathematics and Liberal Studies), elective subjects (including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Combined Science, Chinese History, Chinese Literature, Economics, Geography, Information Communication Technology, Business, Accounting and Financial Studies, and Ethics and Religious Studies) and Other Learning Experience. This year, the second survey ascertaining students’ preferences on NSS subject selection was carried out. The subject selection process for the first batch of NSS students has also been completed.

    (2) Continuing to implement and evaluate junior forms curriculum integration Curriculum integration has been implemented for many years. Regular reviews were undertaken to enhance learning efficacy and lay a sound foundation for the NSS curriculum. Some Curriculum Development Council officers who were responsible for the key learning area Personal, Social and Humanities Education have reviewed the related subjects Civic Education and Humanities Education in our school and held a curriculum review workshop. Their feedback was positive.

    (3) Developing student-oriented pedagogy

To enhance students’ interest in learning, thinking skills and learning autonomy, the school continued to arrange Collaborative Lesson Preparation sessions and peer classroom observations. By emphasizing an inquisitive approach in the lessons, teaching and learning efficacy in individual subjects was improved. Open-ended questions and diversified self-learning tasks were also incorporated in daily exercises, pre-lesson and post-lesson activities, tests and examinations, in order to enhance students’ learning autonomy, language skills and thinking ability.

    (4) Implementing policies to help students with different learning abilities in making

progress in academic performance In order to narrow the gap of academic performance between low and high

achievers and enhance the results of all students in general, various enhancement schemes were implemented in different forms. As a result, Homework Award Scheme, Homework Tutorial Class, Revision Classes for examinations, Subject-based Enhancement Courses and extra lessons during long holidays were arranged. Teachers also catered to the needs of particular students by providing suitable academic assistance inside or outside the classroom. This year, additional courses for both high and low achievers in English and high achievers in Mathematics were continued. Some students were also subsidized to take

  • 14

courses provided by tertiary institutes for talented students. All those students participating in the courses commented that it was a fruitful experience for them.

    (5) Improving students’ proficiency in both Chinese and English language

To provide more language training and enhance students’ language proficiency, split class teaching was adopted in S.1, S.4 and S.5 Chinese and English lessons. Some S.2 students were also provided with remedial teaching. With a lower teacher-student ratio, teachers were able to cater to the needs of students. In general, students participated actively in the lessons. Teachers teaching split classes and remedial classes agreed that there was a prominent and positive effect on students’ language development.

In Chinese Language, the Chinese reading lessons were introduced in the year

06-07 to help students build a reading habit. The ‘Current Issues’ lessons, which aimed at training students’ thinking skills, covered daily life issues and current affairs. This academic year, lower and higher form students participated in the debating competition for junior secondary students held by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and the Sing Tao Inter-School Debating Competition respectively. In the Inter-Secondary School Drama Creating Competition, the students in our school won the 1st runner-up and a merit. This demonstrated that our students could make achievements in different learning areas. For English Language, inter-class debate competitions were held for S.4 and S.6 students to give students more training in oral English and in particular improve students’ ability to think critically in English. They were also encouraged to join the English Debate Team in school. The students in the team showed a great deal of involvement and enthusiasm in the inter-school competitions. They performed very well and their language skills and overall confidence have improved.

11.2 Second major development : continuing and enhancing student development policies

    (1) Launching “Invitational Education”, coordinating, implementing and evaluating students development policies From the beginning of the school year 06-07, “Invitational Education” was promoted in our school. With careful consideration in the 5Ps (People, Place, Policy, Program and Process), the three operating assumptions in Invitational Theory - trust, respect and optimism has been developed in our school. This year, the idea of Invitational Education was further incorporated into the student development policies. The major policies were :

    I. continuing the “Double class teachers” system in S.2, II. organizing an “Outstanding Students’ Dinner” III. making “Sunshine Calls” to strengthen the communication between the

parents and the school by positively praising students’ good performances.

The policy of “Double class teachers” was recognized by teachers for its positive effect. Therefore, it will be continued in S. 2 and S.5 in the coming academic year. The first “Outstanding Students’ Dinner” was successfully held. Both students and parents understood that the outstanding performance of students was appreciated. This can help to raise the students’ self-esteem. Moreover, more teachers started to agree with the idea of “Sunshine Calls”. To further strengthen the communication between the parents and the school, it will be renamed as

  • 15

“Sunshine Message”. It is hoped that teachers can communicate with parents through different media like phone calls, emails or SMS to provide a stronger backup in students’ growth.

    (2) Coordinating, implementing and evaluating student leadership training This year, leadership training in the school was implemented through experiential activities. The targeted students were from S.4 to S.7. From the questionnaire collected, 96% of the participating students felt satisfied with the whole plan. All the students reflected that this activity could effectively raise their self-understanding and their strengths and weaknesses. 96% and 92% of the participants agreed that they could view and understand the qualities of being a leader, and that the activity could help them develop their talents. In addition, the “Student Leadership Development Programme” for S.2 students was completed. The organizer praised the good performance of our students. They were commented on as being active and involved. The S.2 class teachers also agreed that the activity could develop the students’ potential in leadership.

    (3) Setting up policy to develop senior form students, preparing for the NSS elements

‘Student Learning Profile’ and ‘Other Learning Experiences’ Corresponding to the implementation of the NSS, the Ad hoc OLE & SLP Team

stipulated the expectation of students joining extra-curricular activities. On top of this, amendments were made to the guidelines regarding students joining extra-curricular activities. The development of service groups was also emphasized.

11.3 Third major development : Fostering an English-rich learning environment in school

to improve students’ English competence (1) The School EMI Team aims to launch and monitor programmes which promote

English learning in school in order to provide a rich English learning environment. As scheduled, the School EMI Team used the funding from the Education Bureau to provide some school-based professional development courses in English in order to enhance the efficacy of teaching in English.

    (2) Enhancing students’ competence in using English for learning and their

everyday communication through the design of school-based formal and informal curriculum The English panel employed well-experienced NET teachers to provide language art lessons for junior form students and debate lessons for S.4 and S.6 students. This not only raised students’ interest in learning, but also helped to prepare for the English language art component in the NSS. The school has continued to organize English speaking days and the content of Lunchtime delight has also been diversified. In the morning assembly, students were able to practise their oral English and learn daily English and culture through “One Minute Vocabulary”. Moreover, the “English Team”, which was comprised of senior form students, designed various English learning activities for the students. They included English Café, English Cooking Competition, English Stall Games, English Quiz and English Music & Movies Appreciation. To encourage students to learn more English vocabulary,

  • 16

glossaries for different subjects were posted on the school intranet. There were also theme-based vocabulary posters monthly and English crossword puzzles to help students build their vocabulary. The Vocabulary quiz for all forms and the Self-directed English Learning Award Scheme was continued. At the end of the term, most of them were able to complete the English Passport by meeting the requirements set in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Improvements in student performance were cleary evident when compared with the previous year.

In addition to this, our school completed award schemes namely SportACT and SportFIT and was given an Active School Award. In SportACT, the number of students awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze Prizes were 362, 79 and 77 respectively. While in SportFIT, the number of students awarded the Gold, Silver and Bronze Prizes were 243, 165 and 66 respectively.

    16.2 Students’ performance in sports

In the year 08-09, our students participated in eight Hong Kong inter-school sports competitions including athletics, swimming, basketball, football, handball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. Our students demonstrated outstanding performance in the competitions. The Girls Group won the 3rd runner-up in the overall result. In group events, 15 groups were able to enter the top eight positions in different competitions, among which 1 was champion, 4 were 1st runners-up, 3 were 2nd runners-up and 2 were 3rd runners-up.
