Andrew Rasiej-Commencement Speaker

Andrew Rasiej is a civic and social entrepreneur, a technology strategist, and the founder of Personal Democracy Media, which produces the Personal Democracy Forum and other events about the intersection of technology and politics. He is also the founder of MOUSE.org, which focuses on 21st-century public education, and a co-founder of Mideastwire.com, which translates news and opinion pieces from Arabic and Farsi into English.

In addition, Rasiej is chairman of the NY Tech Meetup, a 40,000-member group of technologists, venture funders, and marketers who represent start-up and mature companies that are using technology to transform themselves, New York City, and the world.

In 2012, Rasiej spoke at Roosevelt House, the Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, about how technology and new media are affecting the political landscape-and, in particular, how they were shaping that year's election.

Rasiej is a graduate of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.

Twyla Tharp-Honorary Doctor 0/ Humane Letters

World-renowned choreographer Twyla Tharp founded her dance company, Twyla Tharp Dance, in 1965-two years after graduating from Barnard College-and since then has choreographed more than 150 works. Her dances are known for creativity, wit, and technical precision coup led with a streetwise nonchalance. By combining different forms of movement- such as jazz, ballet, and her own extraordinarily innovative inventions-Tharp has expanded the boundaries of ballet and modern dance.

In addition to choreographing for her own company, Tharp has created dances for more than a dozen major troupes including American Bailet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Martha Graham Dance Company, New York City Ballet, and the Royal Ballet. Among the numerous honors she has received are a Tony Award, two Emmy Awards, 19 honorary doctorates, and a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Fellowship (a "genius grant").

Tharp's first publicly performed work, a 1 O-minute dance tided Tank Dive, made its debut at Hunter, in a small theater space within the College's Art Department. Tharp has said that the title reflected her belief that the chance of becoming a successful choreographer is about equal to that of successfully diving from a great height into a thimbleful of water.

Welcorpe to your future! Today you receive your degrees from Hunter Col­lege, which bestows membership in our Alumni Association. When I gradu­

ated, 12 years ago, I thought I had taken advantage of all Hunter had to offer and I was now on my own. I was so wrong! I was invited back to the College as an alumnus and was happily surprised to discover a vibrant, active, multi­generational Alumni Association. Thanks to my membership in the Associa­tion, I have not only gained the satisfaction of giving back to the College, but

I have also made new friends and colleagues who have greatly entiched my life. It is now my honor to invite each of you to join the Alumni Association and its grand tradition of serving the College and supporting one another - a tradition that has continued since the Association's founding in 1872.

The caps, gowns, and hoods worn by participants in these exercises are patterned after the attire of monks in the Middle Ages. Those who have earned the bachelor's degree wear a gown with a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, intricate shirring across the shoulders and back and long, pointed sleeves. The holder of the master's degree wears a similar gown, but the sleeve is square and closed at the end with the wearer's forearm coming through a slit near the elbow. Those possessing the doctor's degree wear gowns having broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the full, round, open sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color of the field of learning represented by the degree.

The hoods, over the shoulders and down the backs of the faculty, reveal the degrees and institutions of the wearers.

The velvet binding or edging is distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains. The lining of the hood, in silk, gives the color or colors of the institution granting the degree. The shortest hood is the bachelor's; the longest and the broadest is the doctor's; and the master's is midway between these in size. There is much duplication in the colors of the colleges; therefore, they will be left unidentified. However, there is a standard color for the subjects.

Historical Note

The Mace carried by the Grand Marshall, who leads the Processional and Recessional, was presented to the College by the Alumni Association at the ceremony marking the Centennial of Hunter College in 1970. It is used each year at Commencement.
