Even as an RP student, Merissa played an active role in Singapore’s theatre scene, freelancing as a technical theatre practitioner. The recipient of the National Arts Council Arts Scholarship (Undergraduate) 2018 is currently pursuing further studies towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Design and Production) at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne.
My course helped kickstart my journey in the arts, giving me a holistic understanding of arts management, while simultaneously stressing the importance of collaboration and inter-disciplinary concepts. With such a strong footing, I was able to hit the ground running upon graduation. It has allowed me to further my practice and interests in all creative, managerial and technical aspects of the arts.”

ACHIEVEMENTS
Multisensory Theatre Speaks to a Special Needs AudienceCreated for audience with diverse needs and in collaboration with the Drama Interest Group, Riley’s Rain was the fifth multisensory performance staged by our students and staff from the Diploma in Arts & Theatre Management (DATM).
In the 2019 instalment, DATM students started off performing at the TRCC Blackbox, before bringing the performance to The Arts House (Singapore) and across the causeway to Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The multisensory performances were created for the audience to interact in an immersive environment comprising purposefully-designed sets, costumes, props, lights, and sound. Each performance was carefully crafted with soft transitions into a sensory space that was built from an audience-centric dramaturgy.
Through the production, our students gained awareness of arts inclusivity and understood the need for empathy when staging meaningful performances.

Four students from the Diploma in Game Design (DGD) have developed ‘Resist’, a game which educates people about drug abuse, for Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB).
Targeted at youths between the age of 13 and 17, ‘Resist’ is an interactive and engaging game that educates players about the consequences and harmfulness of drug abuse, thus encouraging them to lead a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Game players collect rewards by defeating drug monsters and their sinister side effects.
150 copies of the game have been produced and progressively distributed to local schools and community partners.
CNB Enlists DGD’s ‘Resist’ to Help Kids Get the Gist of Drug Danger
Six students from the Diploma in Design for User Experience (DDUX) and Diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering snagged the Lee Hsien Loong Interactive Digital Media Smart Nation Award in 2018 for a collaboration with the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS).
“CHIKIT” Checks Out with LHL Award
Their project, “CHIKIT”, comprises two devices which are a boon for caregivers. Wearable tracking device Pachi serves as a fidget device for its user and is able to detect falls, alerting caregivers through its app. The other device, home monitor “Hochi”, plays music and voice recordings and contains a built-in camera which allows caregivers to keep an eye on things.

RP’s Young Creators Get Support for FilmsThe Diploma in Media Production & Design (DMPD) students have found an avenue to bring their ideas to life on film — through the Infocomm Media Development Authority’s Young Creators Project.
This talent development initiative has given our students funding support, mentorship by industry experts and access to production resources such as filming equipment, studio facilities and props in the last three years.
With these at hand, our DMPD students have produced eight short films for Mediacorp Toggle. From BGR woes and the stress of the paper chase, to themes such as bullying and the loss of childhood friendships, these stories speak to the hearts of all Singaporean youths.

Accolades Add Up for Math Pop Band FXTRT When Diploma in Sonic Arts students Aik Ming, Kadir and James got together, math pop band FXTRT (pronounced ‘foxtrot’) was conceived and the equation was made complete when coursemate Jack joined the group later.
Palette, their debut EP recorded and mixed at RP in 2016 as an extension of their Final Year Production, quickly won them fans. They released a sophomore EP and single in the following year and in the same year, they were invited to perform at Baybeats.
They haven’t missed a beat since. From festival gigs such as *Scape Confessions and Esplanade’s All Things New 2018, to opening for Philippines math rock band tide/edit, FXTRT has been toting up tributes. Their brand is gaining traction, with features in local editorials like JUICE, Bandwagon and Ignite Music Festival, as well as the international Pitchopsticks, and podcasts from Mathcore Index.
Get caught in the hype too! Catch @fxtrtband on Bandcamp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Spotify and Soundcloud!

OVERSEAS TRIPSGoing Global, Staying Local
Hitting the High Road to Bring High Tech to Cultural Arts
STA believes in exposing our students to global trends through meaningful and memorable cross-cultural exchanges.
This is why we regularly organise a variety of overseas trips for our students, bringing them to countries around Asia and beyond. These have proven to be enriching opportunities for learning and our students come back with an adventure of a lifetime!
A testimonial from Seetoh Wei Tung, a Year 3 Diploma in Game Design student provides insight on how impactful these trips can be for students. He shares, “The Tokyo trip that I went on really opened my eyes to how Japanese game companies operate. Cyber-Connect 2, for example, let their interns work on their main video game titles, not just on their other experimental projects. It is a bold move and shows how much faith the company has in all of their employees, and it inspires me to do more in my upcoming internship programme.”
RP students headed up to Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University for a cultural exchange with a difference — they were aiming to give traditional art forms a modern spin, to appeal to the millennial generation. As part of the Temasek Foundation International – Specialists’ Community Action & Leadership Exchange (TFI SCALE) initiative, our youth leaders collaborated with their Thai counterparts to propose innovative, technology-enabled updates to traditional art forms, and came back with broadened minds, new ideas and new friends.
15
Serving with One Heart
One Heart brings local and international polytechnic students together in RP for a two-day programme that reaches out to the community. Our STA students took the lead in conceptualising a tote-bag making activity for participants, who also joined in empathy activities and integration talks. Befriending old folks from three Care Corner Senior Activity Centres in Toa Payoh, these students escorted their senior companions to the Giant Hypermarket at Tampines, where the tote bags were put to good use along with the $50 vouchers that were gifted to each elderly beneficiary.
Every year, RP is proud to work with the National Population Talent Division on a local service-learning project.
