The Michigan Recital Project Featuring alumna Emily Marvosh
8 p.m., Tuesday, October 1
Emily Marvosh, contralto, has been gaining recognition for her “flexible technique and ripe color,” and “smooth, apparently effortless vocal display.” Following her solo debut at Boston’s Symphony Hall in 2011, she has been a frequent soloist with the Handel and Haydn Society, as well as Opera Boston, Boston Lyric Opera, and numerous
appearances with East Coast Orchestras. She is the guiding force behind the Michigan Recital Project and its focus on Michigan composers and musicians. Ms. Marvosh is the 2013 American Prize in Vocal Performance winner in the professional art song division.
The Michigan Recital Project includes artists Margot Rood, soprano, Joseph Turbessi, piano, and Tess Miller, flute, along with Ms. Marvosh performing pieces by predominately Michigan composers. The evening’s concert will include performances of four world premiere compositions: “Ode to Lake Michigan” by CMU alumnus Philip Rice, “How Still the Garden Seems” by Scott J. Ordway, “The Laughter and the Music” by CMU Assistant Professor of Music Theory/Composition Scott R. Harding, and “The Death of Minnehaha” by Mary Montgomery Koppel. Featured Michigan composers include Philip Rice, William Bolcom, Scott R. Harding and Catherine McMichael. Scott R. Harding

Arabesque WindsWoodwind Quintet8 p.m. , Tuesday, November 26
R e c o g n i z e d for their fresh, energetic, and i n t e r a c t i v e performances, the Arabesque Winds were awarded the
Grand Prize at the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition in what the judges described as “an astounding performance” at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. At a recent performance at the Kennedy Center, the ensemble “played with skill and depth beyond their years,” (Washington Post) “but it was the unanimity of their ensemble phrasing that took the breath away.”

Mr. Weeks has sung with opera companies including the Cincinnati Opera, Florentine Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Kentucky Opera, Nevada Opera, and San Francisco’s Western Opera Theater among others. As a concert performer, he has performed with the orchestras of Houston, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and the Columbus Symphony.

Tiberi will serve both as guest clinician and featured soloist for Jazz Weekend XLI. Tiberi’s performance concludes Jazz Weekend that evening—Friday, February 7, 2014—at 8 p.m. in Plachta Auditorium.
Jazz Weekend was founded in 1972 by the late Jack Saunders. He was Director of The Chippewa Marching Band, Coordinator of Jazz Studies, Professor of Horn, Instrumental Area Coordinator and Founder/Director of Jazz Lab 1. He retired after 37 years of teaching in 2000.
With the creation of Jazz Lab 1 and Jazz Weekend, Professor Saunders laid the foundation for jazz education and music at CMU through which his memory lives on.
Frank Tiberi, a legendary reed section all-star and band leader, began clarinet study at age 8; started playing professionally at 13; self-taught on flute; and studied bassoon with the renowned Sol Schoenbach of the Philadelphia Orchestra. While still a young man Tiberi toured with Bob Chester, BennyGoodman and Urbie Green, played with Dizzy Gillespie, and
worked as a doubler in many Broadway musical shows before settling into the illustrious “Four Brothers” sound (three tenors and baritone) reed section of the Woody Herman Band in 1969. Once there, he became a featured soloist, section leader, arranger, music director and ultimately leader of the Herman Band in 1987.
