Kathy Naassan is Vice President of Space and Defense Operations with ARES Corporation, a technology and engineering services "rm in Albuquerque that conducts so$ware design, risk analysis, project management, facility and equipment design, and system engineering for the defense, aerospace, chemical, and energy industries.

Previously, she has been a consultant with PLG Inc., Yankee Engineering Services, and Ogden Energy and Environment Services. She also was an engineer with Applied Technology Associates, Correa Enterprises Inc., Rockwell International, and New Mexico Engineering Research Institute.

In addition to her degree from UNM, she holds an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mike Emerson is Senior Vice President of Space and Defense Operations with ARES Corporation in Albuquerque. Mike established, with Kathy, the Albuquerque o#ce for ARES in 1997 and oversees operations nationally, including those in Houston; Huntsville, Ohio; Colorado, and Washington, D.C. From 2010 to 2012, he served as Vice President of Strategic Business Services at New Mexico Community Capital, a local venture capital "rm focused on economic development.

He is the chair of the Mechanical Engineering Advisory Council at the UNM School of Engineering. He also serves on the National Advisory Board for the Tamarind Institute. He served on the UNM Foundation Board of Trustees and the Anderson School of Management Foundation Board of Directors. In addition to his UNM degree, he holds an M.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Washington.

Matthew Rush knew he wanted to be an engineer since middle school. Always excelling in math and science, he took an early interest in engineering, despite coming from a modest background. His father is a butcher, but his mother is an art teacher, which contributed to his love of the aesthetic side of engineering design.

He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. He enjoyed mechanical engineering, but soon developed an interest in materials science and

biology. His real engineering passion is in biomedical applications. He even considered going to medical school before deciding to pursue his graduate studies in biomedical engineering.

Matthew researches tissue engineering — speci"cally heart valve tissue — with Assistant Professor of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Elizabeth Dirk at the Center for Biomedical Engineering.

“I love the idea of taking cells from tissues and having them repair themselves,” he said.

Matthew is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in engineering, continuing his research on the e%ect of cell fate due to surface adhesion. !is month, he will begin a position at Los Alamos National Laboratory at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnology.

Student Speakers

Alan Kuntz is earning his undergraduate degree in computer science, but to look at his accomplishments, one might think he is already a graduate student.

He has been very active in research, working with Assistant Professor of Computer Science Lydia Tapia on molecular aggregation simulation and analysis. !is year, he was a "nalist in the 2014 Computing Research Association Undergraduate Researcher Award competition. In 2013, he received an honorable mention in the competition.

Getting so much research experience was an unexpected bene"t of his time at UNM. “I got a taste of research and paper writing, and I enjoyed it very much,” Alan said. “It’s de"nitely in&uenced my decision to go to graduate school.”

Alan will attend the University of North Carolina to pursue his Ph.D. in computer science in the fall, and this summer, he will begin research there in robotics. His career goal is to continue doing research at the university level.

George E. Breece Award!e George E. Breece Award was established in 1921 to honor the UNM School of Engineering senior with the highest grade point average from each graduating class. !e recipients of this award consistently have grade point averages higher than 4.0, re&ecting a majority of A+ grades throughout their undergraduate courses.

Xin GaoB.S., Mechanical Engineering, '14

Xin Gao isn’t your typical UNM engineering undergraduate student. For one thing, he grew up in Beijing, China, and has been in the United States for only a few years. Secondly, he already holds an engineering degree from a Chinese university, but in ship engineering.

Although he found he didn’t like ship engineering soon a$er he got into the major, there was no way for a student to change a major in China just because he or she didn’t enjoy it.

Xin came to the United States with his wife. Still having an interest in engineering, Xin ultimately decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, which was his favorite major.

“A$er that, I just fell in love with UNM,” he said.

He was so eager to pursue his degree that he usually took at least 16 credit hours per semester, which le$ him little time for research or extracurricular activities. However, perhaps the most important thing he has learned has not come from the classroom.

“!e technical skills I learned here are important, but something much more important than technical knowledge is what I learned about how crucial democracy and freedom of speech are,” he said.

Xin said the two things he’s enjoyed the most about living in the United States have been the beautiful environment of New Mexico and appreciating the country’s Constitution.

“!e Constitution is not perfect, but it is pretty close to perfect. !e Constitution is absolutely a great accomplishment in human history created by great men,” he said.

Xin is undecided on his future plans a$er graduation. !ey could include graduate school, but also likely will include advocating for democracy — both here and in his home country.

“Traveling to the U.S. changed my life. It’s a whole new world for me,” he said. “If I have the chance, I want to "ght for democracy.”

Convocation Traditions !roughout their long and proud history, universities have retained and cherished strong ties to their ceremonial roots. When English universities were taking form in the twel$h and thirteenth centuries, scholars were also clerics. !ey adopted robes similar to those of their monastic orders. Caps were a necessity in the dra$y buildings and copes, or capes with hoods attached, were needed for warmth.

School of Engineering Convocation !e School of Engineering Convocation pays tribute to the history and traditions of graduations throughout the ages. !e bachelor’s gown is red, has long sleeves, and is worn closed. !e master’s and doctor’s gowns are black. !e cap, originally round, is now a square mortarboard and is the same for all degrees. Caps are traditionally black with a long tassel fastened to the mid-point. !e tassel is worn on the right side until the degree has been conferred; it is then worn on the le$. !e hood indicates the type of degree and the o#cial color or colors of the university conferring the degree. For example, the color orange represents engineering, and that color is used on the velvet binding or edging of the hood. !e o#cial University of New Mexico colors are cherry and silver, so the hood is lined with silver gray with a chevron of cherry red.

!e Convocation begins and ends with a colorful academic procession, led by a sta% member carrying a banner in front of the School of Engineering degree candidates. !e faculty marshal is usually selected from School of Engineering emeritus faculty, an honorary title for retired full-time faculty. !e faculty marshal carries a mace or ceremonial sta% and leads the platform party, composed of School of Engineering academic leadership, UNM regents and dignitaries, and convocation speakers.

!e mace traces its origins to a medieval weapon and was later carried before kings and high church o#cials as a ceremonial emblem of authority. !e UNM Engineering mace was designed by Dean Joseph L. Cecchi and constructed in 2003 by engineering sta% member Penn Davis. !e mace handle is connected to a machined aluminum cube with wood panels inscribed with the University Seal and “!e School of Engineering 1906,” the year the School was founded. !e mace is crowned by a wooden sphere.

School of Engineering HistoryEngineering instruction at the University of New Mexico has a rich tradition, beginning in 1906, with four-year programs in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, and Mining Engineering. !e "rst Bachelor of Science degree was awarded in June 1912. By 1916, enrollment was at 37 with two or three graduates each year. In 1947, the Department of Chemical Engineering was established, and in 1972 it expanded to the Department of Chemical and Nuclear Engineering. Computer Science courses were initially o%ered in the Mathematics Department and in 1976, the Computer Science Department was established. With the addition of Computer Engineering to the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1979, the present-day complement of academic departments was in place.

!is fall, the UNM School of Engineering enrolled over 2,100 students in nine undergraduate degree programs and over 700 students in more than a dozen graduate degree programs. !ese degrees are o%ered through the School’s "ve academic departments and, increasingly, through interdisciplinary and interdepartmental programs. Research is integrated into each degree program in an environment that fosters teamwork, cultural and intellectual diversity, a strong sense of public responsibility, and lifelong learning. An exceptionally active research faculty work in critical and cutting-edge areas, collaborating within UNM and with other universities, the national laboratories, and industry to develop innovative solutions for societal challenges.
