The NBCT specializationis uniquely scheduled to align the NBPTSportfolio submission dates and serves asthe thesis project for the MAT degree.

Master of Education in Best Practices ODesigned for the student committed tocompleting the requirements for acredential in multiple or single subject inthe state of California with a graduate

degree specializing in Best Practices.Courses for this degree meet theCommission on Teacher Credentialing(CTC) requirements for a preliminarycredential and a master’s degree. Itcombines theory and practice to driveassessment and reflection as the basis forsound instructional decision making.

Master of Education Specializing in Cross-Cultural Teaching OThis degree is for students who arecommitted to being instructional leadersin the K-12 setting, and geared toproviding candidates with the knowledgeand skills to effectively teach theincreasingly diverse students in oursociety. Courses meet the Commission onTeacher Credentialing (CTC)requirements for a preliminary credentialas well as meet the requirements for amaster’s degree. The internship optionprovides valuable classroom experienceand the opportunity to put theory intoreal-life practice.

National University is able topartner with districts to combine ateacher’s work in the Induction programwith the University’s requirements for amaster’s degree. Currently offered inoffsite cohorts only, this programcombines the work completed in thepreliminary teaching credential, thedistrict induction program, and theProfessional Clear SB2042 credentialrequirements, with a particular focus onpreparing teachers for National BoardCertification.

Master of Science in Applied School Leadership (Offered in partnership with Santa Clara

County Office of Education [SCCOE]) Thisprogram is offered in collaboration withthe SCCOE “Leaders in EducationalAdministration Program” (L.E.A.P), andis comprised of six courses leading to thePreliminary Administrative Services (Tier I) Credential. Students must alsotake an additional six required NationalUniversity courses for the completion ofthis degree.

Master of Science in Educational Administration OIn this program, students will gainexpertise in matters related toeducational leadership and develop thecapabilities and personal characteristicsessential for efficient schooladministration. This degree can becompleted with or without a credentialoption for those pursuing a career in thenonpublic education sector.

Master of Science in Educational CounselingThe Master of Science in EducationalCounseling is aligned with nationalstandards and prepares students for theposition of school counselor. Graduates ofthis program generally seek employmentas school counselors in K-12 schooldistricts and must hold a PPSC credentialfor public school employment.

Master of Science in InstructionalLeadership/NBCT ODeveloping leadership skills for studentsinterested in becoming a school leader or administrator, this degree combines the five National Board CertifiedTeaching (NBCT) courses with fiveleadership courses from the EducationalAdministration program. Development of the NBCT portfolio serves as the thesisproject. Adding three more courses withinseven years may earn the student apreliminary administrator license.

Master of Science in School PsychologyThis program is aligned with nationalstandards and prepares students for theposition of school psychologist. Graduates

of this program generally seekemployment as a school psychologist inK-12 school districts and must hold aPPSP credential for public schoolemployment.

Master of Science in Special Education The Master of Science in SpecialEducation is designed for educators andother professionals who want to becomeknowledgeable about educational learningproblems and teaching strategies toenhance student performance.

In this program students build expertisein educational learning difficulties andlearn new methodologies to enhancestudent performance.

Master of Science in Special Education – Emphasis in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing OThis degree is designed for educators andother professionals who want to becomeknowledgeable about educational learningchallenges and teaching strategies toenhance performance of students who aredeaf and hard of hearing.

Special Education Internships

The University Internship credentialprograms provide opportunities forstudents to assume the responsibilities offull-time “teachers of record” whilecompleting the credential courseworkrequired for their Level I EducationSpecialist preparation program. Internsmust have an offer of employment froman approved school district or non-publicschool that either has, or is willing toenter into, a partnership agreement withNational University. Teacher Education Credential ProgramsIn these programs, you can earn thespecific credential you need for variousteaching environments. Earn a multiplesubject credential to teach in a self-contained classroom, typically in gradesK-12. The single subject credentialauthorized the holder to teach in adepartmentalized situation, typically at the junior high or high school level.The SB2042 multiple subjects credentialand the single subject credential includean authorization to teach Englishlanguage learners both in the generaleducation classroom and in designatedclasses. California Reading Certificate OThe California Reading Certificateauthorizes the holder to assess studentreading and provide reading instruction inresponse to those assessments. ReadingCertificate holders are also authorized to develop, implement, and adapt thereading content curriculum and assistclassroom teachers in these areas.

Early Childhood Education Certificate OThis four-course program is designed togive students the teaching experiencenecessary to meet the unique needs ofchildren from birth to age 8.

Early Childhood Special Education Certificate OFor individuals who have completedLevel II coursework in special educationand hold a Professional SpecialistCredential, Mild/Moderate orModerate/Severe disabilities,completion of the certificate extendsteaching authorization from birththrough age 22.

Educational Technology Certificate OThis will develop expertise in designingand conducting technology-facilitatedinstruction in K-12 technologycoordination, site administration, home

school and virtual school instruction, andonline instruction in higher education.

National Board Certified TeacherLeadership Certificate OThis certificate is designed for anyteacher who may already have a master’sdegree, but would benefit by earninggraduate credit for five NBCT coursesthat support them as they explore anddevelop the NBCT portfolio at any level:exploration only, as a pre-candidate, active candidate, or renewal candidate.National Board Certification servesteachers in K-12 schools and in nearly allsubject areas.
