1.Aims,Outcomes&Assessment1.1.OverallAimsScientistswithskillsandknowledgetoworkinecologyandevolutionareneededinthistimeofglobalecologicalchange.Thisprogrammeaimstoproducesuchscientists,whocangoontoPhDresearchorjobsconcerningthenaturalenvironment.Therewillbeanemphasisonlearningaboutresearchthroughpracticalapplication,andpersonalexperienceoftheresearchprocess.Theprogrammewillenableyouto:

• Developasoundknowledge-baseinthefieldsstudied,andkeytransferableskillsintheareasof:communication,numeracy,informationtechnology,workingwithothers,problemsolving,timeandtaskmanagement

• Developaportfolioofexperimentalskillsandpracticaltechniques,andtherebyprovideyouwiththeconfidencetotacklemoreextendedresearchstudies,perhapsviaaPhD

1.2.LearningoutcomesThisprogrammewillteachtheapplicationofgoodscientificprinciplesinthecontextofindependentandinnovativethought.Youwillbeexpectedtoachieveanadvanced,inter-disciplinaryunderstandingoftechniquesandmethodologiesapplicabletothefieldsofecologyandevolutionarybiology,andanappreciationofthecurrentresearchissueswhicharedrivingthescienceforward.Inparticular,youshouldbeabletodemonstrate:

1.3.Teaching,learningandassessmentstrategiesThemodulesmakinguptheprogrammewillbetaughtinblocksoftwoweeks,withasubsequentweeklongstudybreaktouseforindependentlearningandfulfillingtherequirementsofcontinuousassessmentexercises.Mostmodulescompriselecturesduringthemorningofeachdayandthentheafternoonsarededicatedtoseminars,breakoutdiscussiongroups,workshops,andlaboratoryorcomputer-basedpracticals.MuchofthetheorygleanedfromformalteachingduringthemodulesinSemesterAwillbeplacedin'real'contextontheresidentialfieldcourseinBorneo,whichwillcomprisesitevisits,aswellasmanagementandconservationpresentationsfrompractitionersandstakeholders.Practicalskillswillbelearnedfromactivitiesassociatedwithfieldtrips(day-long)andinmore-extensivelaboratorysessions,associatedwiththemodules.Thistraininginpracticalskillswillbuildtowardsthecompletionofasubstantiveresearchproject,whichshouldcoalescefromthetheoretical,practicalandtransferableskills.OutlineofassessmentfortheawardofMScCoursework(50%offinalgrade):Taughtmoduleswillbeassessedusingavarietyofassessmentmethods(reports,essays,practicals,presentations,MCQs).Eachmoduleisweightedat8.33%ofthefinalassessmentload.Dissertation(50%offinalgrade):Theexaminationoftheresearchprojectisviaathesis(100%).Alltaughtmodulesandthedissertationmustbepassedat50%forawardoftheMSc.

2.ProgrammeStructureTheprogrammeisstructuredtoallowlogicalprogressionthroughthevariousmodules.InSemesterA,youwilltakefourtwo-weekmodules(4x15credits).InSemesterBstudentstakeonefurthertwo-weekmodule(15credits)andthefieldcoursetoBorneo(15credits).Fortheremainderoftheprogrammeyouwillbeengagedinacutting-edgeresearchproject(90credits),apieceofindependentandnovelresearchthatshoulddrawuponmanyoftheaspectstaughtandtheskillsexperienced.Youareencouragedtousetheindependentstudytimetoengagewithcurrentresearchersinlabs,orvolunteerforfieldworkassistance,therebyexposingyourselftotheday-to-dayexperienceoftheresearchenvironment.Youareencouragedtoattendlabmeetingsalsoandgainafullunderstandingofthebreadthofresearchavailablebeforemakingachoiceforyourownspecificproject.
