JEANNETTE LAJEUNESSE ZINGG Co-Artistic Director and Choreographer, Opera Atelier Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg has choreographed and performed in 70+ productions since creating the company with Marshall Pynkoski, Co-Artistic Director and Production Director, in 1985. Her training took place in Toronto, Paris, France, London, England and in Copenhagen, Denmark. In her role as choreographer and dancer, Jeannette Lajeunesse Zingg has introduced modern audiences to the beauty of 17 th , 18 th and 19 th century dance forms. Opera Atelier’s productions, based in Toronto at the Elgin Theatre, have travelled to New York, Cleveland, the Houston Grand Opera, the BBC Proms in London, England, the Royal Opera House at Versailles, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Japan and Korea. She played the lead in Rhombus Media’s production of Manuel De Falla’s “Master Peter’s Puppet Show”. Also for Rhombus, Jeannette choreographed the dance ensembles for the Artists of Atelier Ballet, the Dutch National Ballet and the Scapino Ballet of Rotterdam, and starred opposite Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in “The Sorceress.” She has revived important historical dance works by Handel, Mozart, Lully and Rameau, in collaboration with world-class conductors including Andrew Parrott, Marc Minkowski and David Fallis. She has choreographed and performed for the Handel Festival in Halle, Germany and the Salzburg Festival in Austria. Most recently she had her La Scala Milan choreographic debut. INSTRUCTORS VANESSA HARWOOD O.C. Ms. Harwood trained at The National Ballet School graduating in 1964. She joined the National Ballet of Canada in 1965 and was a principal dancer from 1970 until 1987. She was best known for her performances as leading ballerina in Swan Lake, Coppelia, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella, Nutcracker, Don Quixote, La Fille Mal Gardée, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, Dying Swan, Solitaire, and Elite Syncopations. She has had many illustrious dance partners, including Rudolf Nureyev, Alexander Godunov, Patrick Bissell, Frank Augustyn, Stephen Jeffries, and Gary Norman. She coached bronze medal 1988 World and Olympic Ice Dance Champions, Tracy Wilson and Robert McCall. Ms Harwood was Artistic Director of Balletto Classicco from 1989 to 1993. She was honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984. In 2002 she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Jubilee Medal, and received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She has also photographed dance and has had her work published in the International Dance Magazine, the Toronto Star, Now Magazine, and for programs for the Moving Pictures Festival. Instruction is provided by professional dancers in a caring, creative atmosphere with convenient class schedules. Many students have gone on to pursue further professional training with Canada’s National Ballet School, School of American Ballet, Ryerson University Dance Department, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and others. Our Graduates: Students who have trained at the School of Atelier Ballet have gone on to dance with companies such as Opera Atelier’s Artists of Atelier Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada and Stratford Festival. Others have become teachers of ballet, or have applied their training to studies in music, art history, and drama. This year, the School of Atelier Ballet Summer Dance Intensive will run for three weeks. Classes will be offered in ballet, baroque dance, flamenco, repertoire, and pas de deux*. The course will run from June 27 – July 16, Monday to Saturday, 2pm – 5pm. There will be an in-studio presentation of repertoire on Saturday, July 16 at 4pm. The course fee is $255 for three weeks, payment due May 11, 2016. Please see reverse for calendar and full schedule. We are thrilled to welcome again Vanessa Harwood, longtime principal dancer with The National Ballet of Canada, Edward Tracz, Artist of Atelier Ballet, and Margarita Rigó as guest teachers this summer. A minimum level of Intermediate technical ability is ideal for this program. *Pas de deux for selected students only, dependent on technical ability and physical fitness. EDWARD TRACZ Edward Tracz began his professional dance career with Opera Atelier and the National Ballet of Canada simultaneously. Highlghts with the National Ballet of Canada include the world premiere of James Kudelka’s Nutcracker, and John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet. Mr. Tracz joined Orlando Ballet as a principal dancer, where his roles included Gypsy King in Don Quixote, Prince in The Nutcracker, and Paris in Romeo and Juliet. He continues as a much valued dancer with Opera Atelier, where highlights include performances at the Royal Opera House at the Palace of Versailles, France, and the Salzburg Festival, Austria. Edward Tracz is also a busy and dedicated teacher. Lukas Malkowski and Rebecca Moranis MARGARITA MARÍA RIGÓ MARGARITA MARÍA RIGÓ began her flamenco career in Granada, Spain at the ‘Carmen de las Cuevas’ flamenco school. Upon returning to Toronto she enrolled at the Academy of Spanish Dance and has been training in flamenco and classical Spanish dance ever since. Her professional flamenco career began dancing with the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company. She was part of the 2006 ‘Dusk Dances’ summer tour and has performed with flamenco dance company Azucar, Canela y Clavo based in Medellin, Columbia. She has also performed with Toronto based theatre groups Crisalida and Nuevo Teatro. We are delighted to have Margarita Maria once again as an honoured guest teacher for our summer program.
