At UCSI University’s School of Architecture and Built Environment, we believe that our future designers and thinkers seek liveability and right livelihood, inclusiveness, ethical sustainability, environmental and social responsiveness, conviviality and cultural robustness in our built environments. The underlying premise of our education is humanistic, communal and embedded in user-centric concerns; and in the best of examples, our teaching approaches combine abstract theory with concrete practices.

Our students frequently work alongside revered experts on undergraduate projects that address global challenges — the result of the School’s vast partnership with renowned architects both local and international. They test their knowledge and skills against their peers in the industry. And they enjoy many opportunities to explore and hone their craft. On top of eye-opening fieldworks, our students enjoy two months of Co-Operative placement for every year of study. With more than 4,000 companies in the list of UCSI’s Co-Op partners, this offers students the opportunity to pursuetheir internship with some of the most prestigious namesin the industry.

Noted for its impressive awards and accolades, the School has experienced great success but none greater than that of its students. Some have won top awards in national and international competitions. Some have gone on to top architecture firms. And some are recognised for their contributions to the community. For many, their own success story begins long before graduation.

We are as good as the dedicated and driven students who enrol in it. At the forefront of their disciplines are our faculty members, who had extensive publication and great impact on the heritage sustainability of Malaysia’s architecture. By bringing their experiences into the classroom, our academics cater to an exhilarating learning environment and learners will expand their skills and capabilities as they balance academic mastery with industrial application.

We know that the creation of architecture requires passion, intelligence and a broad range of skills — from leadership and communication to technical know-how. So we provide our students with the strongest foundations. This is simply the microcosm of a culture that nurtures excellence — one that you will experience, first-hand.

At UCSI University, we believe that creativity, curiosity and strong intellectual grounding are fundamental aspects of an architectural education. Our innovative design programme, while addressing specific issues on sustainability, also focuses on pertinent issues that surface as a result of architecture and its impact on existing built and natural environments. This philosophy underpins every aspect of the School’s teaching and research activities. As students, you will thrive as you develop a sense of both breadth and depth through courses infused with market-driven software. These courses — from building construction and technology to the history of architecture — will equip you with creative design and practical skills. You will also benefit from yearly visits to architectural sites in Asia — Bali, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Korea, Tokyo and Beijing, for example — that complements your learning experience. Here, you join a community of students and lecturers who are passionate about architecture and share an environmental commitment. As a graduate, you will leave with a desire to make a positive contribution to the lives of people and the environments in which they live.

UCSI’s Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Architecture programme is a pre-professional course that is accredited by Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM) which exempts graduates from the LAM Part 1 Professional Examination.

NOTABLE ACADEMICIANS

MERGING THE BEST OFEDUCATION WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

UCSI is home to some of Malaysia’s foremost academics. They are at the forefront of their respective fields and their interdisciplinary engagement fosters the cross-fertilisation of ideas on campus. The following are a few of UCSI’s many thinkers who have made a huge contribution to academia, the industry and society.

IR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR DR JIMMY MOK VEE HOONGDean, Faculty of Engineering, Technology and Built Environment

PhD Microwave Engineering (UMIST) • BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering

A professional in his field, Ir Associate Professor Dr Jimmy is a registered Professional Engineer (Ir) in the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM) and a registered Chartered Engineer (CEng) of the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET), United Kingdom.

UCSI students transformed a run-down shop lot into a community centre that houses a children’s library, a play centre and a homestay. The project was the result of a collaboration between architecture students from UCSI and Taiwan’s Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU). The students were guided by two renowned architects from Taiwan who are visiting professors of UCSI, Professor Huang Sheng-Yuan and Dr Chen Xuang-Cheng. The project caught the attention of QS Reimagining Education Star Awards 2015 and was one of the shortlisted innovations around the world.

When Malaysia’s history of leprosy faces the threat of being forgotten, UCSI students were challenged to create insightful and innovative designs to temporarily convert Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement — fondly also known as the Valley of Hope and the world’s second largest leprosarium heritage — Council Hall’s first floor into a story museum, a place to commemorate the history of the Settlement.

PROFESSOR DR MOHD TAJUDDIN BIN MOHD RASDIProfessor, School of Architecture and Built Environment

PhD Architecture (Edinburgh) • March (Wisconsin) • BSc Architecture (Wisconsin)

Professor Tajuddin is a renowned academic who specialises in the theory and history of architecture. He is an authority in national architectural identity, Islamic architecture, the framework of early Western modernist architecture and mosque design. He has published over 60 books to date and is frequently sought for comment by the Malaysian media.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AR CHIA LIN LINHead of School, School of Architecture and Built Environment

MEnvSc (UPM) • BArch (USM) • BSc Housing, Building and Planning

At UCSI’s School of Architecture and Built Environment, we are always actively engaging industry and academic partners to work on live projects and have them actively input into the University’s design studio. We constantly invite various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as guest speakers to enhance the student’s learning experience.

HIJJAS KASTURIFounder and Principal Director of Hijjas Kasturi Associates Sdn

Huang worked in Eric Owen Moss Architects as a Project Associate and also taught at North Carolina State University. Fieldoffice Architects received numerous awards since 1998 such as the Far Eastern Design Awards and National Landscape Re-development Award, and is frequently invited to participate in international exhibitions, social and cultural activities.

DR AR CHEN XUAN-CHENGAdjunct Lecturer of Department of Architecture in Chung Yuan Christian University • Directors of the SWEETENEducational Foundation • Curator of THE 201 ART • Architect of Archiblur Lab

Chen's work has allowed him to be a nomad and vacillating practitioner, and therefore margins are not limits but rather the manifestations of thought. Objects can always open up to heterogeneous opposites. Chen takes the point of greatest tension from between these opposites — such as art and architecture, architectural objects and architec-tural installation, or body and perception — to carefully and concretely undertake his art practice. Chen is currently a lecturer in the Department of Architecture at Chung Yuan Christian University and has served as an art consultant and curator for The 201 Art, an architect for Archiblur Lab and a navigator for Interbreeding Field.
