    1st XI Football

This was not a vintage year.We were short on stars but the one thing we never lacked was grit. The team

worked so hard throughout the term and developed into a very close-knit team who never gave up.

A number of games could have gone either way. We should have beaten Ludgrove but we chose that day

not to be at our best and also went down to ten men for the entire second half. We had a very close

game with a good Woodcote side at home when we narrowly lost but we secured a draw in the return

fixture. The last three games brought three convincing victories and we were helped by a selection from

the Under 11 team. This is very exciting for next year.

At the start of the season we were a little naïve in defence and we were undone by opponents with real

pace up front. We soon sorted this out though and the back four of Zakhir ma. , Hopton ma. , Iglesias

and Kim became more and more difficult to break through as the term went on. We started the season

with Boer in goal who was capable of great saves but prone to the odd howler. Maldonado took over

and was also a great shot stopper but a little reluctant to come off his line.

To lose Russell for most of the season was a bitter pill to swallow and left us a little exposed in central

midfield. This was such a shame as it meant that we had to bring Beckwith-Moore in from his preferred

position on the wing. He did become our leading goalscorer, though.Hagg-Davies was incredibly tenacious

on the other wing. Hawkey improved hugely during the season and developed a very good touch. Navarro

moved on to the wing and played in some lovely crosses. We tried several different partnerships up front.

Efemuai has a lot of talent but was never fully fit and Boyo shows great skill but lacks a bit of pace.

TheWall Cup for the best defender was awarded to Iglesias and Beckwith-Moore won the Football Cup.

Team: Maldonado,Zakhir ma., Hopton ma.,Iglesias, Kim, Hagg-Davies, Navarro, Hawkey, Beckwith-Moore

    COMMENT

    “Growth means change and change

involves risk, stepping from the known

    to the unknown.”

Childhood is a voyage of discovery. It should be

about asking questions, learning new things and

taking risks. We must encourage children toopen their eyes to new opportunities without

fear. They have to be prepared to take that first

step into the unknown because this is how they

will learn what they are truly capable of. All the

greatest discoveries have come as a result of

    some level of risk taking.

We must encourage the boys to do exactly this

at school. We must create an environment

where they are encouraged to question, to be

inquisitive,to take a chance. We must challenge

them but more importantly, they must learn to

challenge themselves. It is all to easy to practisethe piano piece one knows well but the only

way to progress is to work on the pieces that

still need to mastered. It looks great if we

complete a page of maths questions with big

red ticks by each one but how much more

valuable would it be to tackle something a

    bit meatier?

We learn so much more about boys when they

can't do something than when they can. That is

the true test of character. This is what our six

qualities are all about. We want to develop that

strength of character that doesn't raise the white

flag when faced with challenge but sees challenge

as an opportunity to learn and to grow.

    Bonfire Night

We had another successful Bonfire Night on the

5th of November. Lots of parents came and were

treated to a warming feast of hot dogs and soup.

Nick Dawson and the gap students had built an

enormous bonfire which burned brilliantly. The fire-

works were better than ever and the bangs at the

end were breathtaking.Thank you so much toeveryone for their generous support of the event

without which it would not be possible.

    Christmas DecoratingDorms

Towards the end of term, the boys spent an

afternoon decorating the dorms. It was a great

fun festive activity and the Upper Cubes now

look like ‘Tinsel Town’.The dorms were judged

by Miss Mitchell (the future Mrs Clibborn). The

     Advent Calendar

To kick off the festive season, the top dorms had a

personalised advent calendar. Each morning a name

was pulled out of a box and that boy opened up

the door for the day.All 12 boys were able to open

up a door for the 12 days of December and

behind each door they found wintry scene with a

photo of one of them dressed up as a Christmas

character. The boys loved seeing who was going to

appear and looked forward to opening the doors

Form IVA to La Vac and back!

We made it onboard the ferry just as the captain was preparing to say bon voyage to Portsmouth! The

ferry trip was fun but also quite taxing at times due to the length of trip and so we were mightily relieved

to make it to Caen! After Mr Guest inadvertently showed us some of the French countryside, we madeit safely to La Vacquerie. On that first evening, we headed straight out to visit a set of German defences

stationed at Pointe du Hoc. It was quite spectacular to witness such monuments remaining from World

War II.On our return to the house, Mr Dawson gave us our first French lesson of the week. Our evening

beach time depended on our classroom success and so needless to say, we tried to be very attentive!

Over the course of the week we were fortunate enough to visit the following: BayeuxTapestry, Bayeux

Market, Mine Museum, a German Cemetery, Utah Beach Museum, the Tank Museum, Cinema Circulaire,

and also Pegasus Bridge Museum. Perhaps the highlight for a lot of us was our lunch in the small town

of Arromanches where we were instructed by Mr Dawson to only speak French throughout. The mini-bus

journey to Arromanches consisted of much practise in preparation for our big moment! Avakyan and

Caddy demonstrated how it should be done, whilst others stammered and staggered their way to the finish

line! Somehow, we all still received what we asked for!

We all had a wonderful time at La Vacquerie, made so by the tireless work and hospitality of Mr and MrsDawson. We shall keep with us the many stories of bravery and heroism to emerge from World War II

as well as memories of the sites that we visited.

Merci Monsieur and Madame Dawson! Magnifique!

    French Drama Evening

On Friday 31st October, Sunningdale hosted its annual French drama evening. Throughout the evening,

the audience was entertained with different short plays, poems and songs on the theme of Halloween.

We had everything on stage, from witches to skeletons, from a haunted hotel to a terrifying school party,

    including ghosts and Frankenstein.

It was a fun if not scary evening, and it was nice to see so many parents.

    Sunningdale Pre-Prep Football Tournament

Shortly after the beginning of term, we hosted the Sunningdale Pre-Prep Football Tournament. Strong

opposition arrived in the form of Knightsbridge, Eaton House, The Orchard, and Eaton House The Manor,

all looking to emerge victorious. Some excellent football was played by all resulting in some very close

matches.Having gone close to winning the tournament last year, our new crop of under 8s had something

to aim for. After battling valiantly and picking up some fine results, the boys were then outplayed against

Knightsbridge. This was a hugely successful day and we’d like to thank our visitors for playing the games

in fantastic spirit and to a high standard.

footage of the building of the wall and saw theimpact it had on families who had become

separated. They discussed the Iron curtain and

the Cold War. They also watched the recent

celebrations in Berlin and touched a real piece

Once again Darren and his team produced a

delicious supper of roast turkey and all the

trimmings, jelly, and Christmas pudding. The

dining room was decorated and supper was

eaten by candlelight. After supper it was the

turn of the staff to entertain the boys. X-factor

was the platform for singing and dancing in a

    Sunningdale School Choir

The choir have been working tremendously hard this term, and have sung exceptionally well at every

service in Chapel. With our new arrangement of Mr Goodwin on the organ and Mr Lea conducting, they

have been exploring some new repertoire. At Harvest they sang 'ThouVisitest the Earth' by Greene with

parents and friends helping on the lower parts, and at Remembrance they sang a very moving rendition of

the Ivor Novello song 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' which was very poignant at this year's 100th

Anniversary of the start of World War I. We were joined by the parents' choir on Advent Sunday when

they sang the 'Matin Responsory by Palestrina and VaughanWilliams's arrangement of 'The Truth from

Above'.The Carol Services were very special this year. The carols included ' In the Bleak Midwinter' by

Harold Darke, and a small ensemble sang the haunting 'Jesus Christ the Apple Tree'. We were joined by

Mr Beaman on guitar for an arrangement of Silent Night. At the end of term, the choir were invited to sing

at the Coxhill Manor Nursing home and the residents there appreciated the boys going along to sing to them.

    Music

The term seems to have passed in a whirlwind, but an amazing amount has been achieved musically by a

large number of our pupils since September. We have held two informal concerts in the Library, and a

number of boys from beginner level to the more advanced have performed. I was pleased that a few of

the boys in form 1 have been playing pieces having only started at the school this term, but have already

prepared music to play public. Two of our pupils,L.Malhame and G.Hopton are sitting full music scholarships

to senior schools next term and they have performed in both the concerts this term.Ten of our boys

who learn percussion attended an excellent day at Stowe School on 30th September where they met withpupils from other schools to take part in a percussion workshop and concert there. We had some good

success in ABRSM exams this term, notably G. Hopton obtaining a merit with his grade 6 singing, and

    L. Hopton reaching a merit in his Grade 5 singing, and E. Crespi obtaining a pass at grade 5 singing.

Musicians from Sunningdale represented the school at the local village Christmas lights festival, and members

of form 1 and 2 did very well in their singing at the Nativity play they put on at the end of term.

We are very pleased to welcome Mr Chris Goodwin who plays the organ regularly for our Sunday chapel

services and we say goodbye and thank you to Mr John MacDonald who has been teaching bagpipes here

and is now moving to pastures new in Canada. As always our peripatetic staff have been working so hard

behind the scenes and we appreciate the time and commitment they put in to help the department reach

the high standards we are now seeing in our concerts and exams.

    2nd XI Football

This year's 2nd XI started the season with great

promise finding themselves unbeaten at the end

of the first month. However, injury and some

very strong opponents quickly inflicted a dose of

reality on the side and it was one from which we

never really recovered. From October onwards

the team struggled to find any form and twice

poor morale and low confidence led us to

throw away solid leads – quickly it all becomes

one vicious cycle. Nevertheless as ever we had

our heroes and all stars; Delikatnyi was a solid

Captain, Malhame proved the most stubborn

(and merciless) of defenders, in midfield

Cartwright was as nimble footed as they come,

up front Bekar proved strong and determined

and undoubtedly the find of the season was

Goschen in goal. Truth though is that although

we were close to being a good side, close is not

good enough - we were always that one yard shyof pace or needing just one more good pass, that

one attempted dummy too many, that one tackle

too few. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a

great team for next season...perhaps! We shall see.

    3rd XI Football

After feverish transfer activity over the summer

and hopes of a new dawn being ushered in by

the new gaffer the 3rd IX took to the field

determined to play their own brand of 'calypso

football'.Out had gone complicated video analysis

and statistical breakdowns of every player's' role

and the simple edict from the top was play the

game with a smile on your face. The season went

on in this vein and no-one could say that we

were not a very happy side. Results ebbed and

flowed and whilst we often flattered to deceivethere were some very pleasing performances

against St. George's Windsor and Horris Hill.

More frustrating were the two games against

Woodcote where we were leading, in one game

substantially, at halftime only to snatch defeat

from the jaws of victory. Nonetheless, an

excellent season was had by all and praise must

be heaped on the no nonsense skipper,Thomas

'Scholesie' Seal and his able lieutenants, Alex

The Cross Country team had a fantastic victory at the Lord's Taverners Relay Marathon at Wellington

College on 12th October 2014. The team consisting of Hopton ma (Capt), Ker, Iglesias, Hawkey, Zakhir

ma, Hagg-Davies,T. Davies,Treacher, Jackson ma, Hobbs, Navarro and Jackson mi did fantastically well to

achieve first place with a time of 1 hour 38 minutes and 53 seconds. They all tried extremely hard and

after achieving an early lead, continued to push away from the other runners throughout the race. Thank

you to parents, relatives and friends for supporting the boys and for the donations to the Lord's Tavern-

    4th XI Football

The 4ths season has been nearly as brief as that feeling of not losing experienced at the beginning of a

match. It has been fun but awash with defeat. Part of our problem was that we did not have a settled core

but rather roving chancers who lent a boot there, a foot here. That said, we did make an important

discovery that may have ramifications in future seasons: Boam is goalkeeper of note.Without him we

would have lost by figures in the doubles or even trebles. We also must acknowledge the presence of

Crespi as captain who tried with all his might to keep spirits from flagging:he cajoled and encouraged with

unending energy. Other players of note were Klein and Sheng both of whom worked extremely hard for

the team and were unlucky not to get more for their efforts.Desmond, Davenport-Thomas and Pearson

also impressed in midfield and on the wings. Well done all.

    Under 11 A Football

The last time I was given charge of this group of

boys was in a very successful U9 A rugby team

(2012) and therefore I was rather excited heading

into this season! The enthusiasm and determination

from the start was superb and I knew that if the

boys focused and put in the hard yards they would

have a very similar season. It started against HallGrove in a pre-season tournament. It has always

been a fairly miserable hunting ground so my feet

were firmly on terra firma. That said, the boys put

in a tremendous performance and won the tour-

nament with a final 6-2 win against the hosts. This

was the start the boys needed and they kicked on

from this to win their next three games comfortably

against Brockhurst, St Georges and Ashdown

House. Sport can be a funny old thing and in the

next game against Hall Grove the boys went into it

slightly naively given their earlier win and conse-

quently lost 5-3 against. The dream of an unbeaten

season was over but to their credit the boys learnt

their lesson the hard way. Fortunately, it turnedout to be their only banana skin and they went on to

win all of their remaining matches - with particularly

pleasing wins against Woodcote and Ludgrove.

Senior mi. lead the line brilliantly all season and

ended up the leading goal scorer with 19 (not

including competitions). In midfield Hopkins was

the general who made some outstanding runs and

scored some terrific goals (18). Hopton mi. and

Senior ma. were the most improved players of the

season and made some wonderful challenges in the

middle along with some outrageous goals. Hinchliffe,

De-Carlos,Aguirre and Kunitsyn were brilliant at

the back, full of composure and grit. Buxton was a

rock in goal and pulled off some remarkable saves.

The future looks very bright indeed for many of

the boys and it was fantastic to see so many of

them given an opportunity to play for the 1st XI in

their final three matches.A marvelous season boys,

you should be very proud of your efforts indeed.

    U11 B Football

It was a superb season for the U11 B team. They played some brilliant football and it was a pleasure to

coach them. The season started with a 2 hour delay on the M4 on our way to the Brockhurst tournament.

We played three games against good opposition.Hobbs was fantastic in goal and managed to end the day

with three clean sheets. The team played well but we didn't score enough goals and came second in the

tournament on goal difference. We had a couple of bad games after that but into October and November

we started to play some beautiful football and blow other teams away with our team work and

determination to win. We did the double over our local rivalsWoodcote House which was very satisfying. Jackson getting the only goal in the game at home and then in the away fixture De Carlos and Aguirre

both got on the score sheet in a thrilling 4-3 win.

But undoubtedly the stand out fixture of the season

was away at Milbourne Lodge. The game ended

10-1 to Sunningdale and the game included three

superb hat-tricks from Field ma, Jackson ma and

Kunitsyn.Field ma deserves a particular mention for

his precise corner kicking ability which caused

opposition teams real problems. Our top goal

scorer for the season was Jackson ma who was Mr

Reliable all season performing his box to box duties

fantastically. The player of the season was Caddy

who captained the team by example and was a

pleasure to have in the team. Well done everyone

    for a great season.

    U9A Football

With Boscawen and Berridge the sole survivors

from the 2013 crop of Under 9s, a new, and fairly

inexperienced side was built for the challenges that

lay ahead in 2014. Arguably the toughest opposition

arrived first in the form of Bishopsgate and a 4-1 de-

feat was taking on the chin. The season restarted

with a resounding victory over Brockhurst (Berridge

3, Boscawen 2, Osborne 1), before the boys caught

fire againstAshdown House and hit double figures in

a 10-0 drubbing of our hosts. The left footed wiz-

ardry of Berridge finding the net six times.A losing

streak of four defeats followed as heart and hunger

for victory appeared to be somewhat lacking. Cap-

tain Boscawen, attempted to rally the troops but to

no avail against Horris Hill (5- 6), St.Andrew’s, Pang-

bourne (2-3),Woodcote House (1-5) and Ludgrove

(2-5).When games were there to be won, convic-

tion and desire sadly disappeared.Last minute agony

versus Woodcote House and Milborne Lodge saw the boys walk away with a solitary draw, again leaving

the boys wondering what could have been. Papplewick away provided the next test.Against a side who

had enjoyed plenty of success thus far, Boscawen et al fought every tackle, struck every ball with convic-

tion, and supported each other like never before. A stunning left footed strike by Boscawen two minutes

into the second half laid the perfect platform for counter attacking football. Cue Osborne and Field mi.’s

resolute defending, Berridge’s composure on the ball,Allen’s chasing and hassling, and Jackson mi.’s cor-

poral like marshalling of those in front of him. Thirteen minutes of raw passion and commitment saw the

prevailing of a well earnt 1-0 victory. Back to back wins were then cemented with a 7-1 victory over

Knightsbridge, including one of the best Under 9 team goals to have graced our Sunningdale fields. It has

been the boys’ aim to play in a style that promotes quick, intricate passing with continual movement and

player rotation. It was fantastic to see this pay dividends in their final outing of the season. The boys and

I would like to thank all of the parents who gave their support at the matches.

After a slow start to the season and four

straight losses the boys found themselves,in the

match before half term, up against St Andrew's,

Pangbourne. The opposition scored first but this

only sort to galvanise the team and they began

to play as a team for the first time in the

season. This newly found team spirit turned

around the season and resulted in a seven match

unbeaten run where they beat Papplewick,

    Under 9B Football

As this is the first time for the majority of the

boys playing football at Sunningdale School, I

believe the U9 B's have had a very successful

term. With their willingness to train, the boys

have improved greatly - mainly in their passing

and tackling. After a few losses at the start of

the season, we managed to get a 4-2 victory

against Horris Hill with a hat trick from Guest-

Gornall. The boys displayed a high level of inten-

sity and the passing was outstanding, playing as a

true team would. The sweet taste of victory was

a huge reward for the team who, despite early

losses, came back to record two wins and two

draws. Captain Senior was a great asset, leading

from the front with a positive attitude. We

finished the term with a 3-3 draw against

Papplewick with a stunning last minute equaliser

from Affram. The U9 B's ended on a positive

note and they'll be ready and raring to continue

    their progress in 2015.

    Fives

The reroofing of the courts has meant that is has

been nigh on impossible to practise this term. Eton

very kindly offered us use of their courts but it

proved difficult to find the time to get over there.

Considering this, and the fact that the captain of

fives was out of action for almost all of the matches,

it has been a fantastically successful term. Westarted the term with a good win against RGS,High

Wycombe, we beat Ludgrove twice, the second

time without Russell and we also beat them in the

tournament at the end of term. Unfortunately

Summer Fields proved too strong but that gives a

good target for next term. The new roof looks

fantastic and with plenty of time on court and a

fully fit squad next term should be very exciting.

    Under 9C Football

This term the footballers of the U9 C team have

improved tremendously. They have worked hard

to improve teamwork, passing, dribbling, spatial

awareness and other skills. We have been lucky

to have the tremendous input of 'Babs'

(a Chelsea Football Club's school coach) help

out on a weekly basis. Matches have been playedagainst Bishopsgate, Woodcote House and

Papplewick. The results have not gone our way,

however the team have improved considerably

are now looking forward to the rugby term.

    Squash

We only had one match this term but the court

has been in pretty regular use with some excellentinternal battles. Our only fixture was against

Ludgrove, always a challenge but one to be relished.

We went 0-2 down after two matches and the

writing appeared to be on the wall. Kim was up

next. What he lacks in agility he easily makes up

for in power and accuracy and he ran out a

convincing winner. That left the ever-reliable

Hopton brothers. Hopton ma.won without too

much fuss.Meanwhile in the next door court the

drama was unfolding. It was 11-11 in the final

game. Hopton mi. produced one of the most

astonishing winning shots ever seen and victory

    was ours!

SwimmingThe swimming team has had a superb term including

a fantastic victory against Papplewick, despite facing

a larger team. The boys have had superb coaching

from Mrs Dyachenko who has really driven them to

do their best. The swimming gala against Papplewick

has been the highlight of the term with excellent

performances from the team captain Dyachenko,

who tirelessly competed in numerous events. The

new swimming pool changing rooms are an exciting

new feature of the school which will vastly improve

    the swimming experience.

    Bradfield College Science Challenge

We were invited to attend the Bradfield College Science Challenge and

the boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It consisted of three workshops

based around chemistry, physics and biology. The first challenge

involved maggots and their preference for light or dark, the second

building and testing a speaker system and the third carrying out a

series of tests to work out several mystery chemicals. Finally after all

the hard work the boys got to watch a hydrogen bomb explode in thecourtyard outside the main school. The pupils in attendance were Field

    ma, Khan,Hobbs and Wilson.

     Wellington College Chemistry Spectacular

We went to Wellington College to see the Chemistry Spectacular! It was a very

explosive day of exciting chemistry. The biggest bang of the day was a mixture of

hydrogen and oxygen, it was very loud indeed.

The technicians had filled up a balloon and set it alight with a split on a stick.

Another fun chemical reaction was with liquid nitrogen. The Head of Science placed

some flowers into a bucket of liquid nitrogen and gave them to Mr White, only for

them to fall apart in his hands! The last but by no means least was a life like light

saber. It was called the ‘barking dog’ and at the end there was a streak of light and

the foul smell of sulphur.Hopefully the police will not get these l ightsabers too soon!!

    Sunningdale School celebrates 140 Years

To mark the 140th year anniversary of Sunningdale School, a drinks party was held in London at The Rifles Club. It was a great, nostalgic evening where 200

Old Sunningdalians caught up with one another, many of who had not met up since leaving Sunningdale. The oldest leaver that attended the drinks left in 1939!Lots of great memories were shared and the Old Boys were pleased to hear that many of the old traditions of Sunningdale were still taking place.
