School Newsletter Day By Day
Day by day, your mercies, Lord, attend me,
Bringing comfort to my anxious soul. Day by day, the blessings, Lord, you send me
Draw me nearer to my heav’nly goal. Love divine, beyond all mortal measure,
Brings to naught the burdens of my quest; Savior, lead me to the home I treasure,
Where, at last, I’ll find eternal rest. (CWS 765:1)
Every day we wake up with different goals in mind. Sometimes it’s simply to survive and make it back to our pillow once again. Other times it’s to relax or find some enjoyment. Still other times it’s to get stuff done, to accomplish our work, to make something of the day. But behind all these thoughts is one ultimate goal: to make it to heaven. We know that all other things are merely points along the journey. There will be highs and lows.
There will be challenges and comfort. So the quest will not be easy. So we have the mer-cies of the Lord to help us every day. The love of Christ that defies belief rests in our
hearts continuously. Knowing the grace upon grace makes every day of our journey just that much easier to bear. Rest, permanent rest, will soon be here.
Day by day, I know you will provide me Strength to serve and wisdom to obey;
I will seek your loving will to guide me O’er the paths I struggle day by day.
I will fear no evil on the morrow; I will trust in your enduring grace.
Savior, help me bear life’s pain and sorrow; Till in glory I behold your face.
(CWS 765:2)
Even though heaven is constantly on our minds we do not forget the responsibilities we have here on earth. We have a calling to serve. We have a command to obey. We have so many things that our Savior-God asks of us in this world. So many that they are impossi-
ble to keep up with. But still we strive, because he promises us strength. Still we work, because promises wisdom. In his Word we find these gifts, and so our struggle against sin
becomes stronger, better, more sanctified with each passing day. And with grace firmly entrenched in our hearts, we have no fear of failure, no fear of rejection. Only the constant
hope of seeing our Savior face to face.
Oh, what joy to know that you are near me When my burdens grow too great to bear;
Oh, what joy to know that you will hear me When I come, O Lord, to you in prayer. Day by day, no matter what betide me,
You will hold me ever in your hand. Savior, with your presence here to guide me,
I will reach at last the promised land. (CW 765:3)
Christ is always near. Without this knowledge, how would we ever survive? We would soon be crushed by the burdens of this sin-tainted world. But instead we know he is pre-
sent in his Word and in his Sacraments. On top of this he grants the gift of prayer, to listen to our cries for mercy and answer them with love and peace. With all this on our side we know that we are held tightly in his loving hands. He will guide us safely to the promised
land. Day by day, one after the other, we always have this comfort, this hope, this joy.

Through my Bible in 3 years
This Bible reading series is designed to take
only a few minutes each day. If you haven’t
started in January, that’s okay. Feel free to
jump in and start in the middle of a year. This
same Bible reading structure is found in the
Northwestern Lutheran.
To help you through your Bible study, con-
sider this anecdote: Peter the Barber once
asked Martin Luther how he, an ordinary kind
of guy, could read the Bible with profit. Luther
answered:
1.What does God tell me here?
2.What makes me glad?
3.What makes me sad?
4.What do I want to pray for:
Try it in your Bible reading!
First, we must remember that the Bible’s main purpose is to make us “wise for salvation through faith in
Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). The Bible was not written with the primary purpose of giving us a complete code of
laws and regulations that would give us an easy answer to every purpose of giving us a complete code of laws and
regulations that would give us an easy answer to every decision in life. Such a code of laws and regulations could
never save us, even if we sought to devote our whole lives to following its moral precepts.
Nevertheless, it is still amazing how the Bible answers very specific modern moral problems. The Bible
gives such answers, not because it mentions every specific moral question that could ever arise in the history of the
world but, rather, the Bible presents God’s basic principles, for what is moral and immoral, defining that which is evil
and that which is good. Armed with those basic principles, we are guided to wise decisions as new specific ques-
tions arise.
For instance, the Scriptures obviously make no specific reference to many modem life-and-death issues, yet
the principle that “The LORD brings death and makes alive” (1 Samuel 2:6) guides us in making decisions. With
that principle we consider life a precious gift of God that we should treat with respect.
A:
What are we to do about current moral problems or situations that God’s law does not seem to address? Q:
This We Believe: Justification by Grace Through Faith
We believe that works pleasing to God are works of love, for “love is the fulfillment of law” (Romans
13:10). Faith, however, does not set up its own standards to determine what is loving (Matthew 15:9). True
faith delights to do only what agrees with God’s holy will. That will of God is revealed in the Bible, particu-
larly in the Tin Commandments as their content is repeated in the New Testament. In wrestling with cur-
rent moral problems, the Christian will therefore seek answers from God’s law.

WELS Commission on Special Ministries is
overhauling its referral forms to make it easier
for more people in special circumstance to re-
ceive and hear God’s Word.
Special Ministries invites members of the mili-
tary or members otherwise living overseas,
people impacted by incarceration, and families
and individuals with intellectual and develop-
mental disabilities to share their contact infor-
mation so they can receive gospel-oriented ma-
terials and encouragement catered to their spe-
cific circumstances.
WELS Military Services uses referrals to main-
tain contact and offer spiritual resources to the
men and women who are serving their country.
It’s estimated that more than 1,500 WELS
members are in the U.S. military, at U.S. instal-
lations and overseas, though only about 20 per-
cent of them are referred for ministry at this cru-
cial time in life. Part of the plan to reach all
WELS military personnel is making the referral
form easier to find and to submit names.
WELS Prison Ministry serves 1,500 correctional
institutions across our country, primarily via a
popular Bible study program but also by con-
necting inmates with local WELS ministry where
possible. Prison Ministry referral is one way that
WELS members can make sure their family
members, friends, and others who are incarcer-
ated receive Christ-centered Lutheran ministry.
WELS Intellectual and Developmental Disabili-
ties Ministry (IDDM) has a ministry by mail
called “He Cares – We Care.” He Cares –
We Care sends out seasonal cards, letters,
and Christian items to people who are devel-
opmentally disabled. The referral form helps
WELS members enroll loved ones in a minis-
try-by-mail program, which provides Christ-
centered, simplified messages for those who
are developmentally disabled.
Rev. Jim Behringer, director of the Commis-
sion on Special Ministries, says, “WELS re-
ferral processes were around before there
was an Internet. We hope that this new, eas-
ier way to connect people with ministry will
mean that many more people will find the
special ministry that meets their spiritual
needs.”
The new form is available at wels.net/refer.

tries, visit wels.net/special-ministries.

“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not
one of them is forgotten before God?”
-Luke 12:6
With these words Jesus again reminds us of
God’s loving care. At the time when Jesus was here
on earth, poor people sometimes bought sparrows for
food. Sparrows were found everywhere and therefore
were very cheap. One could buy five sparrows for a
very small piece of money called a farthing.
But even though sparrows were not worth
much, Jesus said, “Not one of them is forgotten be-
fore God.” Even though there were so many spar-
rows which could be bought so cheaply, God did not
forget a single one of them.
We can be certain that God does not forget us
either. Jesus says in His Word that we are worth
more to Him than many sparrows. Our heavenly Fa-
ther, who provides even for little sparrows, will
surely also take care of us, His children. Let us trust
in Him with all our heart and not worry about what
the future may bring. God has everything in control!
May we never forget this amazing truth.

Nebraska Lutheran News and Notes
We welcomed 23 graduates to the ranks of the NELHS alumni on Saturday, May 14. Their class verse was Colos-sians 2:6-7 “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” The valedictorian for the class was Faith Otte of York. The salutatorian was Nathaniel Ewart of Omaha.
Two students (a sophomore boy and a senior boy) were confirmed on May 15. We are so happy to see these young men join our church body.
Several of our students will be joining with the WELS Kingdom Workers and participating in summer mission trips. Our students will be traveling to Connecticut and California to help congregations with their outreach activities.
Extra-curricular update:
The boys’ track team and the girls’ track team each won the Frontier Conference Championship on April 28. This was the girls’ second consecutive championship and the boys’ first.
Six athletes in eight events qualified for the state track meet at the district track meet on May 11. The six athletes and their events are as follows: Jeffrey Keefe (Sr.) in the 110 m hurdles and the 300 m hurdles, Matthew Koeppe (Sr.) in the 1600 m, Ruth Mayer (Sr.) in the high jump, Faith Otte (Sr.) in the 3200 m and 1600 m, Brooke Malchow (Jr.) in the 800 m, and Anna Ewart (So.) in the 1600 m.
We thank the Lord for the success of our students in our final year in the Frontier Conference. The Frontier conference sponsors eight activities. NELHS won championships in four of the activities (Girls’ basketball, Speech, Boys’ Track, Girls’ Track) and was conference runner-up in two activities (Volleyball and One-Act Play).
Financial update:
As of the end of April, Nebraska Lutheran needs $119,000 in donations from congregations and individuals by June 30 to meet the budgeted amounts. We pray that we will be able to meet and exceed this amount!
The board of control is continuing to meet to develop a strategy to pay for the newly approved po-sition of Mission Advancement Director.
Upcoming events:
Nebraska District Convention: June 6-8
All Sports Camp for boys and girls in grades 5-9 will be held June 12-15. Contact Mr. Benjy Wells ([email protected]) if you would like more information about the NELHS All-Sport Camp.
The NELHS summer golf outing will be Saturday, July 30, at Highlands Golf Course in Lincoln. Please contact Activities’ Director Benjy Wells ([email protected]) if you are interested in participating or perhaps sponsor-ing a hole at the golf outing.
Our goal is 40 new students for next year. So far, 25 have applied (23 freshmen and 2 sophomores). Please contact Administrator Mark Otte at [email protected] or 402-728-5236 if you have a recruiting lead. Please pray for this goal!
