Dear Parents,
We have really enjoyed the end of term as it has given us many opportunities
to celebrate some lovely work in the school, participate in superb visits to
complement our curriculum and of course the blessing of our new building for
KS4 and KS5.
Half of our Y7 students took the opportunity to go down to Newquay to
participate in the annual Watersports trip with six of our staff. The weather
was really good – warm but quite a bit of cloud to reduce the risk of sunburn.
Students surpassed themselves this year making the most of activities
including sailing, coasteering and surfing and they all learned many new skills.
Mr Marrero led the Y10 Business Studies trip to Berlin which was the first time
we have had this opportunity. Again, students made the most of their time
there visiting local companies as well as other places of interest which they
took very seriously. We hope they will demonstrate their new knowledge in
their Business Studies exams!
A few of our staff are moving on at the end of the year: Mr Callender, Mrs
Hewitt, Ms Tseliou, Ms Blatchford, Ms Stewart, Mr Thrasivoulou, Ms Begum
(SENCO), Ms Danvers, Ms Begum (maths), Mr Dumpleton and Mr May. I wish
to thank them for all of their hard work and wish them every success in their
new schools.
The first day of term is Wednesday 5th September. Y7 will come in for an 8.30
start. Y8, 9 10 and 11 should arrive for a 10.30 start. Individual school photos
for Y7, Y11 and Y12 will take place on Friday 7th September and all Tutor
Groups will also have their photos taken as a group.
I hope that all of our students and families make the most of the break and
get some well-earned rest. Please make sure that all uniform is purchased
ready to wear on the first day of term.
Best wishes,
Rob Ahearn, Headteacher

6th Form Transition Day
On Tuesday 3rd July, the school hosted its 6th Form Transition Day for students in year 11 who
have applied to join our brand new 6th form in September. Students were involved in a number
of activities throughout the day in preparation for the transition into 6th form.
The 6th form will be based in the newly refurbished premises in the North London Business
Park and we will be offering a range of A level courses. Enrolment for the 6th form will take
place on Thursday 23rd July at 11.00am for both internal and external students.
GCSE Results Day
Year 11 students will arrive to receive their GCSE results on Thursday 23rd August 2018 at
9.30am. A celebratory breakfast will be made available for all Year 11 students and parents
from 8.30am in Building 4, which will be home to the KS4 and 6th form students.
A separate letter will be sent to Y11 students and families outlining the arrangements in more
detail.

Service of Blessing for Building 4
Following the 6th Form Transition Day, a service of blessing was held in the new facilities which was led by His
Eminence Archbishop Gregorios of Thyateira and Great Britain, and The Right Reverend Athanasios Bishop of
Tropaeou. The event was attended by staff, parents and students as well as stake holders involved in the project.
Mr Ahearn thanked the different groups who have made the build possible as well as thanking the Church and the
Governors for their support.
His Eminence Archbishop Gregorios heaped praise on the work and effort put in by the staff of the school and
highlighted the importance of education as being the foundation of strong society. He performed the special blessing
which was followed by light refreshments.

Year 6 Induction Day
On Thursday 5th July, the school hosted the Year 6 Induction Day for primary students who will be joining St Andrew
in September. Students were greeted in the main hall and the day began with a welcome assembly. Following the
assembly, the students participated in a range of engaging lessons, including classics, French, maths, music and
science. Staff gave them a good idea of what they can expect when they arrive in September.
KS3 Awards Evening
The KS3 awards evening was held on Tuesday 10th July 2018
in the main hall, where students who have excelled in
particular subjects during the academic year received an
award from staff. Parents, students and staff were also treated
to performances from Thomas French on the Cello, Alex
Ioannides on the Piano, and an amazing vocal performance
from the 2018 School Talent show winner Enkeleda Skiada.
The event was hosted by year 9 students Georgia
Christodoulou and George Rogers.
A big thank you to Friends of St Andrew (FoSA) who sponsored
the awards on the evening.
St Andrew Y7 students visit JCoSS
A team of year 7 students from our school were
selected by their RE teachers to take part in an
event at the Jewish Community Secondary School
in Barnet. JCoSS has a large team of staff
dedicated to the teaching of RE and also outreach
work beyond the Jewish community. One of the
ways this takes place is through interaction with
other schools. As a consequence, we were one of
several schools to visit their Inter-faith tent and
meet students from the school. ‘Getting to know
you’ games were played, songs were sung, and
social media details were swapped. It was clear
that year 7s at any school, of any faith, all share
the similar interests as each other.
Following this, our students had the chance to
have a look around the school. The visible symbols
of Judaism were obvious, from the Hebrew signs
on the building and windows, to a Mezuzah on
every doorpost. Our students learned that the
Mezuzah is a small scroll of scripture inside a small
box which will often be touched as each room is
entered.
It was fascinating to see another, very different,
faith school but also recognise the many
similarities in character, faith and culture. Well
done to James, Alexsandra, Mario, Nia, Kyri,
Zafirah. Raffaella, Chris, Zain, Anastasia, Joy and
Alexis, who represented the school so well.

We have also had the pleasure of working with Aarti Ramchand, who decided
to volunteer in the Maths department after completing her GCSE exams.
Below is an account of her time here.
I’m Aarti Ramchand, a former year 11 student at this
school. When I finished my GCSEs in June, this year
(2018), I was left having nothing to do over the
summer holidays. So I decided to ask Mrs Sampson
if there was a possibility of me coming into school a
few days a week to help out in the Maths department
and aid other students from all years in their
learning, whether by going around the classroom
and explaining certain concepts to students and how
to go about a maths problem if they were struggling
with it or by explaining it on the board to the whole
class or even just checking that people knew what
they are doing and were getting the answers correct.
Loving Maths, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the
opportunity the school has given me of being in
contact with it on a daily basis. The satisfaction that
results from helping someone and the expression
that a student gets on their face when they
understand something is priceless and makes it in
my opinion all the more worthwhile. Furthermore, it’s
nice to be on the other side for once; not being the
student but the “teacher” and finding out how
everything works behind the scenes!

Head of Science - Mr London
This year we say farewell to Mr Thrasivoulou and Miss Begum who will be embarking on the next chapter of their careers. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise their hard work and dedication to the science department, which has no doubt contributed to the strong foundations we have built and put the department in a position to move on to bigger and exciting new things next year. Good luck! In other news, congratulations to Mario Lambrou, Sarah Beshko and Shaila Ramchand who won the end of year Science Awards. These students have worked extremely hard all year and their progress has not gone unnoticed. Keep up the good work.
Head of MFL - Miss Fourcade
Year 9 French Poetry
As part of our poetry mini-project, Year 7 and 9 students discovered the life and work of French poet Robert Desnos. We discovered that Desnos was a journalist whose passion for poetry triggered his decision to write one poem every day for a year, making him a very prolific writer. He died at the end of World War II, after being imprisoned in a concentration camp. Year 7 and 9 students were inspired to write poetry in his style, on the theme: ‘le Bonheur, pour moi, c’est…’ “Happiness, for me, is…..” Poetry came to life in unexpected ways, with some truly impressive work! Well done to all students involved!

Tartuffe – theatre trip
On 21st June, a group of Year 9 and 10 students went to the Theatre Royal Haymarket to watch Tartuffe, a 17th
century play by French playwright Molière. Students were able to enjoy the bilingual performance thanks to the sub-
titles available throughout the play: in English when the actors were speaking French and vice versa. While the original
text was used in French, the use of English allowed the director to bring a
modern touch to the play. The cast, including award-winning Paul Anderson
and Audrey Fleurot, inspired students by demonstrating that languages are
not limited to travels and interactions, but are also a vehicle for culture.
What Thomas, Alex and Dimitris had to say:
‘Surprisingly, a lot of us managed to pick up a lot of the French dialogue
without actually reading the subtitles and this is all thanks to our
phenomenal, amazing and spectacular French teachers. It was a very
interesting and enjoyable trip, that enabled us to expand our knowledge of
the beautiful French language. There was an unbelievable and
overwhelming plot twist and the performance was very engaging for the
audience. Oui Oui! C’était très bon!’
Leukaemia Cancer Society Short Story Competition
Congratulations to Helena Stylianou in Year 9 who was the runner
up in the Leukaemia Cancer Society short story competition. She
entered the 13-15 year olds category and had her story published
(Ms Blatchford has a copy of the book).
Below is a picture of Helena and Ms Blatchford at the presentation
after collecting her certificate. Helena’s story is below.
It hit me like a truck. For the past 10 years, I have been living in hell
because of my mum. The past three weeks have been worse, like
being in a burning house, not being able to escape, but still living.
Why was I letting my brother and I live in this hell when it could have
been over with years? It was all my fault. I wouldn’t have to cook,
clean or help my brother if I had just called my father.
Why was I waiting for so long? Why was I putting it off so much? Was
it because I didn’t want to upset my mum? Was it because I was
scared? I finally plucked up the courage to call my father. I had the
phone in my hand for about an hour, trying to figure out what to say.
I pushed all my feelings and thoughts aside and hit the call button.
I told him everything. I even cried. He said it was is fault but it wasn’t at all. He said it was because he never came to
see us but it wasn’t. He came and got my brother and I the next day. Mum got mad but my dad didn’t let her get away
with what she had put us through. Now, I live in a nice house, where I don’t have to cook or clean. I do still help, but
it’s not my responsibility anymore, and neither is my brother. I’m glad I was able to call my dad, because now, my life
is just great.
He saved me. My courage saved me, and I’m glad it did.
