Let’s Celebrate This week at school devotion, we talked to the students about
integrity. What does integrity mean?
It means doing the right thing - even when no one is watching.
This can be hard to do, especially if everyone else is doing the
wrong thing. However, God wants us to do what is right, even if
others are not, or if no one is around.
Integrity doesn’t mean being perfect, but it does mean making a
choice to do what is right. It is the ability to keep a promise, even
when it hurts. It is telling the truth, when it’s easier to lie. It is not
taking the easy way out. God wants us to follow Jesus’ example
and always keep on doing good things. He has given us his Holy
Spirit to help us. Let us strive to be honourable and live a life of
integrity.

Principal Installation Service – this Sunday, the 25th of August Everyone is welcome to join us this Sunday, the 25th of August at 9:30am for a very special church service
here at St John’s. The Prep students will be helping us, as we officially welcome Mrs Bjelke-Petersen to her new
role as Principal. This is a very important occasion for our school community, and we encourage students who
are attending to wear their school uniform. Please bring a plate of morning tea for a shared time of fellowship
after the service. We look forward to seeing you there.
Sunday Night Life – Sunday, the 25th August 9:30am
This year for Sunday Night Life, our Prep students have the privilege of taking part in our
special Principal Installation Service. All families are invited to come along and share in
this devotional time, as they explore the theme ‘Celebrate’. This service will be held on
Sunday, the 25th of August, at 9:30am, in the School Hall. Please bring a plate of food to
share for a time of fellowship after the service.
Health Alert There has been a reported case of chicken pox within the school community. Even if your child has been
vaccinated, they can still exhibit flu-like symptoms and develop red spots that are contagious. Please check with
your doctor if you suspect that your child or family members are showing any symptoms of chicken pox.
Children must be excluded until blisters and spots have cleared.
School Information Meeting – Parent Invitation The Stakeholders Meeting on Tuesday, the 10th of September, at 7pm, in
the conference room of the school administration building, is an opportunity
for parents, staff and school council to review the school’s progress, and
plan for the year ahead. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend
this meeting. Topics covered include the proposed fees for next year, 2020
term dates, and other items that people may like to suggest or discuss. If you
have any items you would like to add to the agenda, please put them in
writing prior to the evening to enable an agenda to be prepared. Please
forward to Mrs Bjelke-Petersen by e-mail at [email protected] or drop a
letter into the office. This is a wonderful opportunity to keep informed and
have input about the school.
Music Notes The Senior Band and Senior Guitar performed for the Senior Citizens last week. The students did a tremendous
job performing, and impressed the audience. It was great to see some smaller trios perform as well at this
concert, and some soloists. Thank you also to the Senior Citizens Committee for their kind donation to the music
department.
South Burnett Community Fun Day Thank you to the members of the St John’s Whip-cracking Team who performed a whip cracking demonstration
at the South Burnett Community Fun Day last Saturday. The students did a fantastic job providing a very
entertaining demonstration for onlookers. Thank you for always being available for these events and for being
such wonderful representatives of St John’s School.
Whip-cracking News Saturday 31st August – Wondai Show Demonstration
Students are to assemble at 1:30pm for a 1:45pm demonstration. Please meet in front of the grandstand.
Students are to wear their full school whip-cracking uniform. Please confirm with the office if you are able to

Daffodil Day

Please collect after school from the office.
Steven Herrick Visit Students in Year 6 to Year 9 were thoroughly entertained by a visit from Australian children’s author and poet Steven Herrick. Over 100 students gathered in the school library to hear his talk entitled ‘Poetry to the Rescue’. Steven read some of his work, created spontaneous poetry, shared stories, and generally created some very entertaining moments for our students. We thank Steven for his visit - the most important outcome from this session was that students are eager to read his verse novels and are excited about writing poetry.
Book Week Day This Friday, the 23rd of August is Book Week Day. Come along dressed up as the theme “Reading is my Secret
Power” or any book character. (Remember - costumes are to be stress free for parents)

Year 6 working on fun art and craft activities that tie in with the Book Week shortlisted books.
The day will finish with story reading on the library hill before heading to assembly.
Parents are welcome to join in with their children for this fun day. (You may even like to dress up as well)

Relay for Life - Our Relay for Life school team has been fundraising through
various events throughout the year. We know that many of you have supported
events such as hot chocolate Thursday and silver coin challenge. We will donate
our final amount raised at school in the week before the event in October. We
understand there are many people in our school community that have had, or are
caring for, a loved one with a cancer diagnosis, and that they may wish to donate
directly to the team. To make a donation please go to: relayforlife.org.au, search
‘St John’s Lutheran School Kingaroy’, click on the ‘Donate’ link and follow the instructions from here. All funds go
towards Cancer Council Qld and supporting patients, their families and research towards a cancer free future.
Donations Needed - If anyone has any items that could be used as prizes for games we are running at the
Relay for Life Event, we would love some donations. Items should be new - toys, unwanted gifts, any of these
will be appreciated. Please drop them into the school office.
Apex Debating - The APEX debating final will be held at St John’s on Wednesday, the 28th of August. The Year
7 & 8 debate between Kingaroy State High and St John’s will commence at 6pm and this will be held in the
Conference Room located in the main Administration building. Pioneer Village Excursion - The Year 9 students are studying the Industrial Revolution in History this
semester. As part of the study, we went on a field trip to the Highfields Pioneer Village.
The objective of the field trip is to conduct research into the change in machinery and household items
throughout the centuries; in particular, to experience what life was like before the Industrial Revolution and how
this time period has affected our lives today.
Wow, what an amazing day. We saw a shearing demonstration, cooked damper and ate it hot (yum), learnt
about the history of the whip and then explored the village. A great day was had by all!
Secondary Snippets (Cont.) STUDY TIME – Just a reminder that students can access study time on Tuesday mornings.
This is a great chance for students to see Junior Secondary teachers regarding assessments.
BOOKWEEK DAY – We invite the students to join in and dress up as a book character if they wish. We will
have a mini-parade in form class this Friday, the 23rd of August.
UNIFORMS - Thank you to the secondary students who wear the formal uniform each Monday. To wear your
uniform correctly and with pride every day is a great habit to start developing for your adult life.
Father’s Day Stall – Next Week! Year 6 students will be holding a Father’s Day Stall this year to raise money for
their Year 6 Canberra Trip. A lovely selection of gifts has been ordered, ranging
in price from $1 - $10. This stall will be open on Thursday, the 29th of
August, and Friday, the 30th of August, from 8:00am-9:00am.
If you would like your child to purchase a gift from the Father’s Day Stall,
please only send them to school with coins or a $5 or $10 note to avoid lost
change.
Bus students will have an opportunity to go to the stall on Thursday, the
29th of August, at Morning Tea Playtime.
A time will be scheduled for students in the younger grades (Prep - Year 2) on
Thursday to attend the Father’s Day Stall with their classroom teacher.
From the Classroom – Year 4W This week in science 4W have been looking at the effects that wind and water have our beaches with erosion.
This included some investigations in the sandpit to test how much wind and water it takes to cause beach
erosion.
We have also been learning about the three different rocks types. After looking at examples of sedimentary,
metamorphic and igneous rocks we created our own from starburst lollies. A fun and yummy lesson!
Book Club Book Club Issue 6 went home last week. Orders are due back into the office by Monday, the 26th of August.
P&F News – We need your help! Kingaroy Baconfest is this weekend! This Saturday, the 24th August, St John’s P&F will be having a stall at
“Little Piggies” (activities, food & entertainment for children – held in the lane behind the town library). We will be
selling “Piggies in Blankets” (pork sausages in bread) and providing a free activity for children to decorate some
rocks as part of our ‘St John’s Rocks 4610’ initiative. We require helpers for this day for set up from 7-9am, stall
operators (1 hour shifts) 9am - 4pm and pack up crew from 4pm. We are trying a new way for volunteers to sign
up to help, using the same system the school uses for booking interviews. To book your volunteer time, please
go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and enter the code cfct9. Alternatively, you can contact us via messenger
on Facebook or email – [email protected]. Thank you for your support!
Kingaroy Baconfest The annual Kingaroy Baconfest will get crackling this weekend. Once again, a number of St John’s parents have
helped to organise this event and it is shaping up to be a wonderful weekend! There are a number of events and
activities for all the family to enjoy! On Saturday morning from 8am - 3pm in the lane behind the Town Hall- Little
Piggies in the Park will take place. This will provide an opportunity for the piglets (your kids) to have some
baconlicious fun! There will be many activities, food and entertainment available for the whole family to enjoy.
Our St John’s P&F will be holding a ‘Piggies in Blankets’ stall and the St John’s Kindy will have a Playdough
Porkers Stall, along with many other stalls from a wide range of community groups. So make sure you head on
