At Morphett Vale East we are building more discussion opportunities into our Maths lessons. Our students are being asked to look at how they are problem solving, why they are problem solving and to argue why they think that they are correct. They are also being asked to share ideas and strategies at the end of each Maths lesson. We often hear people say, “Well I wasn’t any good at maths, so my child won’t be either”. So I thought you might be interested to read this quote from Jo Boaler who is sharing the latest brain research. One of the most damaging mathematics myths propagated in classrooms and homes is that math is a gift, that some people are naturally good at math and some are not (Boaler 2013a, 2013b). This idea is strangely cherished in the Western world but virtually absent in Eastern countries such as China and Japan that top the world in mathematics achievement (PISA 2012)”. New scientific evidence showing the incredible capacity of the brain to change, rewire, and grow in a really short time (Maguire et al. 2006) suggests that all students can learn mathematics to high levels with good teaching experiences. Descriptive writing has been our focus for the start of the term. The children created their own

Superhero, created a name and a superpower and then wrote verbs and

adjectives to describe their hero. The children then used these words

to write sentences.

Room 8 News We have had a busy start to Term 3!

We have been playing number games with dominoes and playing cards. When playing games we are practicing our Maths strategies—subitising, counting on, recognising

doubles, near doubles and rainbow facts. We also have been using the Maths strategies when we work on problematised situations. The children enjoy

sharing their strategies to show their thinking.

We are enjoying listening to Mrs Hargreaves read

books by Roald Dahl

We have been learning how to write our sight words and

spelling words. We have also been using

Dictionaries to find and write words

Why not come along and join in the

fun at the “Heart Kids Fundraiser” that will be running from 8.30am.

Full BBQ facilities along with Coffee Van, home make goodies & cold

drinks.

There will be raffles running and “Heats of Hope” for $1.

Bring along your small change and

help make a difference

Our girls played their final game as part of the knockout Netball

series last Thursday 3rd.

Even though they lost I thought this was a wonderful display of great sportsmanship from the

team. .

It was a tough game against a school who played extremely well. Their players were also

MUCH taller than ours.

Well done girls- super proud of you all.

The 5c challenge continues

Every few weeks the members of our school Parents and Friends collect and count the cash that our students are raising during this challenge in anticipation of the winning classroom receiving Pizza Lunch. Everyone is doing a great job and the top three classrooms so far were awarded certificates this morning at assembly. There is still plenty of time left so keep those 5 cent pieces coming in. Good luck!! The tally so far………

Jump Rope for Heart

ts

The courtyard at Pipalyatjara Anangu School

Jump Rope for Heart is on again this year and we will be skipping to fundraise for the Heart Foundation from week 6 to 10

this term.

Jump Rope for Heart is a great opportunity to get active, learn new skills

and raise money. There are also some great prizes to be won for fundraising.

Emma Howlett from the Heart

Foundation will be here on Thursday 31st of August at 2:30pm to launch our Jump Rope fundraising with a talk about heart health and a skipping demonstration on

the quad. Parents and families are encouraged to attend.

In Room 1 we are very excited about our new pen pals in a school called Pipalyatjara. Pipalyatjara is a small community with about 100 people living there. It is right up the top of South Australia, near Western Australia and the Northern Territory. We have written a letter introducing ourselves to the students up there. We are waiting for our letter back and we are very excited! We are going to make a photo story about our lives at Morphett Vale East and about life in our suburbs. The children at Pipalyatjara are going to make a photo story for us about life in their community. We will share them with you when they are finished. Mr Berry and the Room 1 students
