The following are five principles upon which boarding at LGS is based:

1. Being an open and trusting school, boarding is based on mutual respect for all members

2. Each boarder has the right to be able to work, play and relax free from abuse, intimidation, harassment, teasing and bullying

3. There is equality of opportunity and respect for all boarders, regardless

of ethnicity, culture, gender or disability

4. Each boarder has the right to extend his intellectual growth in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and in conditions that are conducive to work

5. Despite the often great distance separating boarders from their families,

links with parents are seen as an indispensable part of the support and development of boarders in this school

Boarding primarily exists to enable boys to attend Loughborough Grammar School who would, by reason of distance or domestic circumstance, otherwise be unable to do so, and whilst doing so take as full a part as possible in the varied life of the school.

Boarding is also offered as a facility to all families with boys at the school. Any boy may board on a casual or full-time basis for whatever reason by agreement with the Housemaster.

It is our hope and intention that each House provides a comfortable, safe and caring term time home, where each boy feels of value, and can through a range of social contact, academic support, and compassionate guidance, be helped to achieve all to which he aspires.

Welcome to School House

As your Housemaster and Housemistress, we try to do all of the worrying, reminding, encouraging and supporting that your parents would be doing if you were at home. The house is a home from home: a bustling, noisy, studious and cheerful place where, we hope, everyone finds his niche. You will have a room, or an area of a room, which is yours, and it is vital that we all respect each other’s space and privacy. We expect all members of the house to be courteous and considerate: the rules and guidance that we’ve included in this handbook are mostly common sense, and exist to ensure the safety, happiness and well-being of all of us.

House Staff

The Housemaster and Housemistress are Mr and Mrs Marlow who occupy School House with their daughters, Isabelle and Elizabeth. They are assisted by their resident tutor, Mr Korosi, and non-resident tutors, Mr Clarke, Mr Tomas and Miss Southern. Two Gap students, Allan Bouwer, from South Africa and Ruarri O’Shaunessy, from Australia also help with duties in the Boarding House. Throughout the week one of us will be on duty, looking after you.

Tutor Groups

Every morning, at 8.30 am, you must join your school tutor group and register with your school tutor, whose responsibility it is to monitor your day to day progress and to liaise closely with the Housemasters in all matters about you.

House Prefects

The School House Captain is a Year 13 pupil who has been selected by the House masters and tutors to take a leading role in the house. There is also a Vice-Captain.

Included in their responsibilities are:

1. Setting an impeccable example to other boys;

2. Commanding the respect of the other boys and requiring that the boys adhere to the House and School Rules;

3. Ensuring that the house is a happy and welcoming community, where all are respected and where kindness and tolerance prevail;

4. Liaising with the Housemaster in all matters concerning the house: representing the boys’ views and concerns, and supporting all staff;

5. Ensuring that boys are up promptly and dressed smartly in the morning, in bed promptly at night, and attending all meals;

6. Supporting the cleaning team in all matters of housekeeping;

7. Showing prospective boys and their families around the house and school;

8. Helping the Housemaster with the administrative organisation of the house.

School House rules

Your space and place in the house

Every boy is valued in the house for the unique qualities that he brings to our community. However, there are rules that all boys have to stick to:

1. You must never go off campus without permission.

2. You must keep your room or space tidy and hygienic at all times.

3. You must follow the procedures and rules of the house precisely, and then get on and have a great time!

Page 7: School House · 2019-07-23 · switched on or in use during the school day. • Boarders are allowed to use their phones before and after school. • Phones may not be used after

Leaving the Campus

Whenever you leave the campus you have to do two things:

1. Ask for (and receive) permission – say where you are going, who you are going with, and when you will be back;

2. Sign out when you leave and in again when you return, and tell a teacher that you are back in the house.

In addition:

• You may only go off campus in pairs.

• At the weekends: you must still ask permission and sign out, even when you go to a fixture, and sign in when you return.

All students must always sign out of the house whenever they leave and sign back in on their return.

Mobile Phones

• The School Rules stipulate that no pupil may have their phone switched on or in use during the school day.

• Boarders are allowed to use their phones before and after school.

• Phones may not be used after Lights Out. Phones belonging to younger boys will be locked away at night.

• Any phone used inappropriately will be confiscated.

Going out mid-week

You are encouraged to attend and support school events in the evenings, but we feel that, when you are boarding mid-week, you

should only go out to social events on very special occasions, such as 18th birthdays or Granny’s 80th.

Weekend arrangements

Full boarders Full boarders are expected to be in the house all weekend, unless they arrange to stay with friends or family. If they are going to stay somewhere else, we must have permission from their own parents / guardians as well as from their host’s parents / guardians.

• You must tell us your weekend arrangements on the

preceding Thursday, and any permissions required should be with us by the end of Thursday.

• Permission should be given by parents or guardians in the form of a phonecall, voicemail or email to Mr Marlow and it will be noted in the diary, with a contact phone number.

Weekly and Flexi Boarders Weekly boarders need to decide when they are leaving for the weekend and when they are returning for the next week. They can go home on a Friday night or they may wish to stay in to be here for matches or other commitments on Saturday. They can then return on Sunday evening (by 9.00pm roll call at the latest, or by 17.00 if they want supper) or on Monday morning in time for registration.

Flexi boarders will normally have fixed nights when they are in the house. If they want to change their nights they must liaise with the HM to ensure that there is a flexi bed available to them, and their parents or guardians must contact us with details of the change in plans.

Page 10: School House · 2019-07-23 · switched on or in use during the school day. • Boarders are allowed to use their phones before and after school. • Phones may not be used after

All students must always sign out of the house whenever they leave and sign back in on their return.

Permission for School Trips and Outings

Often parents or guardians are asked to sign consent forms for you to go on trips and outings. Mr or Mrs Marlow can of course do this on behalf of parents or guardians, but we require a phone call or email from parents and guardians instructing us specifically to do this on their behalf.

ICT Facilities

The house and each room is networked for your use in your prep and leisure time. At the end of school, you may also use the facilities in the ICT lab until 5.30

Laptops

You are welcome to use your own laptops in the house and will be able to use them to access the school’s internet connection. You may also find it useful to have your own printer.

Valuable Items and Money

• You are discouraged from bringing any item of value into school, and do so entirely at your own risk.

• All items must be named and you will have a lockable cupboard/drawer in which to store your personal and valuable items.

• You are advised to have a bank account for pocket money, to withdraw small amounts from the numerous banks in town.

• Any particular items of value that you have to bring into the house may be left with the Housemaster for safe keeping.

Keys

• External doors have a keypad style lock for during the day. • You will be given a key to your draw and it is your responsibility to

keep it locked. • You will have to pay for any replacement keys if lost.

2. All boys must work quietly at their desks.

3. Boys may work using the networked computers, or work in the Reading Room where there will be staff supervision.

Free Time

Work hard, play hard: Your free time in the evening is as important as your prep time. You might sometimes choose to work during this time, but you must ensure that you take time to relax too.

Sport: Many of the boys join in with informal team games in the Sports Hall or outside on the School Field. It is also a time when you might pursue specialist sports training. Games: You can relax and play table football or table tennis in the house, play video games, use the computers, or watch TV. The evening staff are on hand for an informal chat or to help and advise with more particular concerns.

Weekend activities

There will be an assortment of weekend activities and trips arranged. Most will be optional, but there will be at least 1 compulsory house trip each term.

Bed Times

• Bed times are strictly enforced during the week; we all need our sleep. • You must be in your rooms 10 minutes before Lights Out, and in your

beds, with the lights out, at Lights Out time. • You should be silent after Lights Out.

Health Centre

• If you feel unwell or unfit, and need medical advice or attention of any kind, you should visit Mrs Krarup and Mrs Coward in the Health Centre, who will keep house staff informed.

• The sooner you receive treatment, the better, so you must avoid waiting until late in the evening before you tell someone that you are injured or unwell!

• If you are unwell you may not stay in your room during the school day; instead, you are given a bed in the Health Centre and cared for by the nurses there. At the end of the school day you will then return to the house. If you are unwell for a prolonged period then it is advised that you return home or to your guardians to be cared for.

Health Centre Opening Times:

Problems

We all experience problems from time to time and over the years we have experienced most of what life can throw at us! Feel free to discuss or share your problems with any of the house staff at any time…. Experience also tells us that after the initial euphoria and excitement of being in a new environment you will feel a little down before rising phoenix like. If you are feeling low let someone know if you can….

We genuinely hope that you enjoy your time in School House
