providing quality educational opportunities for

all our students. Thank you to John Clayton,

Robyn Bishop and Melinda Elith for their

excellent work standing in as Principal while I

was at these meetings.

Theresea Hughes, our School Librarian has been

able to purchase three lovely books signed by

both the author and illustrator. The books

‘Kensington Kitten How Greedy’, ‘Kensington

Kitten What Nonsence’ and ‘Kensington Kitten

Rockstar’ are a wonderful addition to our

library. Later this year the School will be

celebrating Book Week. This week recognises

the importance of books and reading for our

students. As part of our celebration of Book

Week, the author of our new books, Pat Duff,

will visit Oaklands Central School and spend

time with our students, talking to them about

her books and writing. We are very excited by

this opportunity for our students to be inspired

by Pat. Thank you to Theresea for her efforts

in organising such a great opportunity for our

students.

Unfortunately we have had to postpone the

Transition Camp that was planned for later this

week. We were all looking forward to a great

time away with our Year 7 & 8 students.

However, as many people would be aware, a blue

green algae bloom has resulted in a Red Alert

being issued, meaning that all recreational water

activities should be avoided. As our first

priority is the wellbeing of our students, we

reluctantly had to postpone this event. We will

notify parents of a new date for the camp in the

near future.

Thank you for the huge effort that has been

made with school uniforms. The school looks

great with the majority of students wearing

their school uniform with pride. If, for some

PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Dear Parent’s and Caregivers,

Firstly let me congratulate all our students who

received awards at this morning’s Whole School

Assembly. It is wonderful to see so many

students being recognised for their effort.

Each award recognises the effort students are

making in their classes, working hard to learn

and grow. Research clearly shows us that effort

and perseverance are the essential ingredients

that lead to learning. With enough effort and

determination, students are able to learn the

most complex skills and gain deep knowledge.

The school motto, “let your light shine”,

reinforces that idea. Every student in our

School is expected to apply themselves to their

learning and work hard to shine. And we can be

proud that this year every student is showing

the effort and persistence in each class to

succeed in their learning.

During the last week, I have been very busy at

meetings, being updated on current issues

affecting education in NSW. These meetings

included presentations by people such as the

Minister for Education, Hon Adrian Piccoli,

Executive Director Performance and

Leadership, Dail McGilchrist, Executive

Director, Asset Management Anthony Perrau

and Executive Director, Learning & Wellbeing

Brian Smyth-King. The central message from

these meetings is that every school is part of a

strategic plan to improve student learning.

Students and learning are at the very centre of

every aspect of our work in schools. At

Oaklands Central School we are committed to

Page 3: School Events Congratulations to our students for their ...€¦ · Oaklands Central School & Oaklands Community Newsletter Events Calender School Events Friday 4th March Secondary

good reason, school uniform cannot be worn,

please send in a note giving the reason for your

student being out of uniform. Please note that

students should only wear the sports shirt on

the designated sport day. The new OCS

Uniform Policy is now available on the school

webpage as a guide for parents. I really

appreciate the big improvement in student dress

across the school.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the upgrades to

the front office area. We are currently creating

a display of school memorabilia as a way of

celebrating the part the school has playing in

our community over more than 130 years. The

school is central part of our community and we

are very proud of our students, staff and our

contribution to our community. To help in this

celebration of your school, if you have old

photographs, reports or other items from the

school, and would be willing to loan them to the

school so that they can be put on secure display

in the foyer, please contact the school. We

would love to hear from you.

Peter Craft

Principal

Welcome to the second half of term 1! The

students in junior secondary have been working

well on developing narrative writing skills. I’d

encourage parents and carers to look at the

development of editing skills, paragraphing and

presentation of dialogue in their student’s work.

I’d like to congratulate students whose effort

has been recognised with merit awards at the

first Whole School Assembly. Several other

students were close to receiving awards and I’d

encourage all students to continue to strive for

their own personal best effort in all classes, as

I’ve seen improvement in all students work sam-

ples.

We have been well represented by students at

the Zone Swimming Carnival at The Rock, with

Jacob Glanvill, Crystal Bateman and Bryce Kenny

progressing to Regional representation honours.

A big congratulations to these students.

Susan Kane from the Hume Shire Council Youth

Services has attended the School and we have

seen many students join the working party for

the bubble soccer for Youth Week and the

“Blow up cinema” project. These will provide

entertainment later in the year. It’s great to

see how creative and positive students have

been in assisting with this initiative.

Riverina Access Partnership (RAP) Induction

Camp was a great learning experience for our

Year 11 students. Students were guided through

the Board of Studies HSC monitoring processes

and expectations. Students were able to work in

classes with their HSC cohort from across the

seven RAP schools. The Oaklands students were

able to interact socially with their peers as well

as develop a partnership with their core

teacher. One of the advantages of the RAP

program is the access students have to expert

teachers many of whom are Board of Studies

Senior Markers in the subject they teach.

Breakfast Club has started and the secondary

students have taken the lead in assisting

Tereasa with the setting up and cooking of

toast each Friday morning. Secondary students

are also assisting with the lunch program the

SRC are providing.

I’d like to thank the parents and carers that

attended the ‘Meet and Greet’ afternoon. I am

sure it was worthwhile developing the

partnership with teachers in the education of

your students.

Senior secondary students attended the Rotary

Youth Driver Awareness initiative in Leeton last

week. Students worked with police and driving

instructors to develop an awareness of their

role as a driver and passenger in road safety.

School Counsellor contact for students is

available twice a term. Please talk to your child

in secondary if you think this service would be

beneficial. Feel welcome to contact me if you

are concerned for your students’ wellbeing.

Primary Assemblies

The first Primary assembly will be run by Year 2

and will be on Friday 11th March at 2pm. Because

of Good Friday, our second primary assembly for

the term will be held on Friday 1st April. Feel

free to join us for some singing, dancing (yes you

will be encouraged to join in) and in celebrating

our students’ successes.

Parent Meet and Greet

Thank you to those of you who took some time

out of your very busy schedules to attend our

Meet and Greet evening and to those of you who

couldn’t make it on the night but caught up with

us either before or after the event. It was a

lovely relaxed atmosphere. We hope you enjoyed

the night off cooking and catching up with staff

in a less structured format. If you were not able

to attend and still need to have a chat with your

child’s classroom teacher, please feel free to

contact the office to make an appointment.

Kinder – Year 1 – Year 2

We are still collecting egg cartons for a special

creative arts project we will be working on later

in the term. We have a particular interest in the

‘pretty coloured’ egg cartons, if you have some

spares can you please send them in.

Our Third Class

We have advertised our third classroom teacher

position. The process takes more than a few

weeks so please bear with us as we go through

the motions. In the meantime we have been

fortunate enough to secure Mr Gavin Knight who

has worked with us in the past. He will begin

with the Year 5 and 6 students when we split

into three classes on Monday 14th March.
