Catholic Education Makes the Difference! NEWS RELEASE O’Gorman High School Presents “Bye Bye Birdie” April 26, 2017
O’Gorman High School’s very talented Drama Department has chose the musical comedy “Bye Bye Birdie” for this year’s performance. Bye Bye Birdie will be hitting the stage at the Sylvia Gravel Theatre (located at O’Gorman High School) on May 3, 4, 5 & 6, 2017. The performance starts at 7:00 pm and tickets can be purchased for $20.00 each at Alfie’s Cigar Store, the Timmins Square Customer Service Booth and at O’Gorman High School (Front office). Tickets go on sale on April 12th . Lauri-Ann Loreto Neal, OHS Department Head of Arts and Humanities commented “On May 3rd through 6th, at 7:00 pm, O'Gorman High School presents a fun-filled blast to the past. Bye Bye Birdie is one of the Tony Award winning, Broadway musical classics; no smoke, no mirrors, no talking objects or animals, just good, clean, 1950's comedy. The story was inspired by Elvis Presley's 1957 draft notice into the Army. The characters are quirky and stereotypical, yet lovable. In true OHS musical theatre style, the stage at the Sylvia Gravel theatre will be filled with wonderfully colourful sets and costumes. The show comes to life through rock and roll riffs as well as beautiful ballads. Familiar titles include "Put on A Happy Face" and "Everything is Rosie", as performed by Dick Van Dyke in the original 1963 movie version. The music, dance, and light-hearted storyline are sure to entertain teenagers and adults alike!! Don't miss this show!” Tickets are $20, available at O'Gorman High School, Alfie's Cigar Store, and the Timmins Square Customer Service booth. Get your tickets early as dates will surely sell out quickly. Catholic Education Makes the Difference! Catholic Education Week 2017 begins on Sunday, April 30. The Catholic schools in
our parish will engage in a series of events to celebrate the ongoing gift of publicly-
funded Catholic education. You are invited to discover what celebrations are
happening in your children’s school and if possible, attend. Publicly-funded
Catholic education has existed in Ontario since 1841 and its graduates have served
Ontario and Canada very well. The current generation of students in our publicly-
funded Catholic schools will serve with the same spirit and generosity as their
previous generations.
This year’s Catholic Education Week theme is, “Walking Forward Together.” The 2017 CEW theme and its five sub-themes are drawn from three contemporary Catholic documents that address the need for reconciliation and renewal – in our lives, with our families, in our relationships with others and in our relationship with our environment and our common global future. The five sub-themes, one for each day of Catholic Education Week, are aimed at helping staff and students to reflect more fully on what Walking Forward Together asks of them. The five sub-themes are: Day 1: Walking Forward Together with God Day 2: Walking Forward Together with Our Families Day 3: Walking Forward Together with Others Day 4: Walking Forward Together with Creation Day 5: Walking Forward Together in Hope Our CEW biblical quote, “Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8), acknowledges the important role of justice and solidarity with our Indigenous peoples, our environment, the poor and marginalized, and all those who work to protect our common global future. Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities. A list of these activities can be found at www.ncdsb.on.ca. We invite you to visit our school(s) during this special week and to participate in any of our activities as we celebrate Catholic Education Week 2017.

On October 5, 1994, the first World Teachers' Day was held. This event has been organized on the same date each year since and is intended to be special day for the appreciation of teachers.
The Northeastern Catholic District School Board, along with our Parish partners, would like to acknowledge all of our teachers and the great work they do daily. Catholic education is alive and thriving at our neighbourhood Catholic Schools. We ask you join with us in saying a special prayer for all of our Teachers. “May God bless our teachers for shaping the minds, bodies and souls of our learners.”
Thank you to all of the Teachers in our lives that made a difference and went that extra mile.

Catholic Education Makes the Difference!
NEWS RELEASE NCDSB Trustees Make Decision on School Closure Thursday, May 26, 2016:
The Northeastern Catholic District School Board of Trustees voted to accept the recommended options presented to them by the Accommodation Review Committee (ARC), looking into the possible closure, amalgamation and review of all English Catholic schools/facilities located in Timmins. The schools under review are St. Paul Catholic School, Sacred Heart School, O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School, O’Gorman High School, ACCESS Centre located at 383 Birch Street North and 101 Spruce Street North (Catholic Education Centre).
The Pupil Accommodation Review process that has led to the Board accepting the ARC recommendation began in January and consisted of four public meetings, with many working committee meetings taking place during this 5 month process. A formal motion was presented at the Board of Trustee meeting, held Wednesday, May 25, that read:
Be it resolved that effective September, 2017, the Northeastern Catholic District School Board approve the closure of Sacred Heart School and the creation of a Dual Track FDK to Grade 4 or Grade 5 school at the St. Paul School site and a Dual Track Grade 5 or Grade 6 to Grade 8 school at the O’Gorman Intermediate Catholic School site depending on enrolment trends.
Richard Brassard, Board Chair, commented “We extend our appreciation to the Accommodation Review Committee for their dedicated work in this endeavour and we thank them for their patience, involvement and input throughout the entire process. In the view of the Board, we sincerely believe in the positive impact on student learning that will result from this decision. Consequently, we will submit a request for funding to the Ministry of Education in order to transform our current facilities for Catholic elementary students here in the City of Timmins. We are confident that a dual-track education program of instruction for our students will be delivered in an exemplary fashion by our teaching staff with the support of our non-teaching employees. The Board will, within a few weeks, develop a business plan that will then be submitted to the Ministry of Education for financial consideration. We feel that our students and their families deserve state of the art facilities for teaching and learning and we will work hard towards that goal.” In accordance with NCDSB Administrative Procedure APF003 Pupil Accommodation Reviews, a separate committee will now be created to orchestrate the transition for students and staff in consultation with parents/guardians and staff to minimize any disruption to our students.

OPENING DOORS OF MERCY
Catholic Education Week 2016 begins on Sunday, May 1.
Pope Francis has declared 2016 a “Holy Year of Mercy” as a way for the Catholic church to “make more evident, its mission to be a witness of mercy”. The Holy Year began on December 8, 2015 and will be celebrated until November 20, 2016. Throughout the year, there will be a series of jubilee celebrations on the theme of mercy for teenagers, deacons, the sick and disabled, prisoners, catechists and clergy. As well, Pope Francis opened the Vatican’s Holy Door on December 8th. The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness which is the main focus of a Holy Year. The theme God’s mercy is illustrated in fifteen of the sixteen bronze panels that make up the Vatican Door. There are seven such Holy Doors in the world, including one in Quebec City. Catholic Education Week 2016 combines both the theme of mercy and the act of opening doors of reconciliation, mercy and forgiveness to all around us. We invite you to visit our school(s) during this special week and to participate in any of our activities as we celebrate Catholic Education Week 2016. Please visit our website at www.ncdsb.on.ca to learn more about what is taking place at our schools during Catholic Education Week.
