Does your son love music or love to sing? If he does, then the Boys’ Choir based at the Metropolitan Cathedral is a fantastic opportunity for him to extend his musical knowledge and grow within a supportive fun environment. Year 8 Young Servant Leaders Day

Reflections from some of our year 8 students.

Acacia: on Monday we spent the day in the hall with Mr Grant and all the year 8 students. We talked about how to be a young leader and what we needed to achieve to be a young, successful leader! We went in groups of 6-7 and got given a task and had 10 minutes to practice and come up with a prayer then we shared it with all the other yr 8 students!

Azrah: on Monday the yr 8s had our leadership day and we were with Mr Grant, I learnt that being a leader is not just filling in roles, it's about being kind and being a role model for the younger kids. In my group we wrote 4 prayers and read them to the other yr 8s. We really enjoyed it.

Brooke: We spent the day with Mr Grant to learn about leadership and what it means to be a leader. I learnt that being a leader is not about position, it is about action. Some of the activities that we did were filling out a list of A-Z attributes of a leader and we also did an activity with a partner and one of the partners closed their eyes and were instructed to trace a shape. We got into groups of about 6 and were given a task, in my group we were given a bible passage, we only had 10 minutes to practise and then read it out to the rest of the year 8s. At the end we said a choral prayer and went back to class. During that time I learnt that we all can be a leader whether your small or big, loud or quiet, it’s all about your actions. I also learnt that a leader is not someone who bosses others around its someone who helps others to be the best they can be and lead by example. A huge thank you to Mr Grant for coming and teaching us about leadership and thank you to Mrs Brown and Mrs Bennett for giving us this opportunity.

Shakaia: We talked about leadership and what it means to be a leader in the senior hub. We learned about how we are servant leaders of God and how Jesus was a leader but still washed Peters feet like a servant. During the day we got into groups, in the group we did some prayers while others did a play and a dance. We did a project where we outlined a shape with our eyes closed while someone told us where to go, then for our second project they would push our hand around. The differences are how a boss tells you what to do while a leader helps and encourages you to do it. We learnt about effective leaders and what makes them effective. (whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, just as the son of man came not to be served but to serve.) We deeply thank Catholic Schools Education Services (Allan) so very much for teaching us about leadership and what makes us a leader.

11th February 2019

Our Lady of the Rosary School - Friends of Our School - Chairpersons Report Hi Everyone and Welcome to the Friends of Our School Annual General Meeting for 2019. The 2018 school year was once again extremely busy for the small dedicated team of individuals that make up the FOS Committee. Firstly, I would like to thank them all for their time and efforts to raise funds and further improve our kid’s school environment. Our focus for 2018 was to finish raising funds for the school playground and new drinking fountains. Our fundraising activities for the past year included:

Easter Raffle $691.00 Ice Blocks $1,022.00 Hot Cross Buns $164.00 Movie Night $2,193.00 Karma Keg $1,652.00 Mufti Day $500.00 Sausage Sizzle $659.00 Entertainment Book $351.00 Disco $1,156.00 Pizza $936.00 Calendar / Artwork $1,448.00 Other $768.00

Total Funds Raised = $11,540.00 The FOS Committee has donated $8,500 to the school, to assist with the additional drinking fountains and

the costs associated with the Bike Container. The remaining funds will be held in the account to assist with upfront costs for fundraising activities during 2019. On top of the general fund raising activities the FOS committee also ap-plied for a number of grants to assist with the playground and landscaping costs. The following grants were success-ful during the year 2018.

First Sovereign $10,000.00 Pelorus Trust $19,183.00 FourWinds $4,000.00

Total $34,183.00 This year the FOS committee donated the Grant money received during 2017 and 2018 to the school so the school could make the payment for the new school playground and landscaping. The FOS Committee will continue to raise funds during 2019 through possible grant applications and future fund raising activities that will be decided through-out the year. The FOS has been asked to focus on fundraising towards the cost of the bike container fit out and mu-ral and also additional painting of the quad area for games. This was agreed at our FOS meeting on 11th January 2019. The first initiatives are Ice Blocks (we will need parent help to make this happen on Friday’s) and also planned Easter Raffle (please bring your Easter raffle donations to the office).

OLRS Gala

One other initiative that has been tabled is a School Gala for 2019. We will be looking for interested parents to attend a Gala kick off meeting and form a Gala Committee in the coming weeks. As always the FOS committee would be nothing if it wasn’t for the passion and dedication shown by the small group of people that meet regularly, so special thanks to all members from 2018. Special thanks to Jan Simmons as Secre-tary (leaving the school) and Yen Jong as Treasurer. Ngà mihi nui

Barry Arthur Chairperson OLRS Friends of Our School Committee
