GOOD SPIRIT SCHOOL DIVISION DAVISON SCHOOL MARCH NEWS DREAM BIG On March 6, in the evening, grade 3 co- hosted a movie with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan titled “Dream Big STEAM Night”. Stan Reed, an engineer with Mosaic, was on hand to introduce the film, speak about engineering as a career, and answer questions from both students and parents. On display were a number of structures that were engineered by the grade 3 and grade 5 students who were happy to answer questions and demonstrate their structures. Students learned about the vast number of roles engineers and geoscientists play in today’s world. We are sure the movie, and meeting an engineer, has inspired our students to think about a future career in this field. Thank you to Mr. Reed for sharing his passion for engineering with our students and everyone in attendance. March certainly came in like a “Lion” with a frigid temperature of -30 on March 1 st , but then soon dissipated into much more ‘spring’ like temperatures. Although it is wonderful to see the milder temperatures, all that snow has translated into ‘puddles’ on the playground that the students just can’t resist (even as adults we remember how much fun that was)! Please make sure that your son/daughter has rubber boots, extra socks and perhaps splash pants in case of ‘accidental’ accidents! Engineering Our World

DREAM BIG

On March 6, in the evening, grade 3 co-hosted a movie with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan titled “Dream Big STEAM Night”.

March certainly came in like a “Lion” with a frigid temperature of -30 on March 1st, but then soon dissipated into much more ‘spring’ like temperatures.

H DAY YEAR

Thanks to members of the Melville Curling

Club, the grade 5 & 6 students took to the ice

once more on March 13th. With a bit more

experience, our students are beginning to see

the strategy of this game and practice their

skills. Giving them this opportunity will

hopefully spark an interest in the sport and

they will continue to develop their curling

skills.

Many Thanks Thank you to our Davison families and

community members for always thinking of

us, whether it be clothing donations,

monetary donations or donations of food

items for our breakfast club.

Thank you to Ms. Cloutier who has been

baking up a storm and donating delicious

muffins to the Breakfast Club – much

appreciated!

Also thank you to Rail City Industries for

donating white milk to our Breakfast Club.

The milk will came in handy on the days we

serve cereal and oatmeal.

VISITING ARTISTS

On March 27 local artists Jeannette Cloutier, Dean Prinz and Yvonne Crow ‘artfully’ inspired our grade 2 students with some unique perspectives on the forms that art can take. The students had the opportunity to visit with the artists and ask questions about the materials they used ranging from recycled materials, toilet paper, and more traditional watercolor paintings. Thank you to our local artists for taking the time to visit and bringing their creations.

Recognize It! Reject It! International Day for the Elimination of Racial

Discrimination was recognized on March 21. Mr.

Coomber’s Social Studies classes have been

discussing racism and the consequences of it. On

March 21, the grade five and six students marched

around Melville to highlight and take a stand

against discrimination of any kind. By discussing

and being aware of the many faces of racism, he

hopes to enlighten our students and teach them we

are all people, no matter skin colour or ethnicity

and that we must treat each other with respect.

Grades 4-6 students gathered in the gym on March 14 for the annual “Jump Rope for Heart” kickoff. The students were given a sneak peek at the prizes they could earn and permission forms were sent home. The annual ‘jump’ will be held on April 18th. (Watch for the grand total raised for the Heart & Stroke Foundation in next month’s newsletter). Thank you to Miss Lang for making sure everything is in place for another successful event.

CLOTHING DRIVE

Davison School is once again partnering with

Community Living for a Clothing Drive Fundraiser.

While you are doing your ‘spring cleaning’ please

consider donating your gently used clothing, shoes,

boots, jackets, linens and other wearables at the

school office from Monday, April 1 until Thursday,

April 11 during school hours. You are also welcome

to bring your donations during the evenings of

student conferences (April 3 & 4). It is important that

all items be cleaned and bagged in sellable condition.

Items will be given to Community Living for resale

and proceeds from the drive will be divided between

Davison School and Community Living. The money

received at Davison will support the purchase of

recess equipment.

With the arrival of spring, bicycles are

once again the main transportation for a

number of our students. Thank you to

Constable J. Houle who visited each

classroom on March 19 to stress the

importance of bicycle safety to our

students. He also spoke to the students

about respecting people’s property and

not riding their bikes on lawns,

driveways etc.

READERS

Book Sale—Just a reminder that

Mrs. Ball will once again host a ‘used

book sale’ to help get books into the

hands of all the children at Davison.

She is asking for donations of gently

read (and loved) picture books and

children’s novels. If your family has

children’s books that are looking for a

new home, consider donating them to

the school. Mrs. Ball will collect

donations until the end of May.

Books will then be sorted, organized

and sold for a small fee (25 or 50

cents).

“Reading is important because if

you can read you can learn

anything about everything and

everything about anything.”
